I'll start. Mine was in the form of a post on the Postsecret website years ago, where people make postcards, sharing secrets anonymously. This one jumped out at me as it simply said 'You get what you settle for.' For me at the time, those were the exact words I needed to hear. I was heading towardsthe end of a failing marriage (aged 30) and thinking about whether to stay with him or not. In that moment I chose not to settle for what had become an unhappy situation for the rest of my life. 10 years on and I still remember that as a pivotal moment, seeing the sentiment I needed to help me make my decision. I have no regrets 😊
So what advice have you received that stuck with you?

Look things in the face and know them for what they are.

Bananalanacake · 17/11/2021 13:10

Don't waste time with shitty men.

DelurkingAJ · 17/11/2021 13:15

DM to me at 17 (I’d just told her I was going on the pill). “Just remember, if the sex is bad dump him”.

hangrylady · 17/11/2021 13:17

Never be financially dependent on a man. Thanks DM.

FrancescaContini · 17/11/2021 13:19

Always have your own savings account.

There comes a time when you have to stop crossing oceans for people who wouldn't even jump puddles for you.

‘Do your best and forget the rest’- one to live by
‘Not my monkey, not my circus’ - to not get overly involved or invested in someone else’s issues or drama
‘Dogs bark’- for when people chat shit

Procrastination is the thief of time! So true

Don't let the bastards grind you down. Best piece of advice my father ever gave to me.

Resentment is like drinking poison hoping the other person will die. This helped me get over a shitty appraisal from an impersonal boss.

It's actually a lyric from a song but, 'bitches keep bitching, whores keep whoring but don't bother praying 'cause ain't nothing's changing'
Helped me get over a nasty letter written by my SIL to my DH slagging us off even though we had got into debt by thousands of pounds to attend her overseas wedding and our associated costs. It took us by surprise not least because I thought she would be on cloud 9. I'll just say, 'family drama' and leave it at that. (Yes, they and us are still married.)

SunsetSmartmeter · 17/11/2021 13:33

Both of mine are about time really, and making the most of it.

When I was desperately sad going through fertility treatment my ex-wife said to me that we needed to take what we could from each day. Even if it was seeing a nice blue sky or a happy dog. Such a simple statement but it's always stayed with me. The infertility was consuming my every waking thought and I realised I couldn't fast forward or resolve it at that moment - I had to keep going and try to take something positive from the day I was living through instead of wishing time away for a future that might not come. She does my head in at times (still tied through the kids we eventually) had but she's a decent sort and I'll never forget that.

My late beloved Grandad used to say: "Time, it's unstoppable." By which he meant get on with life because there's no turning the clock back or having another one of today. That one resonates more the older I get. At 46 I suddenly realised the other day that one day I'll be sat there and I'll be 86 like he was the last time he said that to me. I need to make the most of the next 40 years or he'll be having words with me Grin

It all begins and ends in your mind, what you give power to has power over you, if you allow it.

And also:

No response is a response

WhatdoImean · 17/11/2021 13:53

"Always check that there is toilet paper BEFORE you sit down..."

Has so many applications :-)

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 17/11/2021 13:54

Be financially independent.

Don’t try and please everyone.

0lgaDaPolga · 17/11/2021 13:56

Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t ask for advice.

It used to get to me so much that my mil would pick holes, question and criticise every parenting decision I would make. It was a bit of a revelation for me when I realised that she and I are very different people and that I should care much less what she thinks as she is not someone I would ever ask for advice.

If you can see brake lights your foot should be off the accelerator.

Go with the flow.

Nothing is permanent- a Buddhist saying. I found it weirdly comforting after my DF died, because it put his death in a context of continuous change. It has also helped me come to terms with other losses.

bigeegit · 17/11/2021 14:09

One that really struck me was a recent one, I saw a video of an amazing woman in her 70s wondering if she should quit work as a dentist because she felt it was time. She was initially concerned about losing her identity as a dentist but then concluded that being a dentist was her job, it wasnt who she was and as she put it she was a "soul having a human experience". I just loved that way of thinking. You are not what you do, what you have, your body, your circumstances, you are your soul and you are here temporarily to have a human experience. For some reason it resonated with me and made problems seem quite trivial.

Aggy35 · 17/11/2021 14:12

Be with the man who loves you not the man you love. Its a bad translation of an advice my mother gave me.Unlike many young girls around me (Goign for the guy who makes your knees buckle)I went for the guy who treated me right in every shape and form. And turns out it is very easy to fall in love with a person who loves you and puts you first.Almost 10 years later and couldn't be happier

Dragongirl10 · 17/11/2021 14:17

Those who never fail never do anything to begin with.

My d dad (now 86 )

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 17/11/2021 14:18

A similar vibe to what others have already posted, but 'This too shall pass"
or 'Nothing lasts forever'

It got me through the first year of my sons life with crippling sleep deprivation and PND. It works for thd good times as well!

Work hard & play hard

Pay into a private pension

Do not be financially dependent on anyone

Do things that you enjoy, try new things

Don't judge a book, by its cover (meaning people)

Be kind

Don't want to be elderly & say I wish I had done X,YZ. Do everything!

Everyone is different
