To be jealous of Amanda Owen (Yorkshire Shepherdess)

Her life just looks amazing. Yes obviously hard at times and not perfect. But 9 lovely children, she's gorgeous, kind husband, successful career, meaningful job and being able to spend time outdoors with her family. All the animals and space.
What I'd give for that life!

9 children, IMO, is a bit irresponsible.

knittingaddict · 21/11/2021 09:08

GrimDamnFanjo.

Yes you heard right, crow pie. I'm not making it up. The husband came from a farming family and I think he would literally eat anything. They weren't the joking sort. I had a choice between crow pie and chicken. I chose chicken and had to trust that it's what they fed me. Eating there was always an experience. I thought it was a bit much to eat carrion, but that's what he shot and she cooked.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

I'm not sure what's wrong with looking after younger siblings, it's a good thing in the main.
Eye much depends to what extent. Watching your younger sibling every so often, but still being able o,do every day normal teenage activities, going out, seeing friends, etc - fine Having to stay home, miss school, not being able to see friends, being restricted in their own interests and activities, having to take over parenting roles = not so fine

Children generally have no choice in whether they have a sibling or not. They don't ask to become a substitute parent for a younger child.

In the main, a parent decides if they want more children and it is the aren't job to care for and parent their children, not to pass it on to their older children.

PickupaPenguin8 · 21/11/2021 10:48

They live in a very isolated area with no public transport. They don’t go out and see friends like other children might. Their activities are all planned in advance.
Their life revolves around their family. The children are all very lovely and well brought up. They are much happier than a lot of city kids.

Idony · 21/11/2021 10:54

Bunch of weird "yuck" comments about having children, or "why" a couple would have children. For a site called 'mumsnet' there really is a weird dislike of having kids. Some of us love having children, love having them around us and love being parents, which you'd hardly guess from the amount of threads bemoaning parenthood.

Lumilly · 21/11/2021 11:04

@Supermohican

Interesting that so many people repeat that Raven is doing medicine
Amanda said she was at one point.
PickupaPenguin8 · 21/11/2021 11:09

It’s Bio medicine. They mention it in the last series

You’re only allowed 2 and your husband has to be within 2 years of your own age either way. It’s the rules, remember? 😉

There’s no such degree as ‘biomedicine’ in the UK. There’s biomedical science, which is a clinical analytical science not medicine.
HaroldSteptoesHorse · 21/11/2021 11:32

Why spend energy being jealous? You don’t know what goes on when cameras aren’t there, he and Clive are apparently having marital issues.
Her dream is being a shepherdess … what’s you dream?

EdenFlower · 21/11/2021 11:38

From what I gathered Raven wanted to study veterinary science but didn't get high enough in her A levels to do so so is study another science related degree instead. It could well be biomedical science but I'm not sure.

WeeTattieBogle · 21/11/2021 13:31

@EdenFlower

I think the confusion arose from Clive saying in the previous season that Raven was away at university studying medicine. I suspect it was a quick way of explaining where she was.

PickupaPenguin8 · 21/11/2021 15:40

The narrator has mentioned at least twice Biomedicine. It must be Biomedical science whatever the difference is, but why nitpick? What does it matter what she’s studying?

VladmirsPoutine · 21/11/2021 15:46

@PickupaPenguin8 I think for some people it does because if it were medicine it would carry some sort of prestige... rolls eyes

But I was under the impression it was medicine? I briefly watched parts of it and I'm sure they said she'd come home from Uni for a few days or whatever during the holidays and she was a medical student?

Youdoyoutoday · 21/11/2021 16:50

9 kids and smelly animals?? No thanks!

5foot5 · 21/11/2021 16:55

I wouldn't want her life but I am really sorry if it is the case that they have split. It is one of my favourite feel good programmes and I love the ay the kids are always encouraged to do things.

Biomedical science is usually part of the university's medicine department iirr. Dd knows a couple of friends doing this degree and I'm sure she said they were based in the Medicine block.

PickupaPenguin8 · 21/11/2021 16:57

I have never ever seen either parent be anything but loving and encouraging. You can say it’s all for the cameras, but Indont think so. They are fantastic parents. The children are so loving to one another too.

HarrietPierce · 21/11/2021 17:35

Raven is studying Biomedical Science at York St John.

I thought the comments were about having NINE children, not just ''children'. Perhaps we are reading a different thread? Anyway, I get it, you are much better than anyone else because you love absolutely everything about parenting and that quite obviously makes you a Real Woman. Enjoy your superiority!
MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 21/11/2021 18:32

@Kikkomam

Clearly they've survived so far!
That's true of everyone who has a fatal accident until it isn't.
MsMoody · 21/11/2021 18:47

I studied biochemistry and it wasn’t unheard of that some students would transfer over to medicine after a year or two if that’s what they really wanted to do. So possibly she did study one and then the other.

EdenFlower · 21/11/2021 18:56

Biomedical Science is a common alternative for those that don't get the grades they need for a medical degree. It allows them to study in the medical field, often getting jobs in medical research when they qualify but not go on to be actual doctors.

EdenFlower · 21/11/2021 18:58

Nothing wrong with that BTW, it's well respected and something I looked into for my own daughter who not long ago was looking at applying for medicine. (she's changed her mind, somewhat to my relief really)

sluj · 21/11/2021 19:10

You can't study medicine at York St John, they don't offer it. Though I think we are off the topic a bit here.....
