To not be that into hot chocolate

5thnonblonde · 01/12/2021 23:38

It makes my stomach feel weird even if it’s with oat milk. Loads of threads suggest it for Christmas Eve and someone yesterday was even asking for tips for their H.C ‘station’?!

YABU: It’s winter in a cup
YANBU: Way too rich- yuk

I don't like tea or coffee so hot chocolate is what I have when I need a warm drink. I normally just have instant with a dash of milk.

Cream, marshmallows or actually melting chocolate in milk is just for special occasions.

I can also see why a hot chocolate station would be fun over Christmas. It's like a non alcoholic bar cart. Instead of lemons and lime you have marshmallows and sprinkles.

But no one is being unreasonable for not liking hot chocolate

BurbageBrook · 02/12/2021 07:53

Same, 9 times out of 10 I would rather a chocolate bar. Exception is those tiny cups of rich, thick Italian or Spanish hot chocolate you get in Italy and Spain. Those are unbelievable.

TuftyMarmoset · 02/12/2021 07:56

I like it but only every once in a while. Certainly not frequently enough to justify setting up a dedicated station. My teeth would drop out!
The best thing for a proper chocolatey fix is getting some high cocoa percentage chocolate (I’ve got green & blacks 80%) and then letting a square melt in your mouth. Sooo good!

GerbilCurse · 02/12/2021 07:56

I want to like hot chocolate, drinking it in an evening when it's cold outside really appeals but I really don't like the stuff. I try it again from time to time to see if I've changed my mind but it hasn't happened yet. I like chocolate and I like hot milk but the two together just doesn't work for me

MLMshouldbeillegal · 02/12/2021 07:58

I am a massive chocolate fan.

But hot chocolate is just disgusting. I haven't enjoyed milky drinks since I was a toddler. Hot chocolate stations = ridiculous kitchen clutter which people think looks good for Insta.

Minceandonions · 02/12/2021 07:58

I don't watch my weight as such, but would prefer to not have my treats in drink form, so I also barely ever drink hot chocolate.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 02/12/2021 07:58

It's usually too rich. I do enjoy it when I'm cold after an outdoor walk. I wouldn't like it so much on Christmas Eve if I'd just been in the house.

LittleMissTake · 02/12/2021 08:06

I love the idea of hot chocolate and the smell but that’s where it ends. The drink is waaay too sweet and milky for me (as a black coffee drinker).

Give me a liqueur coffee instead any day.

muddyford · 02/12/2021 08:17

Lovely after a cold winter dog walk, otherwise it's too sweet and sickly. Definitely not for Christmas Eve.

IdontPracticeSanteria · 02/12/2021 08:18

Too sickly and sweet for me.
I have one once in a blue moon that's it.

Pedalpushers · 02/12/2021 08:23

I think it's absolutely revolting!

PurpleHydrangea1 · 02/12/2021 08:23

I do love a hot chocolate, but only a small cup with proper milk and cocoa. No marshmallows or cream, etc.
Probably have one about once or twice a week during winter.

Happy1982ish · 02/12/2021 08:28

Wouldn’t dream of drinking it. Way too sugary.

orangejuicer · 02/12/2021 08:30

@Mittenmob

I love hot chocolate but if you get to the point where you have a 'station' then you've failed in life.
Oh no no. Quite the opposite Grin
FrancescaContini · 02/12/2021 08:30

Agree, it’s disgusting

TrishM80 · 02/12/2021 08:32

Agree, never liked it, or any sort of drinkable chocolate (chocolate flavoured milk, coco pops etc.). I like chocolate though.

Goatinthegarden · 02/12/2021 08:35

I sometimes think I fancy a hot chocolate, but they’re never as good as I think they’ll be. They are always better with a glut of Cointreau though.

We used to have several cafes in my home city in the early 2000s (not sure if it was actually a chain?) called something like, ‘Chocolate Soup’. They served massive cups of liquid chocolate in various flavours. When I was a teen, my friends used to love it there; I was always keen to go, but every time I had one, just ended up feeling a bit sick.

icedcoffees · 02/12/2021 08:40

I like proper Italian hot chocolate, but I've never found a decent instant or powdered one that does the same job.

I had one in Italy once that was so thick in the cup the spoon stood upright - you couldn't really drink it, you had to spoon it in Grin

It was fantastic but nothing I've had since had even come close Sad

ApplesinmyPocket · 02/12/2021 08:52

HC is sort of worshipped on MN - prescribed for every ill - "She came home from school upset - I've snuggled her up on the sofa with Hot Chocolate" - "My DC love their swimming lessons - they are allowed HOT CHOCOLATE afterwards!"

It does make me Hmm a bit but it's probably envy as my DC wouldn't have touched the stuff (they didn't like any hot drinks - one of them, in adulthood, still doesn't) so that shortcut panacea was never an option for me.

If I had a fancy for some HC, I wouldn't use the powdered stuff, I'd whisk some cubes of chocolate into hot milk - this recipe Irresistible Swiss Hot Chocolate with real chocolate and cream - sounds absolutely gorgeous!

DukkaDukka · 02/12/2021 08:54

My DC like a hot chocolate when they’ve been out in the snow and are cold.

Hot chocolate stations are for people who want insta likes or follow Mrs Hinch and the like.

Hot Chocolate and mugs manage to live in a kitchen cupboard, I don’t feel the need to clutter up my worktop with a tray and endless marshmallows (which the kids would just demolish).

Foreverlexicon · 02/12/2021 08:55

I’m not all that keen. I will drink it but very rarely choose it. I’m a chocolate hound but hot chocolates are never so good.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2021 09:04

There’s a lot of hot chocolate gift sets out there I noticed.
I live in fear of receiving one. 😂

Dahlietta · 02/12/2021 09:05

I have never liked hot chocolate, but if a full-on hot chocolate station at Christmas makes somebody happy, I find it hard to get upset about it.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2021 09:08

I do t think anyone is ‘upset’. Just musing that there’s been a sudden explosion in what is a normal every day drink all year round and all the fussing around with it.

Roominmyhouse · 02/12/2021 09:09

@Naughtynovembertree

We are fans of chai latte here and milk with cinnamon and honey.
I’d so much rather have a chai latte. Delicious!

I have to be in the mood for hot chocolate. But that being said there used to be a coffee shop near my work who basically put a chocolate coin into a cup of hot milk. It was sickly but amazing!
