To ask what we vote for now? (Anti Tory thread)

Imposter1 · 12/11/2021 08:57

I have voted Tory in the past. It was more lack of sensible other options. They seemed the best of a bad bunch.

I will never vote for them again though. The nail in the coffin for me was MP admitting that life was a struggle on £82k. And he “had childcare to pay for” so needed 2nd jobs beyond being an MP. They have been slowly pissing me off for years and it’s just tipped over for me.

I’m done. But what else is there? I’m not sure where I fit in.

Things that are important to me are:
-women’s rights (I’m not a fan of the current narrative of deleting women… e.g. “pregnant people”, allowing trans people into women’s prisons etc)

  • women’s safety
  • childcare- making it more affordable and easier for women to return to work after kids
  • bring back family centres that were closed down
  • giving adequate funding to NHS, police, education (and proper front line funding, not a bunch of made up jobs that pay ridiculous amounts for being a “manager”)
  • someone who cares about the environment and doesn’t just make promises that never come true

Is there actually a party that would suit me?

I would say women and children are at the top of my importance list. Because I think they have had a crap deal in recent years

Assume that some parties will be out for me because some of them don’t care for women

Then, unless you have a candidate from the Communist Party or you live in Scotland or Wales, your only choices are to vote Tory again or spoil your ballot paper. All of the others are pro self ID. The only reason the tories aren’t are because Boris gives even less of a shit about upsetting TRAs than he does women.

Sign up to Vote for Policies and they'll email you when they refresh the survey. Basically you pick statements about different issues and at the end it tells you which parties you're most closely aligned with. Between that and whoever is most likely to oust Tory's in your area (assuming survey doesn't surprise you and say you actually 100% support the Tory manifesto) it should help you find a clear way to vote

In a similar boat, we need new parties, lots of them - that is just what we do NOT need!

The reason why we have this dishonest shower in charge is because the first-past-the-post system splits the opposition so many ways that an MP can be elected, even when he/she have had more people vote against them than for them.

Until we have a fairer voting system, the fewer parties we have the better.

We need a clear opposition party that people can get behind in order to get rid of these creeps.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 12/11/2021 13:44

@Imposter1

The issue is there is no real alternative… it is dumb and dumber!

I would never vote for any party that wants to delete women and put the rights of trans people ahead of my own. I do not want to live in a world where we give out chest binders to young girls and paint The road crossings in trans flag colours (even though it makes it hard for guidedogs to see and puts blind people in danger).

I would say women and children are at the top of my importance list. Because I think they have had a crap deal in recent years.

Assume that some parties will be out for me because some of them don’t care for women.

This looks like you making excuses for voting Tory again because even though they are terrible, none of the others fits your requirements.
Imposter1 · 12/11/2021 13:49

No I’m not making excuses. I don’t want the country to end up even worse under another party.

I can vote for who the hell I want to… I don’t need an “excuse” 😂

Just trying to do my best to make things better

Everyone's attacking OP for voting Tory but nobody's suggesting a better alternative - which is exactly what she's asking for on this thread...

SexyNeckbeard · 12/11/2021 13:59

You're not doing anything to make things better though. If you don't like the parties why don't you get involved with politics instead of whining about it? Join a party, start campaigning for change, use your party vote to improve things in your chosen party.

Easier to just moan though isn't it? If you hate the tories that much DO something about it

senua · 12/11/2021 14:02

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

why not join this

www.womensequality.org.uk/

Then you can stand against the Tory in your seat.

"The Women’s Equality Party is a new collaborative force in British politics uniting people of all genders, ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, beliefs and experiences in the shared determination to see women enjoy the same rights and opportunities as men - so that all can flourish."

The WEP believe in gender, not biological sex. They only had one job...

@Gingernaut

The Communist Party recognises women as an oppressed class.
I bet they aren't standing in a safe Tory seat.
Mischance · 12/11/2021 14:14

Hell no - do NOT do this. The more small parties that stand the more likely the Tories are to get in again.

Let me explain...........

Here is a Tory candidate who has lots of financial backing and is a shoe-in to win in a constituency. How can you keep him/her out? By having just ONE alternative on your voting paper. If you have a whole list of other tiny party candidates then the opposition to the Tory will be split - this means the Tory will get in. If you tot up all the small party votes they might come to more than the Tory received - but the Tory will still be elected. This is because the opposition is split.

