No 2 minutes silence at gym. AIBU

I went to my gym today for a class in the swimming pool. I had totally expected the class to finish just before 11am so that those who wanted to could observe the two minutes silence. By 10.55am it was apparent that this was not going to happen so I just took myself out of the pool and sat in the changing room by myself.
So as to not drip feed, I am from a Forces Family and the wrong side of 50! I found this totally disrespectful of the instructor. He could have, at the very least, mentioned that he had intended to not stop before the class. AIBU to be upset by this?
@Baluchistan95 Don't be facetious! WW1 is where it all started and WW1 ended on.....11th November!!!!!! (1918) 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
Answer my question. Are you saying that today is about WW1 only? Simple question. If I have it wrong then I do apologise.

@Lubowski. I knew my comment would get deleted, just glad you saw it.Smile

Sparklesocks · 11/11/2021 22:23

Personally if someone disagreed with my view I’m not sure I could win them round by saying fuck you to them and aggressively telling them how wrong they are.

I did the silence but I’m not going to police/judge those who didn’t. Im not sure forcing people to do things they don’t wish too or abusing them for not doing them is quite in line with the freedoms that past soldiers have won for us after all. People might pay respects in other ways for all you know.

Almostmenopausal · 11/11/2021 22:24

@Baluchistan95 Don't order me around.

Remembrance Day has ALWAYS been to remember those who died in the 14-18 war. Their deaths were seemingly in vain as it all began again 1939.
Remembrance Sunday has always sought to make sure that those who died in the first war were never forgotten.

MeredithGreyishblue · 11/11/2021 22:24

I'd rather people did what they felt right with. LinkedIn today has been full of posts of poppies and poetry. Some of it will be genuine. Most of it will be posted in case someone notices they haven't. It's disingenuous. And posts like this, and the pp running upstairs to display a ceramic poppy all add to it. Remember because you want to. Not do that the neighbours can see your ceramic poppy.

People show respect in their own ways. I will be at a cenotaph on Sunday. Not today. Today was quiet contemplation. Sunday is for remembering together. To me, anyway.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 11/11/2021 22:24

@Almostmenopausal and? I said my Grandad fought in WW2 and his opinions. Sorry are they not valid since it was WW2 rather than WW1?

Baluchistan95 · 11/11/2021 22:24

Almostmenopausal. Apologies. Not sure how that happened. Having read back on your previous posts, it would appear that we actually agree with one another.

I never said it wasn't valid! Don't twist my words

Lubowski · 11/11/2021 22:26
@Lubowski You are being INCREDIBLY disrespectful. This has been a part of our culture for over 100 years.
And your point is?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 11/11/2021 22:26

now it seems to be "how much poppy tat can we flog in November, how red can we paint the outside of our pub, and how upset can we get if someone refuses to remember the hardest they've ever remembered and wear a giant poppy on their head to show such remembrance?"

Now I feel bad for buying my poppy brooch and pen.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 11/11/2021 22:27

@Almostmenopausal I don't get what your point is. You said to me that today was about WW1, I never said it wasn't.

Lemonsyellow · 11/11/2021 22:27

Yes, today is about World War 1 only! It’s Armistice Day. It is not Remembrance Day.

The government itself didn’t want people to stop working even for a couple of minutes on 11/11. That’s why Remembrance Day is on a Sunday.

terrywynne · 11/11/2021 22:28

@Baluchistan95 Armistice Day (otherwise known as Remembrance Day) marks the end of WW1 specifically. The date and time being when the armistice was signed and the war ended.

During WWII, it was moved to a Sunday nearest to 11th of November. That is now referred to as Remembrance Sunday and is the day when both World Wars were commemorated. In discussions immediately after the war it was decided to continue with Remembrance Sunday precisely because Armistice Day was so closely associated with WW1. Other dates for a Remembrance Day were considered and rejected.

Lubowski · 11/11/2021 22:28

@hangrylady
Yep thanks for the lols 😂

Cosmois · 11/11/2021 22:29

We never observe the silence or wear poppies. I don't really see the point tbh. Seems like a weird, old fashioned thing. I don't know anyone that observes it, I was a long time ago and the world has moved on now. There have been many conflicts over the years and eventually after a few generations people stop caring and move on. I think most of us feel like that about WW1 and WW2 now? Obviously if you want to keep up that tradition then that is good for you, but it isn't compulsory and a personal choice. Surely you don't expect people to observe this 2 minute silence until the end of time now?

Looks like I'm being educated today. I have purposely not bought a poppy because of the Iraq war, etc. Methinks it is me that needs to do my homework.
rookiemere · 11/11/2021 22:31

@TheLovelinessOfDemons I feel the same about my new poppy lanyard holder and pen that I bought from the official charity van on Saturday. I didn't strictly need either item, but it's my way of supporting the charity. Nothing seems beyond criticism by some these days.

Thanks. I'm embarrassed at my age that I didn't know that.

You can't win round idiots. I find a Fuck you is cathartic sometimes, not big or clever I grant you.

Techbically today is Remembrance Day (or Armistice Day) but it is not Remembrance Sunday. It is easy to see why the two get confused

Quite

There needs to be a time when it's not seen to be 'compulsory'

If people want to mark it , that's fine. If people don't want to mark it - also fine.

closedown · 11/11/2021 22:37

Clearly there is a period after which such major events are lost from the collective memory. Right now we're in a transition period, where pretty much everyone who experienced them has died, but their children and grandchildren live on. I'm guessing it's not unusual for there to be some conflict during these transition period, as evidenced by this thread, where some people still feel more strongly about it while others feel little connection to something in the now quite distant past.

MeredithGreyishblue · 11/11/2021 22:38

I've no problem with buying the stuff. Buy the stuff where the money goes to help people. I buy some bits when I get my poppy every year.

I've got less patience for buying the stuff when being festooned in poppy detritus means you're visibly more "respectful" than the person next to you wearing a simple poppy. That's virtue signalling.
