To feel utterly depressed and hopeless about the cruel world we live in

What is the world coming to? So many cases of child abuse and cruelty - there's so much of it around.
Plus, parents being killed whilst children asleep upstairs, asylum seekers stuck in freezing cold woods for weeks on end, no food or milk for babies. A humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan... I could go on. what World are we living in?! Surely every life is as important as another, but it seems not. Where's the help for these people, what can we do to help?!
Sorry for the depressing rant, I just feel utterly hopeless this morning.

I nearly started a thread along these lines last week. I have had to actively avoid scrolling the news to avoid details of that particular case, but also a few others that have come up in the last couple of weeks.

I have found my emotional reaction has heightened significantly since have DS, it plays on my mind so much more because I just love him so much and the thought of him having any sadness at all in his life breaks my heart, and then to know there are children out there who have suffered and do suffer so horrifically is just emotionally overwhelming to me. Obviously these things aren’t new but I do agree with some of the previous posters that it seems to be reported more gratuitously and graphically than I can ever remember being the case before.

I also think that once reporting restrictions on that particular case are lifted we will be hearing a lot more as there will be enquiries, information probably revealed about all the failings of SS/authorities etc that will make us despair even more.

I don’t want to derail this thread by talking about religion/spirituality. But I truly hope and pray that that child is now at peace, whatever form that takes.

Lavender24 · 24/11/2021 16:38

Most people are NOT terrible. Most people are good people.

@FreeBritnee Most people will happily turn a blind eye and contribute to cruelty if it's convenient to do so.

SnottyLottie · 24/11/2021 16:40

I’ve been crying on and off for the past 24 hours because of THAT news story. I just can’t stop thinking about it and that little boy and what he went through.

I’m so glad you created this thread. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in feeling like this, that there are people out there who care and want to make a difference. I tried to talk to DH about it and he had to stop because he said we would be overcome with sadness if we dwell upon it too long. Clearly that’s what has happened. I’m trying to distract myself looking at clothes and cheerful things but I keep coming back to it. The world is such a terrible place at times.

tara66 · 24/11/2021 16:41

I just kept wondering about the concept of Biblical ''evil'' and ''wickedness'' - otherwise how do you explain extreme cruelty to young children by adults close to them enough to cause them very great pain and suffering and an appalling death? What is the mentality here? Can it be explained? This is supposed to be a ''civilised'' country. It makes me frightened about what people are really like.

SallyWD · 24/11/2021 16:47

I know what news story triggered this and I feel exactly the same. It's been disturbing my sleep and destroyed my peace of mind. I can't bear all the suffering in this world and I admit I have often lost faith in humans. I don't know what the answer is. I really don't. I just try and avoid these news stories the best I can. I try and focus on the good in the world and give my children all the love that these poor abused children should have received. It's utterly heartbreaking. We have to carry on and make our tiny corner of the world a better place.

Thefirsttime · 24/11/2021 16:48

@StrongbutTired00
No, not that case. Most of the posters on here are referring to the other horrific case which has been in the news recently. The court case started a bit earlier than the case you’re referring to but it’s still ongoing and several threads relating to it have been deleted.

Spidey66 · 24/11/2021 17:00

@LucentBlade

The world has sadly always been like this it’s just that with modern communication systems and social media it’s information readily available.
This.

If it causes upset, use that to campaign or raise funds for the Red Cross, UNICEF, OXFAM etc.

Dillydollydingdong · 24/11/2021 17:10

Poor little boy. I would have had him. People knew about it. Why didn't they do something? There are other stories on social media, equally horrific, about animal cruelty. Its best not to think about them too much. Sad

thebabessavedme · 24/11/2021 17:34

@Lavender24, I think I would bow out of humanity if I believed that - so very many people throughout the world put themselves last to fight for the oppressed, the disenfranchised, the abused, the old etc. Right now I feel very cynical about 'society' but I refuse to 'give up'. I still believe that the majority of us are decent people.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/11/2021 17:56

I have been feeling this way too. But you only have to read the comments here and look around us in the streets to know that the vast majority of people are good and the reasons why these horrific stories make the headlines is because people are so horrified by them.

