To wonder why we’re still obsessed with Covid.

Three times as many people are dying of cancer every single day. More than ten times as many people are dying every day of other causes. But we aren’t getting daily updates about these on every news bulletin or website. Yes, people should get vaccinated, yes occasionally people are still getting very ill with it, and some are dying. But it is very far from being the great danger that it was 12-18 months ago. Can we just move on from the endless focus on it now?

I had to put on a hazmat suit and go into the ICU and say goodbye to someone very dear to me, he died from covid so having witnessed that I will be obsessed with covid for a very long time . It's easy to be blasé about a dreadful virus but when and if you are faced with an ICU visit to say goodbye you'll change your tune.
Oh and the person who died was 35years old.

I went to my tiny post office this morning. It has enough room for a few in a queue. However the person behind me waited at the doorway before I left. She was acting like the height of the pandemic.

Perhaps she is high risk but I did think it was OTT.

It's called social distancing ,we had over 50,000 cases today so I don't think it's OTT ,I haven't had COVID ,but I had a pretty nasty chest infection a few weeks ago that left me drained ,maybe we should all social distance a little bit .
WinterIcelandicPony · 26/11/2021 16:16

I honestly wish social distancing would come back and masks. God Such little things that people think are an affront to their human rights. Hmm

I would have done the same. Me doing that doesn't affect anyone else and I'm sick of being given funny looks when I wear a mask or move back from people. I'm one of the most vulnerable to covid and trying to protect myself while other people carry on like it doesn't exist. It does to me, and it does to my consultant
Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/11/2021 16:40

I'm not obsessed with Covid. As far as I'm concerned it's over. I'm not restricting my life in any way now.

You are fortunate that you are able to do so. With a CV child, a parent with cancer and having a severe and chronic lung condition myself I am envious of people who can shrug it off so easily.

You get others are not in the same position, right?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/11/2021 16:58

@WinterIcelandicPony of course I understand that. You need to do what's best for you. And I'll do what's best for me.

bordermidgebite · 26/11/2021 17:02

Trouble is you doing what's right for you restricts the options for others

I get that. But I'm not putting the needs of total strangers before the needs of my own family. Restrictions were not good for my DS.

YABU

CovidMakesThingsHard · 26/11/2021 17:34

Why?
Because not getting on top of covid means MORE people die of cancer and heart disease. When the hospital wards and staff are redirected to treat covid patients, cancer and heart stuff gets put back. Hospital referrals take longer and GPs are expected to manage stuff usually dealt with by hospitals.
So doing your PCR tests when you know it’s only a cold, or you have the wrong type of cough for covid, means less spreading it, less people taking up beds and freeing people up to see cancer patients again. And I speak as someone affected by cancer diagnosis delays from covid.

Pliudev · 26/11/2021 17:40

Well, with the new variants emerging in Africa, that don't respond to present vaccinations or immunity, you may be hearing a lot more about covid. Anyone who thinks this is over is kidding themselves. As for it mainly being the elderly who die, have you looked at the lists of victims who were not aged or unfit every one mourned by their families and friends? And even the elderly have folk who care about them.
Seems to me that wearing a mask is a small price to pay.

passionflower50 · 26/11/2021 17:40

Yabu I have family who have had covid recently 7 family members with covid most were vaccinated but still got it .one family member who was a sceptic has been left with bad breathing difficulties

What a load of bollocks

Makes aren't as useful as you seem to think. Plenty places have never dropped mask requirements and are still seeing surges.

And ask for the new variant escaping current vaccinations, no one knows this yet so why spout this nonsense ?

angela99999 · 26/11/2021 17:46

After what's happened with the potentially dangerous new variant today I'm guessing that you know why people are still going on about Covid.

Three times as many die of cancer, but cancer doesn't double every ten days if you don't keep a lid on it. That's why.

Yes, YABU

plumpynoo · 26/11/2021 18:34

Just for info, ONS says that of the people who are currently in hospital within 28 days of testing positive for COVID (which is how they chart cases), only 35% of them are unvaccinated. So actually, the majority of people in hospital with COVID are vaccinated.

GaolBhoAlba · 26/11/2021 18:36

YANBU. Its been almost 2 years, everyone eligible for vaccine has had the opportunity to be jabbed. Covid is here for keeps, if people feel they need to/wish to live the rest of their lives in isolation, that is their right. Mankind will, and absolutely should, go back to normal social interaction.

Cantfindafreeusername · 26/11/2021 18:39

I currently have Covid and TBH I am sure it’s actually a cold and not Covid. Seems so stupid to me that I have to stay in for 10 days for something I would normally shove a tissue in my pocket and jog off to work with! We need to get a grip and get on …..

PieTastic · 26/11/2021 18:39

Yanbu. If only cancer got the same focus.

Covid is tiresome, I never click on the articles. Let's just carry on as normal.

If a PCR has shown that it's Covid, then it's Covid. Glad that you have only cold symptoms (perhaps because you have been vaccinated?) but it could be much worse than that for someone else. And even if you don't put anyone in hospital, there are likely to be a lot more off work if people go in and spread it than if they do self-isolate. It's much more infectious than an average cold!

Colds don't really have the potential to put people in an ICU bed though do they?

Are people really that dim that they can't understand the enormity of this?