Do not go down this route - this is why we are in the current mess. Research which of the local opposition parties is most likely to attract the biggest vote and vote for them - whatever their label. And you could go even further - you could lobby these non-Tory parties to field one joint candidate - it is hard - they are all hoping for power.

In my constituency, the situation is just like that. If I vote for the Tory, then the Tory will get in. If I vote for one of the many opposition parties (small and large) that are standing, then the Tory will still get in. I am on a hiding to nothing.

Until the voting system is made fair (or the smaller parties agree to stand back in favour of the most likely opposition party to win) , then we are stuck with this crew for the foreseeable future.

No more parties please.

Bideshi · 12/11/2021 14:28

Politicians go to Oxford. Media folk go to Cambridge. Generalising but just saying.
You know the Anarchist cry ‘Don’t vote. The government will get in anyway.’ I do feel that women should honour the struggle though.
Spoilt paper next time with longish screed. They have to read them. The trick is not to sound unhinged.

You need an excuse for claiming not to want to vote Tory for then voting for the fuckers - that's just ridiculous.
Imposter1 · 12/11/2021 14:45

Perhaps you are not understanding daim. There has not been a subsequent election yet. I’m talking about the future.

Your attitude stinks. It’s like a dr telling a patient that their broken leg was their own stupid fault because they went ice skating. Telling them never to go ice skating again and refusing To show any compassion or treat them ever again because one time they were stupid enough to break a leg ice skating 😂

No idea what it's got to do with ice skating and medics but yours seems to be

"the only place to go ice skating is a rink where the owners break your leg with a baseball bat. I don't like it but I went there as the other ice skating place had some wallpaper I didn't like. Now I really have no idea what to do next time I want to go skating as there are no good places"

Imposter1 · 12/11/2021 15:47

Hmmm I think labours issue is a bit more than “wallpaper”. More like choosing between having your legs broken or having your arms broken.

It makes me not want to go ice skating at all.

If you want the Tories out the best chance of achieving that with a sitting Tory candidate under the FPTP system is to ignore all the fringe parties in a that constituency and vote for the party best placed to unseat them. If the sitting candidate is from another party vote to give the Tory candidate the smallest chance of winning the seat.

JessieLongleg · 12/11/2021 15:53

People rarely mention the Tory assault on the disabled. Through benefits and social care. Can't believe it taken to know for people to be so disappointed in them.

tinierclanger · 12/11/2021 15:54

OP, you just need to do what has been previously mentioned - vote for the candidate most likely to oust the Tory in your seat. Most of us don’t have the luxury of choosing a party that aligns with our interests, you just have to go with the least worst option under FPTP.

tinierclanger · 12/11/2021 15:56

@lonelyapple

Not any difference between Tories or Labour these days and I would never vote for either of them.
Utter nonsense.
Malbecfan · 12/11/2021 15:59

I live in a true blue area. This week someone locally suggested that a dog turd in a blue rosette would win. I am broadly left of centre and whilst I like parts of what Labour, LD and Greens have to say, I disagree with others. We had a stunning independent candidate here, a local councillor who every year garnered more support. The incumbent Tory refused to take part in any hustings; the Independent did them all and won over lots of disenfranchised people. In the end, the huge majority was whittled down to 2k and the Ind is still holding the new MP to account. If only the people backing the Lab/LD/Green candidates had supported the Ind, they would have got in.

Other posters have nailed it. Our system stinks. FPTP is ridiculous. More people actively voted against the Tories than for them, yet they got a majority of 80 seats. We need a proper system of PR.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with Cambridge-educated people. DD is there and she is kind, thoughtful and grounded (and would be an utter disaster as a politician). She didn't go to private school, so I kind of ruined her chances anyway Grin

Rhubarbraspberryandrose · 12/11/2021 16:17

Wasn’t a vote to change the FPTP system unsuccessful?

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 12/11/2021 16:51

I say this on every thread so apologies for being boring, but unless you are a Tory and want this corrupt dictatorship to continue, there is no point voting in the UK until they change the electoral system.

People don't seem to realise how bad the problem of inaccurate representation and tactical voting actually is.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 12/11/2021 16:53
