Stella Creasy

Just had a little look on Twitter and seen Stella Creasy is having a rant as she can't take her 3m old into work with her.

This has pissed me right off. How many parents in the UK have child care problems.

Her argument is based on Mat leave which to me is a completely different fight.

Am I being unreasonable to be pissed off by this?

@urbanbuddha
Her point is that MPs need to come from all sections of society in order to fairly represent the electorate. That includes young mothers. I agree with her. Other countries manage.

Lots of places of work employ young mothers. Those mothers are not allowed to take their children into meetings, out to meet clients, have them in a sling round their neck in an office whilst doing general office work. Even people who work from home are instructed that they must have child care in place and not be combining it themselves with their work for their employers.

These companies are not doing it to be mean to mothers but all mothers know that children are time consuming and distracting. There's no way you can do your job properly whilst your trying to comfort and keep your baby quiet.

What about the co-workers? They have to share offices. They need to concentrate too. They don't want to have to listen to babies grizzling or crying or screaming and listen to parents chatting and singing to pacify them. Work is work.

Where I worked, we did serious stuff. I needed to concentrate on what I was doing and not make mistakes. And when I had a break, I wanted adult, relaxing conversation. I didn't want to be faced with noisy toddlers running around.

I want women, which included mothers, in Parliament. The HoC provided good childcare arrangements. Why can't mothers avail themselves of it?

You're being ridiculous. Where have I said that women shouldn't be in Parliament? How is saying put your child in the HoC creche the same as saying women shouldn't be in Parliament?

How is having her baby with her an issue? I just don’t get it. Re my previous post, women need greater options and I can’t see why so many people are anti Stella’s request unless they are bringing their own baggage to the party. This baby is very young to be left in a crèche, so why not let her?

I have no baby baggage.
Babies don't just impact on the concentration of the mother, they impact on the working ability of people around them. You wouldn't be happy if I were your child's teacher and your child told you they hadn't had proper lessons because I was looking after my baby. Or you went to the doctor and you felt they weren't listening fully to what you were saying because their toddler was crawling round the floor or screaming. Or maybe you're saying there'll be rules for some and not for others? In which case, the rule has been made for mps.
Stella Creasy doesnt want to just take a tiny baby into the HoC. She was still taking her child into the chamber when it was at least 7 months old.

I understand that she doesn't want to leave the baby. However, having a baby in the workplace impacts massively on the people around you, as madisonbridges explained in her post. Apart from the noise and distraction, some people will find it distressing. I know I would.

We're talking about a babe in arms not toddlers.

The point about Stella Creasey being in the chamber is that SHE should be there to represent her constituents during debates. A proxy can cast her vote for her or even conceivably make a speech but would be unable to respond to points made during debates which is an essential part of the job.

Agreed - but the critical word here is women, not just MPs.

Stella is adamant that she has put forwards / been involved with a bill asking for like for like cover for all women and not just MPs - she's been asked directly several times to share a link but is then not doing so - does anyone actually have a link please? She is sharing her pregnant then screwed campaign work repeatedly.

A 7mth old is not a baby in arms and she was taking her last child on at least that age.

I didn't mention toddlers on the house, I said in the tearooms which is happening now.
Quote from Stella Ceasys own article in the Guardian...
"with some MPs berated for taking toddlers into the tea room between votes"
Stella Creasy can go on maternity leave and leave those questions to be asked by others. She's not the only person who can ask questions. There are next to no matters discussed that effect solely Walthamstow so others will be asking questions too. She took her 7mth old into the HofC to speak about abortion in NI. I respect her for her carrying out campaigns that she feels strongly about, but it wasn't really a Walthamstow question, was it? I mean her constituents wouldn't have been disenfranchised or gnashing their teeth if she hadn't asked that question. (Leaving aside that she was complaining that it was unsafe for MPs not to wear masks but she took her young child into that so-called unsafe environment).

If she wants to attend, she might not even get asked to respond in a debate and if she wants to nurse her child she can listen on a monitor and enter the house to ask questions. There's no need to to take a 7mth old or even a 3 mth old into the chamber.

Women need equality.

If the general attitude remains that a woman should be excluded because she is mother to a baby change will not happen. Patriachal attitudes need to be challenged and changed.

She not being excluded from Parliament.
She can take maternity leave and stay away from the House.
She can take maternity leave and just pick out the bits of her working life she feels she wants to do, like making a speech.
She can refuse maternity leave completely and attend as much as she likes.
No one objected to her being in Westminster with her baby but no one, man or woman, can take any child into the chamber.

Once again, where is the baby’s father in all this. Why isn’t he looking after the baby when she needs to be in parliament. This woman is no feminist, she is just an embarrassing self publicist.

Society at large needs to accept that small babies pretty much banjax their mother's options for work or any other kind of personal space, for a very short time.

My DS happily went to nursery at six months old, and I went to work. For six months of my life I couldn't meaningfully work, and I knew that before I decided to have him.

If women of child bearing age push this agenda (babies in the workplace) then employers will be less inclined to offer them jobs.

Maybe they don’t want to feel pressure do do everything? Maybe they prefer being able to separate parenting time and work time while leaving the children in a safe environment?

I think trying to create a system whereby it’s almost expected women can do it all at the same time is much worse than having one with clear boundaries but good childcare provision.

Because people should not be forced to work alongside people who literally shit themselves.

Imagine if women were men, just for a second. Imagine if we were the leaders since the dawn of time and not men. None of you haters would bat an eyelid at this. You’ve been conditioned by society to have views that prevent women from succeeding without a huge cost to their familial lives, relationships, bank balances re childcare, lack of pensions and earning ability compared with men. Until people change their attitudes to become less biased and leave their own ‘emotional baggage’ out of a debate like this, change won’t happen for women. I see 00000.1% of my working environment with women over 40 and it’s because women give up when they have kids. The barriers are too high, the hurdles too big. And that’s without being a single mum or having kids with additional needs. Stella Creasy is right to challenge the status quo for ALL of us but mostly for our daughters.
