The only way politicians will take real action on climate change is if the people demand it (and are accepting of the financial hit). The only way enough people will demand action is to raise awareness and get people to really take notice of how serious this is. I really can't think of many people who have raised more awareness or engaged more people in the climate crisis than Greta. It's quite phenomenal really for such a young woman. I get that she's not everyone's cup of tea, but to suggest that she isn't having an impact or helping the cause is bizarre.

I think the question is not so much an impact, but one with some substance.

Her main effect is to make people feel good about caring and being seen to support her, and acting as a prop for politicians, or a distraction from the difficulties of real environmental action, which are quite significant.

The environmental movement for some time has been more style than substance, avoiding addressing the well known problems of collective action, restructuring the economy, and radical lifestyle change. It's not just a financial hit - no one is really sure how to make the required adjustments without collapsing the global economy.

Screaming at people that they are screwing over the young because they can't be bothered, and trying to claim the young are environmentally on the ball while older people aren't, is a sideshow, and it's divisive to boot.

Don't hold with smacking bottoms of people I don't know. And I'm not a white, middle aged man. But Greta is very irritating.

I agree with @LobsterNapkin. I think the way she has helped raise awareness and urgency with the public is very applaudable, she is however lacking somewhat - from what I’ve seen at least - in progressing further than this one trick pony ‘Greta show’. I do on a personal level find her incredibly irritating and sanctimonious. Jeremy, I see why he is so divisive and people don’t like him, but I like him more than Greta, even though I don’t always agree with his views - or what he says are his views on tv. And for those saying no one is pulling Greta’s strings; there absolutely is and her speaker profile is not a happy accident.
