To wonder why we’re still obsessed with Covid.

Three times as many people are dying of cancer every single day. More than ten times as many people are dying every day of other causes. But we aren’t getting daily updates about these on every news bulletin or website. Yes, people should get vaccinated, yes occasionally people are still getting very ill with it, and some are dying. But it is very far from being the great danger that it was 12-18 months ago. Can we just move on from the endless focus on it now?

It's making people ill and is highly contagious so I find it very worrying.

ddl1 · 26/11/2021 18:46

Let's note that people with cancer are particularly vulnerable to Covid, especially if they've received immunosuppressant treatment or have blood cancer. These are precisely the sort of people for whom the vaccines may not be fully effective.

FreshFreesias · 26/11/2021 18:50

YANBU but you will be flamed by loads of Covid cultists on here.

Rosiebrown1 · 26/11/2021 18:51

Although vaccinated myself NOT willing to vaccinate my 5 year old DS.. (one Mumsnet member said they couldn’t wait for roll out of 5-12 year olds) MADNESS in my opinion

FreshFreesias · 26/11/2021 18:52

Seriously it’s like a religion to them.
Who said “when a man stops believing in god he will believe in anything” - it’s like he was talking about the Covid Cultists 😨

MGMidget · 26/11/2021 18:53

It is still causing lots of disruption because the rules still require isolation in a number of circumstances to try and stop too much spread. Then there is the precarious position the hospitals are in and the uncertainty of what will happen next with Covid ( eg the impact of new variants and the uncertainty of how long a vaccine can provide protection).

Covid can potentially explode and have a much bigger and more rapid impact on the population than other known illnesses so I think it is the uncertainty that is keeping it at the forefront of attention. We cant relax and forget about it at the moment.

PurpleDaisies · 26/11/2021 18:53

@plumpynoo

Just for info, ONS says that of the people who are currently in hospital within 28 days of testing positive for COVID (which is how they chart cases), only 35% of them are unvaccinated. So actually, the majority of people in hospital with COVID are vaccinated.
Just for info, 88.5% of people over 12 have had at least a first dose of a vaccine. In case anyone thinks this poster’s information shows that vaccines don’t work, look up base rate fallacy.

I found a nice illustration on twitter the other day.

To wonder why we’re still obsessed with Covid.

@Guacamole001

I went to my tiny post office this morning. It has enough room for a few in a queue. However the person behind me waited at the doorway before I left. She was acting like the height of the pandemic.

Perhaps she is high risk but I did think it was OTT.

What difference does it make to you, though? Did it do you any harm that they wished to stay well away? For all you knew, they may have some kind of medical condition that makes them vulnerable to covid even though vaccinated.

Of course they are, because something like 90% of the population are vaccinated. Do the Maths.
x2boys · 26/11/2021 18:59

@Cantfindafreeusername

I currently have Covid and TBH I am sure it’s actually a cold and not Covid. Seems so stupid to me that I have to stay in for 10 days for something I would normally shove a tissue in my pocket and jog off to work with! We need to get a grip and get on …..
Yeah my son had it in July a couple of days of feeling off ,and he was fine But it's not just about the individual if my son had passed it on to his Grandma ,she wouldn't have been fine as she's physically very frail .
AnnieSnap · 26/11/2021 19:10

We should still be worried about it because people with your attitude are taking no precautions and acting like it’s not an issue. In the UK alone there were 52,000 new cases today. 1000 people are dying (like 3 airliners crashing) and several times that number are being permanently disabled by it. Bear in mind that the more it spreads, the higher chance there is of a variant that is vaccine resistant and our lives will grind to a halt again, perhaps for a much, much longer period.

woodhill · 26/11/2021 19:12

People,who have had the top up vaccinations are still catching it and they are quite ill

AnnieSnap · 26/11/2021 19:16

1000 people a week that is

Nowinapanic451 · 26/11/2021 19:16

I really can't stand people's selfishness over this or the way that some people reduce the importance of human life. Vulnerable people are just as important as you and your son or daughter, and their actual lives are more important than your freedom to live your life as you please and enjoy first-world luxuries.

