To think The Queen should retire?

411 replies

ThinWomansBrain · 14/11/2021 21:09

I am not a monarchist - but given that we have a Royal Family....
Given her age, understandably failing health, and the recent widowhood, is it be reasonable to think the Queen should step down and retire gracefully?
OK, maybe stay in post until the Jubillee next year, but then hand over.

Most people really don't care about the Royal Family as they have absolutely zero impact on their lives whatsoever

I can only imagine that you are not looking much further than your own social circle. The Royals are incredibly popular...and even people who say they dislike them add a caveat that they like and respect the Queen.

I don't think she could hand it over as such - there isn't any precedent for that really, although I'm no expert. But she should absolutely be able to hand over all her duties to other members of the RF. There are enough of them and it would give them something purposeful to do. So yanbu

It's called abdication. reigning monach retires and next in line is annointed.

Are you not from the UK?*

Loving the sniffiness of your last sentence 😄

I am half American but I so live here. What I'm suggesting (albeit badly phrased perhaps!) is that the queen has someone to stand in for her at her official duties while she does the crossword or potters in the garden or whatever else she does. I know she likes to work like a Trojan, though, so she probably wouldn't countenance anything so wet as 'resting'.

However, if I was Charles or any of the rest of them, I'd be mortified that my nonogenerian (sp?) relative worked harder than I do. Maybe that's just my American foreignness talking.

She won't. She made a solemn promise to the country in front of God which is central to her faith and duty.

2bazookas · 15/11/2021 14:26
@counsellortroi the only thing I can imagine is that she has had a far heavier workload and higher amount of stress than her mother ever did.
Of course ! Because her mother was just a royal consort . She never ruled , never held the role of Head of State.
Totally different jobs.

When the Queen's father died, the Queen mother's role as his consort ended, she was redundant.

No, not especially.

I don't see the Royal Family as an entity that has any real impact on my life. Will it be sad that a 95 year old lady passed away? Sure, but I don't understand the whole "national mourning" malarkey that seems to spring up on these threads.

I'm sure the Queen is a lovely lady but her day-to-day impact on most people is next to nothing.

I suppose I just don't understand why anyone would cry or mourn the death of someone they've never met and who has had zero real impact on their lives.

I'll be more upset when David Attenborough dies - at least he's achieved something Wink

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 15/11/2021 15:56

Lol at people who think no one will care when she dies. Look at the fucking mental reaction when Diana died?!

3luckystars · 15/11/2021 16:05

She will be a huge loss to the whole world. You will only realise how absolutely incredible she was, when she is gone. Even the Irish love her and that is nothing short of a miracle.
Hopefully she will do the 100 though!

LizzieW1969 · 15/11/2021 16:30

@Justheretoaskaquestion91

What they really mean is that they themselves won’t care when the Queen dies, and they can’t imagine anyone feeling differently about it.

As for me, I can’t imagine being upset about it, particularly as she’s 95 and will obviously die at some point in the next few years, but it really will be the end of an era, as she’s always been there and I’ve always had respect for her.

To answer the question posed by the OP, she won’t abdicate

LizzieW1969 · 15/11/2021 16:31

Posted too soon. She won’t abdicate, as she sees it as her duty to remain Queen until the day of her death.

TheOriginalEmu · 15/11/2021 16:36

Absolutely laughing at removing my post, are we not allowed to mention the dodgy proclivities of people just because they are royals now?

The sooner the entire system is abolished the better. I’m very anti-royal, but I didnt really think much either way of liz, it wasn’t her personally I disliked but the institution. However the lack of any accountability for Andrew’s actions is sickening.

That was embarrassing. But people really did love Diana and her death was very unexpected. Times have changed a lot since then, and i don’t think it’ll be as insane.
Brainwave89 · 15/11/2021 16:47

Love the Queen and will be very sad indeed when she passes. A life of service in my view that will not be repeated. I think she will remain Queen now until the end, and this has to be her call. No one would argue if she retired... but she won't.

icedcoffees · 15/11/2021 16:51

I don't think anyone on here has said "nobody will care when the Queen dies".

What I (and others) have said, is that the Queen herself has no impact on our day-to-day lives and that, as a result, we won't be upset about her passing.

The Diana reaction was, IMO, just mass hysteria and I suspect the same thing will happen when the Queen goes. But a lot of that won't be genuine upset, it will be people following the crowds and wanting to say they were "there".

