To think Jeremy Clarkson needs a smacked bottom

TracyLords · 09/11/2021 20:54

He’s online whingeing that Greta needs a smacked bottom; probably as she is a young woman who has a different viewpoint from him, and isn’t afraid of being loud about it.

Aibu to think that he is the one who needs a smacked bottom instead

Was going to say he's got a face like one but see I've been beaten to it!

londonmummy1966 · 10/11/2021 11:28

I'd quite like to see the pair of them shut up together in a Satre inspired hell......

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 10/11/2021 11:33

@Fomomofo

They can't help being white, middle aged and male but they sure as hell can help expressing the privilege and arrogance that often goes with it
Yeah - probably safer to ban middle aged white men from any communication that isn't simply transactional.

I wouldn't miss either of them either, for what that's worth.

I cannot understand why Clarkson is apparently so popular - but I have a nagging doubt about all the people delighting in the hatred of middle class white men too.

What said is stupid but if no-one even mentioned it, he'd go away, surely?

stingofthebutterfly · 10/11/2021 11:44

Greta is just a puppet and has been particularly foul-mouthed recently. I can fully understand Jeremy's point of view. Sure, he's not perfect, but Greta is a heck of a lot more irritating.

DickMabutt73962 · 10/11/2021 11:48

@Theyellowflamingo

Can’t stand either of them - both obnoxious and annoying, just in very different ways.
Fair.

Which is weird, given that she's been around much less time than he has, has a worthy cause even of not everyone likes her approach about it, and hasn't ever given anyone a bloody lip while insulting their heritage because she couldn't order hot food.

Why is that? What's the difference between them?

Moonmelodies · 10/11/2021 11:53

"1. There is no such thing as racism against white people."

Not even against the millions of them that ended up in gas chambers because of their race?

00100001 · 10/11/2021 11:58

Why can't anyone who is "anti Greta" come up with any actual reason they are??? Confused

I'm genuinely confused.

It's like me saying "I hate the Queen... for reasons" and explaining it by going "I just hate her"

Valeriane · 10/11/2021 11:59

I don't see Greta as any less privileged than JC.

Early on when I heard she was taking one day off a week at school to 'protest' climate change I rolled my eyes and knew she wasn't for me, not when so many girls would die (and have been nearly assassinated) for the opportunity to go to school.

That's privilege.

DrSbaitso · 10/11/2021 12:05

Do you think workers shouldn't be able to strike because of the unemployment and poverty in other parts of the world?

Schoolgirls have very few things they can use as leverage to drive change, as you would know if you're so concerned about them.

RuggerHug · 10/11/2021 12:07

It got attention which was the point. What do you think she should have done or more importantly, what have you done?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/11/2021 12:41

@Mum2jenny

I like Jeremy and fully agree that Greta is a spoilt brat, and if she’d been disciplined years ago, she’d be a better person.

It’s all about the ‘media’ and her profile. I absolutely loathe her and she’s really put me off agreeing with any of the climate change objectives.

Having now read all your comments on this thread (and I assume that by 'discipline' you are talking about hitting) I'm even more glad we don't use physical abuse as punishment. I'd be delighted if my DS grew up to be like Greta - and really quite despondent if he grew up to be like you.
derxa · 10/11/2021 12:50

I agree with GT when she says COP26 is blah blah blah. What else does she actually say?
Love JC

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/11/2021 15:04

I am not anti-Greta - I think she is doing a good job of publicising the problems of climate change and global warming - but I do think it is easy to criticise and lecture people when you’ve never had the adult responsibilities of juggling home, work, family and eco-issues. There are only so many hours in the day, and people have to decide what their priorities are, when they are deciding how to spend their money, energy and time.

It feels to me as if Greta thinks if you aren’t doing absolutely everything you can, and making the fight against climate change your No1 priority all of the time, then you are doing nothing worthwhile whatsoever. Most of us don’t have the time, energy or money to be perfectly eco-friendly all of the time - so surely it is better that people do what they can, to help the planet? If we all make small changes, that is better than nothing, and as those changes become part of our routine, we can and should add in other changes.

My worry is that people will think “I can’t do all the things I should be doing” and this will discourage them from doing what they could do - we should be encouraging every marginal gain in the battle against climate change.

There is a part of me that resents being hectored by a teenager who has never had to juggle adult responsibilities, run a house, deal with children or hold down a job.

Goldenbear · 10/11/2021 15:32

But in a way we don't really have time on our side for small or even proportionate changes we need a huge shift in our habits and our values. The systems we have valued so the industrial revolution cannot be married with the outlook we need to save the human race. I get what you are saying and I have to balance those things, fail at most green objectives I set myself but just because it is difficult, it doesn't mean we can ignore it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/11/2021 15:35

I agree - we definitely can’t ignore it, but we can’t risk discouraging people from doing what they can manage, because they can’t achieve perfection. Something is better than nothing.

Yayaga · 10/11/2021 16:38

GT talks a lot of sense and has done masses to build awareness.

But clearly she is coming from a place of immense privilege. She is a middle class white woman who has never had to work a day of her life, in fact who has never had to do anything other than focus all her efforts on her special interest. That's privilege crystallised.

She comes not just from one of the richest countries in the world, but from one of the planets richest cities.

GT lecturing people about climate change is like me, as a city born person who has never lived outside a big city, lecturing people on the evils of cars. It's a bit easy for me to take that stance. I have friends who live in the countryside and they have two trains a day on a saturday. They need their cars.

It would be like somebody who basically just never really liked the taste of meat, using that fact as a platform to promote veganism. It's like a person without a sweet tooth making a big deal out of giving up chocolate for lent.

GT would have had more impact as an older working woman who had made a radical lifestyle change or sacrifices, resonating with everyday people and inspiring people to revolutionise their lives
As it is, her young age meant she was visually interesting from a media perspective: young face, small, pigtails, anorak. It's an easy, cinematic shorthand.

I'm not saying GT shouldn't be listened to. Just explaining why I think people have a knee jerk reaction against her.

They're not comparable situations.

Striking for better work conditions is completely appropriate and directly related. Refusing to go into work once a week protest climate change will get you fired.

SweetPetrichor · 10/11/2021 19:24

I hate Clarkson, but equally, Greta’s an uppity little nyaff.
