AIBU to think there is often really terrible advice on here?

I mean, people suggest completely random shit and then get quite indignant if an OP says they won’t be taking it.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I regularly see weird suggestions on here, or suggestions that are clearly unworkable (like ‘home school your kids’) and I sometimes don’t know if they are serious or not.

What’s the worst bit of MN advice you’ve seen?

OP posts:

@hotmeatymilk

Couple of people on another thread right now are talking about using "magick" to deal with all the enemies they keep acquiring. Oh, I secretly love the posters who think they’re witches. They’re so sincere.
Obviously it's all total bollocks. No way they can put a hex on anyone who takes the piss out of --

AAAAAAAARGH!!!!!

ShipshapeShore · 30/11/2021 19:04

I like the advice that's proceeded by "just".
Such as just move, just get a job, just work evenings if your partner works during the day, just change schools, just get a babysitter... It's all so easy sometimes!

Or when OP states very clearly something isn't an option and the first reply is "Could you [insert thing OP has ruled out].

Theunamedcat · 30/11/2021 19:05

Did you step on lego @DrSbaitso?

Its my sons favourite curse

SpritzingAperol · 30/11/2021 19:05

My fave was at the beginning of the 1st round of Covid( hmmm, remember those heady days ) It was just before lock down and people were talking about getting stuff in ( I'm not talking dystopian tin hat prepping but more "what do you think will be useful? ")

"God, why would I get anything? You can just get a super market delivery ...."

Also fave Covid advice

"just take a flask and a flannel, of course you don't need hand gel"

Agree the tone of the thread is generally set early on in the first few responses.

Roselilly36 · 30/11/2021 19:06

Yes batshit crazy at times! Mysterious hobbies, that every man & his dog can guess, LTB, subjects that you must have a very thick skin to post, ie hot tubs, rehoming a pet, owning a second home etc.

TomelettewithGreggs · 30/11/2021 19:09

Maybe not the worst advice but there are also a flood of posters eager to assume lazy husbands have ADHD or are on the spectrum.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/11/2021 19:10

What is magick as opposed to magic? Not that I believe in magic!

TomelettewithGreggs · 30/11/2021 19:10

Always. Not also.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/11/2021 19:12

I do think the number of posters who happily declare what they would do if they had an abusive/ difficult/ lazy husband have probably not been in that situation themselves. It’s very easy to type. Even if the advice is good, it’s not always that straight forward to do.

I also think many are deluded in thinking they have avoided those situations and found nice partners through anything other than luck.

JSL52 · 30/11/2021 19:13

'Just move house ' often to people struggling with money.
It costs thousands in EA fees , solicitors etc etc.

Chasingaftermidnight · 30/11/2021 19:13

‘Just move’. Yes because it’s THAT simple.

My least favourite that seems to be all over MN at the moment is the competitive laid back responses with their kneejerk ‘I couldn’t get worked up over this.’ When you know they most definitely would.

OP: ‘my husband never helps around the house or with the children and last night I didn’t want to have sex with him so he called me a whore and watched porn in bed next to me while having a wank’.
Poster: ‘God, I couldn’t get worked up over this. So he had a wank, so what? Why don’t you have a wank?’

Just piss poor spelling in an effort to be cool

There isn't a difference some people just believe it makes them look like they know what they are talking about and that it's more mystical.

I say that as a pagan, that's studied ( I am guessing) paganism and magic for years. Though more from a history point of view. I find the human obsession with religion and magic, fascinating.

One thing I do know is that of people believe they can hex people or that people regularly hex them, they usually have various other issues as well.

😂

YY! I'm so with you on the 'I couldn't get worked up about this'.

A. Unlikely to be true

B. The OP posted so it's clearly an issue for them, irrelevant if posters 'couldn't get worked up'.

LondonWolf · 30/11/2021 19:24

The most ridiculous advice I ever saw given on here was to an OP who didn’t want to go to Disney with her in laws who wanted to pay for the whole family to go. It just wasn’t for her and she was dreading it. She was seriously advised to sit the in laws down and request they donate what they would have spent on the family Disney holiday, to a charity that sends underprivileged children on holiday…

I still laugh to this day imagining my own ex in laws faces had I made such a suggestion HmmHmm

DrSbaitso · 30/11/2021 19:27

Luck is certainly a factor. But you can improve your odds by not wasting your time with a twat, so you're free and available if you are lucky enough to meet the right person.

Cheerychirpy · 30/11/2021 19:28

It’s the ‘go no contact’ that gets me, like this isn’t the most ludicrously immature way to deal with a relationship!

slashlover · 30/11/2021 19:31

90% of the sentences which start with "If it was me then I would..." are absolute nonsense. "If it was me then I would let the tyres down. No, you clearly wouldn't.

"My husband has a female friend he's known since they were 1."
"He's obviously shagging her/wants to shag her! LTB!"

Nidan2Sandan · 30/11/2021 19:37

"Move somewhere cheaper" like that doesnt cost thousands!!

godmum56 · 30/11/2021 19:40

@junglejane66

If your car doesnt have an MoT then your insurance will be invalid

On the other hand I've never seen the advice of 'dont eat yellow snow' which after bitter experience I agree with

Grin

you didn't?????? seriously????? urgh

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 30/11/2021 19:41

The worst ones I’ve seen are, ‘just move somewhere cheaper’ failing to consider so many variables and the fact that moving is very expensive anyway.

‘Go back to work’ in relation to a SAHM whose husband does nothing around the house and has a very full on job, and the children are very young and the mum’s work wouldn’t even pay the childcare- all that happens in that case is the woman ends up doing even MORE work, a paid job AND all the admin/out of hours childcare etc.

I’m not saying it’s right, but it happens.

This. It's like 'just change jobs' if you're unhappy at work! It's really not that easy!
myusernamewastakenbyme · 30/11/2021 19:48

I came onto say about leaving the husband if he is lazy etc....my children were in their teens when i became a lone parent....its been bloody hard...they are grown up now but it is still hard without a husband.. car problems.. house problems. .i have to pay through the nose to get anything fixed.

ShirleyPhallus · 30/11/2021 19:51

@minou123

There have been 2 best "worst" advice I remember.
  1. Op inherited house, but it had sitting tenants and wanted advice on how to ask them to leave, because she wanted to sell.
Poster told the Op to give the house to the tenants for free. The Op clearly had too much money and should stop being selfish.
  1. I think the Op was about someone being incredibly hurtful and mean to them.
A poster suggested the Op should give the horrible person a creme egg. The horrible person was having a bad day and this would cheer rhem up.
I forgot about the creme egg one! So good!

Things to put on burns often has far too much in common with things to put in a curry.