LittleDandelionClock · 15/11/2021 16:52

@Justheretoaskaquestion91

The comments re speculation over the death of a 95 year old are ridiculous. This isn’t great Granny Susan from across the road; it’s the Queen! Her death will cause huge changes in everyone’s lives. Of course it’s reasonable to speculate about it. It’s not like everyone is rubbing their hands together! I am a massive royalist and I agree with *@DuchessOfDisaster* , I do think there’s a chance she has died. We won’t find out immediately; I read somewhere it will be days before we do due to the enormous amounts of planning that go into the aftermath.
Agree with this post. Although I do disagree that The Queen is already dead... (I hope not anyway!)
LittleDandelionClock · 15/11/2021 16:54

@Comedycook

It'll only impact people who care about the royals though

Why would Joe or Jane Bloggs be grieving the Queen

You are very naive. The Queen is hugely popular even amongst those who aren't huge supporters of the royal family. As an individual, she is highly respected. She has been a very steadying influence in this country....always there. The public response when she dies will be unbelievable, mark my words

Exactly. The Queen is MASSIVELY loved and respected by a LOT of people. And a lot of countries. I know it doesn't suit the haters to hear this, but it's true.
LittleDandelionClock · 15/11/2021 16:58

@Gingerkittykat

Yup, because we really need an adulterer with a geography degree as our head of state.

It's time to abolish the monarchy completely.

What an ignorant and nasty remark. Have a word with yourself. Hmm

@starrynight21

A geography degree ? I'm not sure that you need a degree to be the monarch . You know that the Queen never went to school at all ? And somehow she has managed to do a sterling job for 70 years .

This. ^ And as for the 'William is an adulterer' accusations. Thee is NO proof. The anti Royalists just WANT it to be true, because they are mean-spirited haters.

@SerendipitousEmma

Did anyone else think that Charles looked really sad at the Remembrance ceremony today?

He's not going to be rolling around laughing and blowing raspberries, and making fart noises with his armpit is he? It's a remembrance service.

@HalfCakeHalfBiscuit

Yawn. Why should we get King Baldy and Queen Boring..?

What a vile and nasty comment.

FatOaf · 15/11/2021 17:09

I also heard (doubt if true) but that Charles wouldn’t use the name Charles to avoid linking with the previous King Charleses.

There's no particular reason why he should be King Charles.

As you said, George VI's name was Albert. Edward VIII's name was David. Edward VII's name was Albert.

He could choose to be Charles III, Philip, Arthur or George VII. I don't think even he is sufficiently deluded to call himself King Arthur, though.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 15/11/2021 17:11

I would it if he called himself King Arthur! Grin just for the joy of the public reaction.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 15/11/2021 17:12

That should say “I would love it”

icedcoffees · 15/11/2021 17:23

I'm not a hater at all, In all honesty, I have no real feelings on the Royals either way as they have pretty much zero impact on my life.

I just don't understand why so many people are going to be upset about a total stranger dying of old age.

KeflavikAirport · 15/11/2021 17:27

The "anointed sovereign" bollocks is a bit rich considering she wasn't going to be queen until her uncle decided to abdicate. All part of God's plan for Wallis Simpson to get a divorce, was it?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/11/2021 18:07

I'm an atheist so have no truck with the anointed by God stuff but it's not the oddest way the monarchy has ended up passing to an unexpected person. I don't expect anybody thought Queen Victoria would ever ascend the throne, given that her father had two older brothers and both had many children (illegitimate, so couldn't succeed, but it's odd they didn't manage to produce any legitimate heirs). In any event, if Edward had been allowed to marry Mrs Simpson, they would almost certainly have had no children, so on his death he would have been succeeded directly by his niece, assuming his brother had still died in 1952.

Ellmau · 15/11/2021 18:14

The anointment takes place as part of the coronation ceremony.

Well I just don't understand why people would NOT be upset. But we are all different. For some reason though, the Royal haters seem to be massively bothered that many people love the Royals and will be upset when The Queen dies. I am not bothered if people don't like the Royals. And I doubt any other Royalists care either. Yet the Royal haters seem so irked that others love them, and issue all kinds of insults and nasty comments about the Royals. It's pathetic and childish and attention-seeking. (Not aimed you btw)

Also, The Queen is not 'a stranger.' Not to many MANY people.
