I have been watching the Beatles documentary and got to thinking about her.

She was in the papers constantly in the 2000s, I remember her being painted as an absolute con artist witch. I googled a few articles about her from the time of the divorce. They are brutal in the misogynistic tone, she’s labelled as a slag, a goer, ex prostitute, you name it.

I don’t think papers write about women in such hash terms anymore. Maybe she was a bit of a twat, whoever married Saint Paul would have suffered at that time I think.

I suppose by AIBU is are the press less misogynistic.

Well I for one have enjoyed the derail and would appreciate a separate thread about John and Yoko, it all fascinates me.

Re the poster who complained there was blackface in that (hilarious) Star Stories link; I'm pretty sure it's a black actor to begin with. Kobna Holbrook-Smith was one of the cast.

EYProvider · 01/12/2021 12:08

Thanks, @cosmopolitanplease. I think it’s interesting too, and I don’t see why it’s a topic better placed on Reddit. What does that even mean? That it’s too stupid for MN? Too boring? Compared with what - stories about ‘toxic’ mother in laws?

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 01/12/2021 12:09

Anyone as famous as John Lennon was, is going to be a target for assassins - I don't think there is any mystery about it.

EYProvider · 01/12/2021 12:14

Well then you haven’t read what I wrote, @ArblemarchTFruitbat.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 01/12/2021 12:17

I have read what you've written, EYP but I think you are over-thinking it.

EYProvider · 01/12/2021 12:20

Which bit am I overthinking?

Start the thread then…

Reddit is governed by US law including the constitutional guarantee of free speech. MN is regulated by UK law which has no such guarantees and is subject to the UKs (IMHO) ridiculous libel laws which have in the past allowed crooks like Robert Maxwell to prevent reporting of their crimes during their lifetimes.
EYProvider · 01/12/2021 12:49

I would start a thread, but I don’t have the energy to deal with all the John Lennon was a wife beater and Yoko is a hero shit. I just can’t be bothered with all that irrelevance.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 01/12/2021 12:54

@EYProvider

Well, I think you are placing too much significance on the 'he knew he was going to be assassinated' part. It's a threat that comes with the territory when you are very famous. Princess Diana 'knew' she was going to be assassinated - there are published letters to that effect. That doesn't mean her death was anything but an accident.

I don't remember learning of JL's death but I was only 7 at the time so it wouldn't have meant a lot to me.

Well you'll never know how it would have turned out in that case.
Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2021 12:59

Here's last year's. Thought the Bono comment was quite funny.

Oh, well, there you go. Sam Green has been mentioned before.

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2021 14:18

Somebody has bumped it so now the thread title is factually incorrect. Brilliant.

EYProvider · 01/12/2021 14:24

Will they close that thread if I start posting links, @Sparklingbrook?

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2021 14:27

@EYProvider

Will they close that thread if I start posting links, *@Sparklingbrook*?
Only if someone reports the links and/or the thread and they deem them against guidelines presumably.
EYProvider · 01/12/2021 15:02

I’ve had a quick read of that threat, @Sparklingbrook, and I think you’re right. MN is not the place.

People’s views are too entrenched and they can’t get past WIFE BEATER JOHN and FEMINIST ICON YOKO.

One thing I will say about Ono - I don’t think much of her art, but she is an absolute genius at understanding how to construct an image and use it to distort history. A trailblazer in fact.

TheElvishQueen · 01/12/2021 15:55

I think you should start a thread @ EYProvider

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 01/12/2021 16:16

I'd be interested in a thread. I don't have a strong opinion about either John or Yoko, but I've read a few Beatles' biographies, including John's and I find their whole relationship quite frankly fascinating.

LondonWolf · 01/12/2021 16:26

Haven’t read the whole thread but I will. However, I couldn’t stand her at the time but I remember reading a very carefully worded article about how when they split PM turned on her completely eg he allegedly changed all the locks on joint properties without warning her so when she arrived to collect their child she was left on the street being harangued by paps. She couldn’t ever fight back against the full weight of public opinion or beloved “Macca” could she? I felt a bit sorry for her after that and tried to read between the lines whenever I read anything about her.

Coronawireless · 01/12/2021 16:26

@EightWheelGirl

I'm not sure she has a leg to stand on with ridiculous claims like not knowing who he was. Clearly bullshit IMO.
Not a leg to stand on eh

Why wouldn’t he change the locks? He clearly didn’t trust her. With good reason, no doubt.
DottyHarmer · 01/12/2021 16:30

HM was an old-fashioned gold digger. Male or female, makes no difference, it was getting someone newly bereaved. I think women are generally a bit more sensible, and don’t take any “flannel” as mil used to say. PM’s dcs really disliked her, which says something, but they seem to like the next wife.

People who have had happy marriages are, by all accounts, more likely to hastily remarry than those who had their ups and downs.

As for John and Yoko, I’ve read several contemporary views, and they were all just bemused at the pairing. I think John’s brain was a bit addled and he would have gone off with anyone if they had been persistent enough.

You must read the whole thread. Especially John Lennon's will apparently. Grin

They stayed together though, despite the couple of years when John was living with May .
