Women in 'men's' jobs

WhiteVanWoman91 · 13/11/2021 18:05

Leading on from the thread about why trade/construction jobs aren't more widely considered outside of the working class, I feel the same way that they're never really something us females are ever told much about.

WC lads often do pretty shit at school, but then end up ok after finding a trade. Maybe not earning £100k bigshot money but £40k+. However, I feel wc class women often end up in shit retail jobs or serving coffee etc.

I'm a female trucker in the construction industry, getting all my qualifications for site management etc. Trying to decide whether I'd rather be in transport or site management. But right now I love my job and earn circa £40k in an environment I Iike. Hate offices tbh.

I think despite people saying that male dominated sectors are hostile to women, I reckon many wc women would feel less intimidated in the sort of environment I work in than in a corporate office. They'd be working with the kind of guys they're married to, grew up with, and less likely to feel looked down on - people tend to be pretty snobby in this country even if most people claim to value 'diversity'.

I feel like a lot of women moan about 'not enough women in xyz sector' but not many want to lead by example. Will post some pics of some of the women I find inspirational as they seem to be pretty much ignored despite all the talk of male dominated this and that.

If manual handling rules mean any woman doesn't do the heavy work then she's not going to be popular is she! I mean. On a small site etc. And not working for a company. Who's going to hire her?

Manual handling rules mean nobody is doing heavy work. Anything over a certain weight needs to be mechanically lifted or needs to be a two person lift.

Roofers don’t lug roof tiles up as it is unsafe for anyone to be doing it.

CheeseMmmm · 13/11/2021 21:45

I never understand these posts.

I always think there's a subtext of. Women are happy for men to do the 'dirty work' and thats out of order.

This comes up a lot on feminist threads. Usually mining is cited as a horrible job that women swerved.

The fact that women did go down the mines until they were banned from doing so because it meant they lacked morals and it wasn't feminine...

Meh.

Whole thing should be all individuals can and should do any job according to interests skills and ability. Rather than women constantly being asked why they don't work on bin round/ roofing etc.

From a teaching perspective I have often noted how the boys who are less interested in A levels/Uni have a huge variety of future careers they may express an interest in, and often it is the case that if they were to be even moderately successful in them, they would earn well. The girls disproprtionately show an interest in hair/beauty/childcare which is not linked to flexibility, 15 year olds don't consider flexibility.

CheeseMmmm · 13/11/2021 21:46

Also I've never met a male office worker who would want to be in the trades either.

EBearhug · 13/11/2021 21:53

there's lots of these diversity etc programs floating around (sorry OP not quite relevant to your post). They all seem to miss the point spectacularly though

Because they don't include the bulk of the men who make up the workforce and therefore mould the working culture. Those few of us women get told all the stats and the barriers, and the rest of them are left thinking that women just choose to do other things, and as long as they're not groping anyone behind the bogs or anywhere, then they aren't part of the problem so don't need to change or even think about it.

@Namechangeforthis88

Primary school got a female caretaker and she made the male caretakers look like a pair of utter clowns. Why not more female caretakers?
Because they make the males look like clowns...
MaryLennoxsScowl · 13/11/2021 22:18

True but many wc women are in jobs where they interact with these men all day already. Like women working in cafs or the women in transport office at work.

Are you crazy? They are not at all comparable. The women in the cafs or offices are not competing with the men or stepping outside their usual roles or trying to change the regulations/facilities to make things more equal.

Just as an aside, whenever I’ve heard women say that women are harder to work with due to bitchy behaviour, I have without exception found the woman who thinks this to be the worst person to work with.

Agree.

Ha true.

I worked for a charity that was maybe 40 women. 1 man. Zero issues with 'bitchiness'.

Some teams are awful some shit. Usually to do with one or two horrible people. The way the horribleness manifests does differ by sex probably. But it's just as bad whichever.

But there must be something more to it. They surveyed 500,000 women and the unanimous verdict was that they’d rather have a male boss.

Not posts on this thread. Threads on Feminism. Sorry if that wasn't clear!

Got s link to the survey? That's interesting. Was it because of bitchiness? Really like to read!

Women dislike having a female boss at work even more than men do, a new study has revealed.

Nearly 40 per cent of female workers in America would rather be led by a man, a Gallup survey found.

In contrast, just 26 per cent of men would prefer a male boss.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2797279/women-dislike-having-female-boss-workplace-men-study-finds.html

CBS Local — A survey by MSN found that both men and women prefer to work with men rather than women in the workplace. The survey is believed to be as accurate as a scientific poll. Nearly 500,000 people supplied answers.

MSN found that 20 percent of men and 21 percent of women preferred to work with men, compared to just 6 percent of each men and women preferring to work with women.

www.cbslocal.com/2017/08/04/men-women-work-study/amp/

A study found two women are less likely to cooperate than two men when one is more powerful than the other.

Similarly, two females of different rank are less likely to work together than a man and a woman.

The finding contradicts the widely held belief that women’s nurturing nature makes it natural for them to help each other out, while men are too competitive to have time for each other.

Harvard University researcher Joyce Benenson, one of the study’s authors, said that women’s instinctive distrust of females in power may make it more difficult for them to scale the career ladder.

Thanks I will!

This in the extract made me roll my eyes though!

'The finding contradicts the widely held belief that women’s nurturing nature makes it natural for them to help each other out, while men are too competitive to have time for each other'

!!!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 13/11/2021 22:45

Both my sisters used to say they’d rather work fir a man and I always challenged them on it. It was quite obvious as we talked about it repeatedly that they held their male & female bosses to different standards of behaviour tolerating far higher levels of fuckwittery from male bosses and working far harder to keep their male boss happy as they were more demanding

As they’ve got older they’ve shifted entirely & now both prefer to work for women

WhiteVanWoman91 · 13/11/2021 22:45

Yes, it seems a bit anecdotal a statement to attach to a study. I’m just reading the thread again and have to say I’m loling a bit that a thread about women being bitchy descends into petty arguing and bitchiness. 🤣🤣🤣

OP posts:
CheeseMmmm · 13/11/2021 22:46

Interesting!

The headline doesn't reflect the text is unsurprising! Clickbait eh nothing like it!

I have so many questions about that but not got time to read original study, so so many questions!

I did like this bit-

'‘The conventional wisdom is that women co-operate more easily but when you look at how armies or sports teams function, there is evidence that men are better at co-operating in some ways.’ '

CheeseMmmm · 13/11/2021 22:47

Who is being bitchy?

Oh and

Have you read any male dominated forums 😂😂😂😂

CheeseMmmm · 13/11/2021 22:47

They go for pedantic one upmanship an awful lot of the time Grin

WhiteVanWoman91 · 13/11/2021 22:48

The OP actually makes a mistake in opening post of that thread.

Says ’However, I was surprised to read in a recent thread on here that the majority of women prefer female bosses’.

She means male bosses.
