No 2 minutes silence at gym. AIBU

I went to my gym today for a class in the swimming pool. I had totally expected the class to finish just before 11am so that those who wanted to could observe the two minutes silence. By 10.55am it was apparent that this was not going to happen so I just took myself out of the pool and sat in the changing room by myself.
So as to not drip feed, I am from a Forces Family and the wrong side of 50! I found this totally disrespectful of the instructor. He could have, at the very least, mentioned that he had intended to not stop before the class. AIBU to be upset by this?

Baluchistan, you are being very aggressive and confrontational. The antithesis of wanting to be educated. It's quite tiresome.

Baluchistan95 · 11/11/2021 21:57

@ThePoisonousMushroom

Shame on you. You represent everything that is wrong with the world today

She really, really doesn’t.

On reflection, you are of course correct. Spin classes are far more important. My god.
Patapouf · 11/11/2021 21:57

What do you feel the silence achieves that it cannot achieve at any other time of day on any other day of the year?

When public places turn off music, classes stop etc it just seems like virtue signalling. It is utterly meaningless.

If you want to stop at 11 and ponder the atrocities of war, by all means do so but you can't police other people. I regularly think what an abomination the military is and how horrendous humans can be to one another, it doesn't change a thing and wouldn't stop it from happening again it our govt decides it fancies a war.

lazylinguist · 11/11/2021 21:59

Discount posters' views as 'shameful' if you wish, but I'm not sure how you can justify this when there are people telling you that the veterans or war-bereaved people in their families have those same views. Are they shameful too?

DemBonesDemBones · 11/11/2021 22:00

@Europilgrim I'm 37 and it's been a 'thing' since I was at primary school at least Hmm

Baluchistan95 · 11/11/2021 22:01
@Baluchistan95 please tell me why I am everything that’s wrong with the world? I was at work, doing my job - it’s not the sort of job that is appropriate to stop half way through for 2 minutes - in fact, it could be potentially dangerous mid class to just stop. Would you say the same about a tube driver, or a surgeon, or a pilot? All just doing our job.

You also don’t know anything about me, or what I’m doing this weekend on actual Remembrance Sunday, so I suggest you perhaps wind your self-righteous neck in a bit.
Oh, dear. I am sorry. Your job is clearly so important that you could not stop for two minutes to reflect on the sacrifice that others made to protect our freedom. Are you seriously comparing your job to that of a surgeon? Wow.

Go to bed if you are tired. Hth.

YABU that war was 100 years ago - are we to stop and hold a silence for every atrocity?

Almostmenopausal · 11/11/2021 22:05

@Libertaire

YABU.

If you wish to observe two minutes silence, carry on. Nobody is stopping you.

Others are free to ignore such public virtue-signalling if they wish.

Virtue signalling? Remembering what were essentially CHILDREN who were forcibly sent away to fight for your freedom and never returned? FORTY MILLION young men ** brutally, traumatically & senselessly murdered so that we could walk freely. Only for 21 years after that war ended, to begin again with WW2!! When many of the mothers & family of the dead men were still alive, they had to witness it all over again. Their deaths weren't just senseless & brutal but they were seemingly in vain.... (Much like the families of the fallen servicemen in Afghanistan must feel now, God bless them)

How utterly, utterly gobsmackingly vile to call spending TWO MINUTES remembering them 103-107 years later, as 'Virtue Signalling?????' 😧😧😧

SHAME ON YOU

Baluchistan95 · 11/11/2021 22:07

Almostmenopausal - I agree. I could weep. Disgusting in the extreme.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 11/11/2021 22:08

Your reflection isn’t any more important just because you do it at a certain time. Reflection doesn’t mean any less if it’s done at 11.30am after the spin class, or indeed on Sunday at 11am, when the remembrance services are taking place.
They fought for our freedom. Freedom includes choosing when to reflect, when to be silent, when to earn a living from doing your job. Those who wanted to reflect at that exact time were free to do so.

Pinkginlover · 11/11/2021 22:10

The gym I attend observed the 2 minute silence.
The class I was in was due to start at 11am .We just started the class after the 2 minutes.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 11/11/2021 22:12

Preach!!! 🙌🙌🙌

People go on about the two minute silence and showing respect, shouldn't we be more concerned about showing respect for the vulnerable people alive right now and struggling?

Almostmenopausal · 11/11/2021 22:12

@WhenISnappedAndFarted Today's remembers me was about WW1 🤦🏼‍♀️

Willyoujustbequiet · 11/11/2021 22:13

Yanbu and I would certainly judge anyone that didn't respect it ( obviously not medical/emergency). Its 2 minutes fgs.

Everyone stopped in the hairdressers where I was.

Kevinishot · 11/11/2021 22:13

@Baluchistan95 no, I’m not comparing my actual job to that of a surgeon, merely suggesting that while people are at work, it’s not always appropriate to stop mid way through for something - whatever the job may be. And particularly in something which is optional to take part in in the first place, such as an exercise class. If people are that worried about holding a 2 minute silence, they shouldn’t be at the gym. It’s quite simple.
As I mentioned in my previous post, you don’t know what I, and all the other people who were in my class, are doing this Sunday to reflect. You don’t know what my old job was (have a guess… forces) so for you to say I’m all that’s wrong with the world is pretty bloody ignorant.

Sorry, have I understood you correctly here? Are you saying that today was about WW1, only?

They fought and died for our freedom to do what we want, including not being silent at certain times just because others say we should.

@Lubowski You are being INCREDIBLY disrespectful. This has been a part of our culture for over 100 years.