There are certainly some very evil people in the world though and that’s a very scary thing. People who seem “normal”, who live in ordinary houses with wax burners in their lounge and heart shaped photos (you know what I’m talking about, seen in the video) and still they do the most unimaginable and unspeakable things. They walk among us. It’s terrible.

Silverswirl · 24/11/2021 18:01

Awful what happened in this case with this boy. There are cruel evil people in this world.
You have to keep in mind though that the amount of well loved and wonderfully cared for children far far outweighed the neglected or abused ones thank goodness. In fact we actually live in maybe the most child centric times in human history (in developed nations at least)
The fact that we all care so deeply and it has affected us so much shows that.
In eras gone past kids were very much there to be ignored or hit/ punished/ seen as a total nuisance. Even in schools and churches. Hopefully for the majority that is not the case now!

LittleDandelionClock · 24/11/2021 18:08

It's always been shit. We just hear more about it these days.

LittleDandelionClock · 24/11/2021 18:10

@Lavender24

What rot.

You don't know every person in the country, or in the world, and cannot possibly make such a bold sweeping generalisation. There are many kind people in the world, and far more than nasty people, so your statement is utter bollux IMO.

MariaAngustias · 24/11/2021 18:17

Just wanted to say that I feel that a lot - lots of awful things too many to mention and it really does get me down. Sometimes I have to have a break from the news and that does help. Also I try to just do my best everyday with small stuff - like give my (rescue) dog a nice life, be kind to family and friends etc..... getting into nature helps - simple stuff like kicking a pile of leaves, walking on the beach or just being out in the open air. Try to remember that, although people can be unbelievably awful and cruel, many people are kind and good. I am sending you a virtual hug.

Twocrabs30 · 24/11/2021 18:24

I have been kissing and cuddling and holding my beautiful children a little tighter this last week, thinking of that news story.

It has made me so sad too. So vulnerable, and the horror of his plight. It’s just not right or fair.

User135644 · 24/11/2021 19:15

The women's hospital terrorist incident really got to me last week.

How anyone could try and target new born babies and their mothers like that. It's like some people want to be as heinous as possible.

Lavender24 · 24/11/2021 20:00

@LittleDandelionClock most people fund cruelty and unimaginable suffering every time they sit down to eat so I do not think my statement is "utter bollux".

Cruiser123 · 24/11/2021 20:12

@Lavender24

Are you honestly comparing eating meat to "that case"?

If yes, you need to give your head a wobble.

PlacidPenelope · 24/11/2021 20:30

I think the video referred to in this thread will haunt all those involved in the case who have had to watch it and hear it in full (with the notable exception of two) for the rest of their days the same as the Lesley Anne Downey tape did in the trial of Brady and Hindley.

The whole case is just horrendous.

bellamountain · 24/11/2021 20:51

OP it seems most of us all are all thinking of the same case. I couldn't sleep last night because of it and I haven't read a full article or watch the video. It's just the constant snippets we are being fed by the media, the 24/7 news is relentless. This has deeply affected me.

I would get behind a campaign to bring safeguarding issues to the wider public. Public information videos on prime time tv. Currently only if you work with children do you have safeguarding training but it's not enough. Neighbours, friends and family, everyone needs to know what to look out for.

Gin4thewin4 · 24/11/2021 21:07

Your safe now wee man
Sad

Devastating.💔

EmeraldShamrock · 24/11/2021 21:13

The lack of human rights for DC in some countries are appalling.
DC with disabilities institutionalised tied up in a cot all day, children used for hard labour, trafficked for camel racing, sex trade, yep its a sick place.

EvilPea · 24/11/2021 21:18

I’ve purposefully avoided the reporting of it. I’ve just seen a headline that breaks my heart.

That poor poor soul

The actual intended target was the remembrance day parade
PomRuns · 24/11/2021 21:38

@Toastytoads my daughter also came into bed last night and I couldn't get back to sleep. It's just horrific.
