To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

@PlausibleSuit we also had an excellent meal at the White Swan in Fence. Unfortunately we haven’t eaten anywhere so nice since dd was born 4 years ago!

Daftasabroom · 19/11/2021 12:45

Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant. Aweful.

RubyTuesday70 · 19/11/2021 12:45

Jamie Oliver in London, so disappointing.

Local hotel/gastropub called The Frogmill near Cheltenham..... used to be Marco Pierre White. We had afternoon tea as a gift, were shown to a grubby conservatory with weird leather table cloths, and as we'd requested a vegeterian option, we were given cheese and pickle sandwiches, dry fruit cake, and crumbly over baked scones. It was utterly grim and we had the awful dilema of do we tell the people who booked it so they didn't book for someone else.........

Mummylewi · 19/11/2021 12:45

Alain ducasse at the Dorchester. I've eaten in better one stars, the most slow service that I've ever experienced. Le manoir also overrated, but the rooms are incredible.

My husband is a chef and we're lucky that we get to go to lots of lovely restaurants. I'd recommend the coach over the hand any day!

PlausibleSuit · 19/11/2021 12:45

Yeah I don't like Tattu either. The one here in Edinburgh is very... bridge and tunnel.

Any London restaurant that's sold on 'the view' is universally terrible, in my opinion. Duck & Waffle (there's one of those coming to Edinburgh now, god help us), Oxo Tower, Windows at Galvin or whatever its called now -- all exceptionally underwhelming.

Duck & Waffle was particularly awful. I got quite Janice and Ray about it all. 'Duck... on a waffle. Waffle, wi' duck on it. The dirty, robbin' bastards.'

inigomontoyahwillcox · 19/11/2021 12:46

The Ivy (the original - when it was "the place to be"). Decidedly uninspiring.

Mummylewi · 19/11/2021 12:46

@KatherineJaneway just came here to say the same!

MrsToothyBitch · 19/11/2021 12:46

Some of the chains here are definitely on my meh list, not surprised to see them. Jamie's Italian in particular, it's one of the few I outright "no". I also refuse to give money to Five Guys, I really don't like it.

My husband is going there for his birthday next month. With his mum not me. I just laughed at the dinner menu with "AGED BEEF gordal olive juice warm fat" and so I am not going

A lot of the more recent restaurant openings in Manchester seem to have neglected food and comfort of diners in favour of Instagram interiors and packing them in. I'm not saying they should all be snotty maitre'd barring anyone who isn't from the right part of South Manchester or Cheshire but somehow it feels different now. Like nobody, customer or owner cares about the food, just being seen and being seen to be seen.

Lovemusic33 · 19/11/2021 13:12

Another vote for Nando’s , it’s just chicken, nothing I couldn’t cook at home 🤔.

KatherineJaneway · 19/11/2021 13:12

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester. Terrible food and service.

Noma in Copenhagen. Awful food, just truly awful.

Another vote for nandos! Dreadful

Whammyyammy · 19/11/2021 13:14

Miller and Carter, its ok, but our bill is always around £150 for two of us, and its just mediocre. Only go as oh likes it

Honkingallthewaytothebank · 19/11/2021 13:16

Nobu. Two different ones.

Bills. All of them.

GarlandsinGreece · 19/11/2021 13:17

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. Couldn’t live up to the pretentiousness; bizarre flavors.

FitAt50 · 19/11/2021 13:17

@girlmom21

Bella Italia. Modestly priced but the foods always just very average. Then again I don't like the similar chains like Frankie and Bennys etc either.
BELLA ITALIA would need to be rated by someone to be considered 'overrated' - its just fastfood with waitress service.
Smeds · 19/11/2021 13:20

The Witchery in Edinburgh. Grumpy staff, mediocre food, expensive. I'll never forget the look on DH's face when he was presented with 2 mouthfuls of steak and 4 chips!

I'm also not a fan of eating in the dark.

Oh I'm so glad I've seen this post!! I was about to book for DH's birthday.
valerianroot · 19/11/2021 13:22

Gloria's in Shoreditch. Took us forever to get a booking and had heard such amazing things about it. When we got there the food and service were just awful and it's really expensive too. Looks very pretty on Instagram, not so great IRL

beguilingeyes · 19/11/2021 13:23

The only time it's worth going to Duck and Waffle is for breakfast. The breakfast is good and the view (and that lift!) is totally worth it.

catsareme14 · 19/11/2021 13:23

Afternoon tea at The Ivy , awful . Meal at a Jamie Oliver place . Food was cold & horrible.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 19/11/2021 13:23

I didn’t like Tattu either, OP. I went to the Manchester one. A lot of money spent on glitzy ‘selfie’ interiors and not enough thought into the food.

Also agree re Miller & Carter. Overpriced for what is, essentially a Harvester for steak.

Sexy Fish. Absolutely shite, just a place ‘to be seen’.

LubaLuca · 19/11/2021 13:23

Wahaca. Most of what I ordered was burnt, the rest was cold. The staff couldn't have cared less.

Fatgalslim · 19/11/2021 13:24

@TooWicked

The Ivy

Gino De Campo’s restaurants - I’ve have had even a half decent meal in any of them.

Used to work in a place next door to one of his restaurants, was surprised to see a weekly delivery of dough balls arrive with the name of another Italian restaurant all over them. So they don't make everything fresh then.
