To think The Queen should retire?

ThinWomansBrain · 14/11/2021 21:09

I am not a monarchist - but given that we have a Royal Family....
Given her age, understandably failing health, and the recent widowhood, is it be reasonable to think the Queen should step down and retire gracefully?
OK, maybe stay in post until the Jubillee next year, but then hand over.

But she literally feels she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her job isn’t just smiling and shaking hands![/quote]

As far as I can see, the only weight on her shoulders is whether the taxpayer continues to subsidise her family and their excesses, and the issues surrounding Prince Andrew etc.

So, all the people convinced that they were keeping quiet her death because of Remembrance Sunday and the Glasgow conference, what do you say the reasons are now that both are well and truly over?

Obviously they’re still “putting processes into place”. takes them a day or two. Grin

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Johnson and his cabinet are not of sufficient calibre or integrity to tackle a divisive issue like this, nor do they have any incentive to do it given the size of their majority, so I can't see any reason why this should become a big political issue for many years to come.

Who knows what may happen after a few years of King Charles III, or whatever he decides to be called.

There are far more important/urgent things for the government to deal with at the moment. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I'm sure a lot of people would like to see an end to the monarchy, but are they in the majority? Even if we had a referendum, would there be a clear decision one way or another, or would it be another fiasco like the Brexit vote? Does the average Joe Public even understand the monarchy and constitution enough to be trusted to vote or will a lot of people just vote according to whatever z list sleb posts on Twitter?

Voord · 16/11/2021 13:47

I think that her retirement from public duties will probably happen in the very near future, like when Prince Phillip did the same. She’ll remain Queen and might do the odd important event if fit (e.g. Remembrance Sunday) but otherwise the younger ones take over.

HarrisonStickle · 16/11/2021 15:48

That's what's starting to be reported in the media. Albeit just resting for the winter, but I think it'll be permanent.

How do you know what she 'literally' feels? I honestly doubt she literally feels that she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Maybe the UK. But even then, since she is politically neutral her job is simply smiling and shaking hands.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 16/11/2021 17:37

I’m friends with key members of the royal family of another country - I’m assuming she feels the same way they do given that she thinks she was put on the earth to rule the UK by god and so is responsible for everyone in the country and the country itself. Just because she doesn’t make rules doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel responsibility 🤷🏻‍♀️

She doesn't rule, she reigns. The government rules.
ilovesooty · 16/11/2021 17:55

Edward VIII was actually called Edward. He was known as David within the family. He had about 7 first names and David was the last of them.

StoneofDestiny · 16/11/2021 17:58

Her death will cause huge changes in everyone’s lives

Her death won't make a blind bit of difference, anymore than Philips death has, Diana's death has or the disappearance of Andrew from public life has.
Nothing in my routine has changed, my life hasn't altered one bit.
I think the overwhelming majority of people will be doing exactly the same thing after her death than they are now.

StoneofDestiny · 16/11/2021 18:08

But she literally feels she has the weight of the world on her shoulders

😂😂
The Queen is a member of a family who do not have to worry about employment for themselves or their children, having jobs for life secured. They don't worry about the rising price of food, transport, gas, electricity or clothes. They don't worry about the decoration or repair of their many homes, the price of cars, the length of the queue in a supermarket or at the airport. Even the washing, vacuuming, polishing and ironing is done by others - and millions of people chip in from their hard earned wages to ensure they can continue to live in the luxury they expect. The price of funerals and weddings is taken care of for them as is their security. Nothing but the best is available to them in childcare, medical care and education.
The only thing the Queen is likely to worry about is the appalling behaviour of her own children.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 16/11/2021 18:18

@StoneofDestiny

I’m
Not disagreeing with you but I’m telling you more how I think she sees it, not how I see it. Can’t you see from her point of view? The responsibilities she thinks she has?

CounsellorTroi · 16/11/2021 18:23

What responsibilities? I genuinely don't get it. I get that her job is physically onerous at her age, but not that she is weighed down by responsibilities.

Couldn't agree more!

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 16/11/2021 18:27

I don’t think she sees it that way! I think she thinks she is responsible for the UK and the commonwealth etc. Its “her” country.

StoneofDestiny · 16/11/2021 18:32

@justtheretoaskaquestion91

No - she carry's no responsibility and I do not believe she thinks she does either. In fact, none of them have a clue about the drudge of working just to pay bills, the fear of losing your job or the stress of losing it. They have struggled for nothing, earned nothing on their own merits and are pampered and bowed to all their lives. If she thinks she is weighted down by responsibilities it's very insulting to those who genuinely are.

Prince Edward represented her at the General Synod today - it's the first time the Queen has missed it.

Interesting that it is him, for he is not a Counsellor of State, but is one of the Magnificent Seven.

The situation re Counsellors of State is a bit of a mess, Harry could be suspended from the role whilst domiciled abroad (and there is provision for that) and someone needs to come up with a cunning plan to remove Andrew (perhaps he could just stand down). But of course then the replacements have to be the next two adults in the line of succession, which means Beatrice and Eugenie. Even though it wouid make far more sense to have Edward and Anne

amylou8 · 16/11/2021 19:23

Why should she. She's given the best part of her life to this country. If she wants to die as Queen then that's her prerogative. If she's not up to public duties she has plenty of family who can stand in for her.

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/11/2021 19:27

She will never abdicate but I think she is nearing the end of her life. I hope she makes her jubilee next year, what an achievement that is.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 16/11/2021 20:31

YANBU, she should have been faded out years ago like they've done in the other European monarchies with a minimum of self-awareness, but it's too late now. QE obviously preferred the Saudi model: keep milking them dry right to the bitter end.

To be fair though, she does have a pair of spectacular bellends as sons, so may have felt less damage would be done overall by staying put.

Anyway, not long now before we can all cringe along to God Save The King Smile

Ah - I think there are some unkind comments here .
Of course people can be anti royalist or republican - of course

But I truly believe that woman decided this was her role and she was going to do it.
Of course she is rich but would you really want to be having to get up and do jobs well beyond retirement age when if you were a well off country woman you could tootle around with your dogs and your horses

I can see the point of a constitutional monarchy - the problem I see is the Queen has provided so much continuity & I hope her son & grandson can properly step into her shoes & do a decent job for the country.

This family was never doing to be poor but they do have to do a job for what they have ( & retirement not a real option at the moment ) Personally I'd rather take the money and run - but they don't ( well most of them Grin )

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 16/11/2021 21:04

This family was never doing to be poor Not according to the RF... remember the one about Philip whining to the Americans about having to give up polo?

Personally I'd rather take the money and run - but they don't

Um. That's basically all they do. Offshore accounts coming out of their ears.

EdithWeston · 16/11/2021 21:16

YY - I can't quite imagine here as HRH Duchess of Somewhere

(No, she wouldn't be Queen Mother, because that's an alternate title for Dowager Queen and only available to widowed Queens Consort)

notanothertakeaway · 16/11/2021 21:46

I like the queen. She's been around all my life, in the background. I like that she takes her role seriously and isn't brought down by allegations of sleaze / impropriety

Not such a fan of the rest, content to wait and see, I think Charles will trim back considerably