People are still dying in their thousands every day and will continue to do so until we get a handle on this virus, which we won't do unless everybody consistently follows barrier methods and the whole world is vaccinated.

I wish people would grow up and just stop being so fucking selfish. I'm young and want to live my life the way it was, but not at the cost of other people's lives - someone's parents, siblings, children...I mean, honestly. Just get a fucking grip, grit your teeth and grin and bear it.

pollymere · 26/11/2021 19:22

Despite vaccination programmes, I would say that over ten percent of school children have been infected in the last few months which has meant vast numbers have missed schooling and also risk infecting the non-vaccinated. There will also be people who get Covid as its something that needs a booster jab and we've not all done that yet. It is still really affecting daily life and we need to be careful to avoid another lockdown.

WinterIcelandicPony · 26/11/2021 19:25

I agree with @Nowinapanic451

and the pp who said that they have no responsibility to strangers. Well, part of being a member of a civilised societ and community is that you do feel a sense of responsbility to strangers. Oterwise, why would we pay taxes? Or drive according to the road rules and speed limit? Or not go out and actually actively harm people we may not know or who irritate the shit out of us? I honestly fail to understand why people see social distancing, or wearing masks or whatever is such a fucking affront to them? Like I said earlier- i am envious that people have no idea whatever what it is like to be afraid for a loved one in all this. That;s where they are, right now,. But in the fullness of time they might be grateful for a vaccine, or for a person not getting on a plane when they have active chicken pox, or for whatever other mitigations people might be doing every single day for the common good.

Those who have found that covid is nothing more than a small inconvenience... you are fortunate. You are lucky. Know that and wear your fucking mask and don't be so bloody smug.

Bertiebiscuit · 26/11/2021 20:15

YABU death from covid is entirely preventable unlike cancer etc, so of course people are talking about it and sane people take sensible precautions

Lifethroughlenses · 26/11/2021 20:46

@tttigress I agree with you. Kids have missed hugely important like events that they will never experience again like school residential trips and leavers stuff. And now they are all getting it anyway. Their sacrifice was almost entirely to protect other people. Which wouldn’t hack me off so much if I hadn’t heard my elderly neighbours constantly moaning about the irresponsible behaviour of the young.

Ddot · 26/11/2021 21:01

Well today I heard about a new strain, which the vaccine doesn't work on

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/11/2021 21:02

Because it’s preventing the people you are concerned about receiving the treatment the otherwise would.

Notallowedtobeanxious · 26/11/2021 21:06

@Ddot

Well let’s all go around licking faces and door handles then?
Sassoon · 26/11/2021 21:07

I think if you knew the impact it was having in hospitals and schools you might see why it's being taken so seriously. But I suspect you don't really give a shit tbh. The government could have made things easier by taking it seriously from the start instead of putting us all in this position but they didn't 🤷‍♀️

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 26/11/2021 21:10

I was bored of it after 2 months.

The media and the government will keep going on with it for the near future to keep us all occupied from other important things and to exercise their control over peoples lives.

Because death rates are so low due to vaccines, they're flinging cases in our faces every 2 fucking minutes. Couldn't care less if someone has a bad cold - because that's what the majority get.

Sick of it.

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 26/11/2021 21:12

@Ddot

Well today I heard about a new strain, which the vaccine doesn't work on
Where have you been?

The press have had a new vaccine evading variant every few months since the start. Then once the real world data comes through and shows the vaccines are protecting against it, they go quiet and go onto something else.

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 26/11/2021 21:14

You mean like the flu? We haven't locked ourselves up every winter when ten of thousands have been dying from it every year.

While were at it, we'll take cigarettes and alcohol off the shelves for all the self inflected deaths and treatments on the NHS that they take up every year. Biscuit
