To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

Also adding The Gate here. A few veggie/vegan restaurants in London.
Went just after indoor dining resumed this summer, having eaten in a few branches over the years.
Was absolutely awful in every way & not Covid secure at all.
I wish we’d read the trip advisor reviews beforehand as we prob ordered the worst two things on the menu!!

babouchette · 20/11/2021 18:19

Hoppers in Soho. We went when it was the hot new opening and we queued for ages to get in. I found the food practically inedible!

babouchette · 20/11/2021 18:40

Oh, and recently, Gloria in Shoreditch. Booked weeks in advance, the food was average, the service below par and the place was packed with instagrammers. Style over substance.

WheelieBinPrincess · 20/11/2021 19:01

A HELL of a lot of these places are style over substance, aren’t they?

UniversalAunt · 20/11/2021 19:03

‘ Barbecoa at St Pauls’ - I used to peer through the plate glass window at the various cuts hanging to cure & all the merch on display.

Curious but not enough to try it out as I’d not been impressed by previous experiences of the JO empire.

Oblomov21 · 20/11/2021 19:13

Interesting. Ds1 is at the Ivy tonight.

WheelieBinPrincess · 20/11/2021 19:14

@Oblomov21 is it THE ivy though?

WildRosie · 20/11/2021 19:16

Aagrah, Pudsey. I've only been once and it was no great shakes. The Old Delhi (Corner Cafe) on Burley Road in Leeds was miles better. Excellent ale from The Queen over the road too. The Queen is now a Tesco😡.

‘ I can remember when the first Bills was a greengrocers in a small Sussex town, and for reasons unknown they started doing a few snacks and serving coffee.’ Same here.

Odd little caff up the stairs.

They got very lucky, one of the few to benefit from the disaster of the Lewes floods. Throw in some venture capital & Whizbang, we’ve got ourselves a chain run by spreadsheet & no taste buds.

By the time Bills got to Brighton, it was done.

We had a local Bills open in the worst premises in the worst road. It was doomed to fail as passing foot traffic would not even notice the toad & there was nothing nearby to lure punters in. Besides loads of nearby caffs were family run, in better character shops in prime location for that area. Really bad business decision to open up a new venture there.

Someone somewhere relied upon a flat map & estate agent spiel. An afternoon moseying round the area would show why no other business had chosen the site.

Which reinforces the point that once the chain money is in charge, the dining experience takes a dive.

Yet.... I recently tried Bills at Windsor for a family scoff & it was OK. I notice the delivery crates, that came through as we were eating (!) had Cote embossed on the side.

Oh don't start that debate. The last thread about The Ivy versus THE Ivy was a car crash. Grin

Landof · 20/11/2021 19:29

I only clicked on this thread to see how long it would take someone to mention nandos. Haha. 1st page.
I like nandos! Not in the same 'rave' way as others. But I do enjoy it.

knittingaddict · 20/11/2021 19:32

We didn't really like the restaurant that was number 1 for years in our city. It got almost all 5 star reviews on tripadvisor and everyone seemed to love it. I though it the food was underwhelming, it was very noisy (had to shout to hold a conversations) and the service was too fussy and over the top. They were constantly brushing down the table cloth with one little brushes.

I don't like really formal dining though.

knittingaddict · 20/11/2021 19:32

One of those little brushes

Titsywoo · 20/11/2021 19:36

I went for lunch at Celeste at The Lanesborough in London and it wasnt great. Food cold, canapés had rock hard bases (nearly cracked a tooth!) and the toast with my terrine was burnt and again really hard.

Dacquoise · 20/11/2021 19:45

Mirabelle was very meh, fortunately not paying the bill. Best place was The River Cafe. However there are lots of great pubs that serve excellent food at a faction of the cost so don't understand the fuss about some of these restaurants.

ColinTheKoala · 20/11/2021 19:50

I went to the Oxo Tower about 20 years ago and it was rubbish. I wasn't paying though. Food might have been ok, I can't remember, but service was really rude.

I also went to Busaba at Covent Garden abotu three years ago nd the staff were rude.

I think the service often is rude in London. But I went to Pizza Express near Waterloo station last week and the staff were lovely!

A hidden gem is the Three Hares pub in Bilbrough near York. Very pretty village, lovely pub, good food and friendly service. Found it quite by accident and were really happy.

Malibuismysecrethome · 20/11/2021 19:51

Le Caprice was seriously underwhelming when I went.

Oblomov21 · 20/11/2021 20:27

The Ivy? Is there a real one? Ds showed me the menu and it looked like a brasserie, cheeseburgers and shepherds pie.

I imagined the Ivy really posh, Michelin star. Clearly not.

WheelieBinPrincess · 20/11/2021 20:29

@Oblomov21 aye that’ll be the chain- bistro is correct- although the buildings and surroundings are quite ‘instagrammable’. There’s one in every city now I think.

CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark · 20/11/2021 20:32

Sexy Fish. Truly atrocious!

I liked Tattu

TwoPaperAirplanes · 20/11/2021 20:40

@beguilingeyes

Chains are always going to be very average though aren't they? Having said that Wagamama and Pizza Express are reliable. Especially if you're away from home. I've had some amazing meals in London from greasy spoons upwards (Wong Kei FTW) and I can't think of any that have been massively disappointing. Couple of mediocre afternoon teas. The Goring, I'm looking at you.
I'm so glad Wong Kei is still as good as I remember for what it is!

I agree with The Ivy. Such a shame as it used to be fabulous!

Tattu I've always loved

Ohwhatfunwehad · 20/11/2021 20:50

Inamo. Utter rip off to be sat in the basement with a 90 minute limit. £15 for a poorly crafted cocktail. Food was meh.
Five Guys
Dishoom

Toktokboki · 20/11/2021 20:51

Nobu, what a waste of time and money. DH likes it. I came home and ate a crumpet.

liliainterfrutices · 20/11/2021 21:35

Cafe Paradiso in Cork. Upmarket vegetarian restaurant. Pretty expensive and I was always starving within an hour of leaving there.

wheresmyshoe · 20/11/2021 21:38

Hide, I picked it and I cringed the whole way through. Tacky tacky tack from the champagne trolley to the built in phone charger drawers on the tables to the handbag stools. Good distinctly average and all the hard surfaces meant it was LOUD with noise bouncing everywhere. I apologised to my guest for choosing it.
