I seen this when I was in store today and it just didn't sit right with me. I do have a neurodiverse DD so that might be colouring my view slightly.

I don't see anything wrong with it to be honest, just a bit of humour

alienbaby · 21/11/2021 18:34

I love it

Bumtum126 · 21/11/2021 18:34

Can't see much wrong with it

Againstmachine · 21/11/2021 18:34

Getting upset over nothing, and I suffer fr.mental illness it doesn't offend

SandraOhh · 21/11/2021 18:35

I think it's just humour OP. Do you get upset at general use of the word e.g. when NT people say they're having a meltdown?

Sackofnickles · 21/11/2021 18:36

Literally anyone and everyone can have a meltdown. Snowmen included.

I like it.

ivfbabymomma1 · 21/11/2021 18:36

I need this jumper!!

Effinell · 21/11/2021 18:36

I associate meltdown with autism but happy to accept that that's just me

Humour, like banter, it's OK as long as it's not taking the piss out of something important to you.

A meltdown isn't funny. It's certainly not for others to laugh at.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 21/11/2021 18:37

I'd say don't wear it unless you're ND. I'm autistic.

CorrBlimeyGG · 21/11/2021 18:37

when NT people say they're having a meltdown?

I'd assume they're ignorant.

Concestor · 21/11/2021 18:37

Not just you op but a lot of people in here are very ableist, perhaps without realising. It's an awful jumper that makes light of being autistic.

Megan2018 · 21/11/2021 18:38

My toddler has a meltdown once every 30 seconds. It would feel highly appropriate to me. Hers are hilarious.
I don’t think the ND community can own meltdowns.

sellthesizzle · 21/11/2021 18:40

I think you can choose to be offended or choose not to be - personally I'd recommend choosing not to be, it's not intended to be offensive it's intended to be humorous.

sonjadog · 21/11/2021 18:41

Is the expression "having a meltdown" particularly related to autism? I had no idea. I thought it was a widely used expression.

PinkyU · 21/11/2021 18:42

The issue is that the language has been appropriated by the NT community to mean a tantrum, and so now, the neurodiverse community have no language that expresses the biological phenomena that they actually experience during a “meltdown”.

And worse, when a ND person does experience a “meltdown” it’s conflated with tantrum and the ND person is not only not offered the correct support they are often judged and treated appallingly for “misbehaving”.

HugeAckmansWife · 21/11/2021 18:42

But 'meltdown' isn't really a medical term is it? I know it's used to differentiate an autistic spectrum episode over a general tantrum but it's not unique. You can have a nuclear meltdown for instance. In this instance, applied to a snowman who can and is literally melting, I really think to be offended is somewhat reaching.

DockOTheBay · 21/11/2021 18:44

I've heard many people saying their toddler had a meltdown, all NT as far as I know.
Inastatus · 21/11/2021 18:44

SpinachIsAGatewayDrug · 21/11/2021 18:44

I thought the nuclear description is the 'real' meaning. Ie the original use. Because the core actually melts down?

Genuinely never knew it had a specific autistic meaning. Every day's a school day, I guess.

nohouseyet · 21/11/2021 18:45

The word ‘meltdown’ isn’t exclusive to those with autism even though it’s common in that context.

TurnUpTurnip · 21/11/2021 18:46

I quite like it and I have an autistic child! I would buy it for her 😬

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 21/11/2021 18:46

I am NT and I find this a bit off...yes not only ND people have meltdowns...but it's a normal part of toddler hood. I imagine if you're struggling with your older ND childs meltdowns caused by something like autism and it's no longer cute or funny but actually distressing for everyone involved, that it wouldn't be funny. There are loads of other christmas puns they could have used

PinkyU · 21/11/2021 18:46

@Megan2018 if your child’s “meltdown” is hilarious they’re not having one, they’re having a tantrum.

If you actually had experience of a “meltdown” you’d feel as helpless and scared as I do when I watch my little girl pull her hair out till her scalp bleeds because she can’t cope with something I can’t hear, see or change for her.

AnnaSW1 · 21/11/2021 18:48

I don't agree with the attempted sole ownership of meltdowns. All small child can have meltdowns.
