How often do you deep clean your house all the way through?

Firstly, AIBU to be totally fed up of cleaning?!
My house is not a tip (I don't think!) but I have just spent 2 whole days cleaning it from top to bottom and it's still not finished. Twice a year I usually deep clean all the way through- things such as touch up paint, clean rugs/sofa/carpet with a professional carpet cleaner, scrub the whites around the windows, pull beds/furniture out and clean behind. I also spent at least an hour cleaning every day without the bigger jobs such as changing beds, cleaning blinds/windows etc. It honestly feels like a complete never ending task. Me and DH have been cleaning for the last two days in preparation for Christmas (last bit of annual leave before we put our tree up). I really wish I had a cleaner.

I wouldnt consider touching up paint as part of deep cleaning thats part of annual DIY jobs.

I'm a minimalist so don't have much stuff so I can easily deep clean my 3bed house in 2hrs including vacuum all rooms, mop, clean windows internally, bathroom, downstairs loo and kitchen.

My beds are off the floor so quick to push vacuum underneath it to pick up any dust.

Run vacuum over tops of wardrobes too.

During the week I clean as I go eap kitchen and when I'm in meetings I dont have to write notes for I clean surfaces or drawers whilst I'm listening.

ShinyHappyPoster · 09/11/2021 22:03

Are you cleaning for an hour or tidying? I don't see how it can take an hour to clean each day when there's only three of you.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/11/2021 22:03

I mean, our house is spotless clean at all times. But I hate cleaning. I don’t enjoy it. And it’s not about pride...”house proud” or anything.

It’s because myself and two of my DC have really bad asthma. We have common triggers of house dust, mould spores and perfumes (and then we have other separate triggers like pets, exercise, etc)

So, I don’t have a choice. I cant let dust accumulate anywhere...

Dindundundundeeer · 09/11/2021 22:03

I have:
A robot hoover that does ground and first floor
A robot mop that does the entire ground floor.
A cleaner 4 hours a week

One of us wipes the kitchen down after I cook

I notice my skirting board is dusty and hope someone will notice.

I doubt I’d ever deep clean unless I move.

Beachbabe1 · 09/11/2021 22:05

Twice a year...just before Xmas and just before summer!

Housepartyatjustinshouse · 09/11/2021 22:06

I still don’t really get what deep cleaning means? When I clean, I clean everything 🤷🏻‍♀️So bedrooms polished, hoovered, mopped, bathroom and toilet cleaned, hoovered & mopped etc etc

2me2u2u2me · 09/11/2021 22:06

God this post makes me feel sooooo much better than I did. I never do a deep clean, unless somewhere needs it, which is barely ever. I spend a couple of hours Friday afternoon blitzing the house and changing beds, then a quick mop/ hoover round / wipe down toilets through the week, which takes 5 mins.

Life’s too short.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 09/11/2021 22:09

3 times a year. Spring, Autumn (after 6 weeks holidays) and Christmas.

Chewbecca · 09/11/2021 22:15

Never.
Have a cleaner but she doesn't deep clean either.
Random spots are deep cleaned on random occasions if I feel the urge but it's rare.

I don't even understand how making the bed is a thing if use a duvet. You just put the duvet on the bed. It's not like the time of multiple sheets and blankets.

Straightening the bottom sheet, fluffing the pillows and the duvet then folding it back to let the bed air. Keeps the bedding nicer and fresher for longer. If I don’t do this every day, I struggle to get to the end of the week bedding change.

@dotsandco

I used to live in military quarters, so every time I marched out of a property it was cleaned to within a millimetre of its life!!! 🤣😱🤦‍♀️

Nowadays, back on civvie street, I'm much more relaxed and live like a slattern 🤣

I go cold even reading this, march outs were such a pain and we were there when they supplied everything so a frying pan you've used for a few years had to look pristine. I recall a block of flats that was due to be refurbished, everything including windows, but the families were told that march out standards still applied, including crystal clear windows!

Touched up paint often looks worse than the marks it's supposed to cover as the colour rarely matches.

Daily: dishwasher, washing machine, tumbler and sort; cook dinner wipe hob, worktop and sink; we keep baths and bogs tidy and clean as we go; tidy sitting room and any other rooms that have been used (mainly plumping cushions, clearing away papers, odd book, etc). Probably about an hour and 10 minutes daily.

Cleaner: weekly: mops hard floors, vacuums, polishes mirrors, cleans utility and bathrooms/bogs, dusts, irons - 6 hours.

About twice a year cleaner does an extra 8 hours to wipe paintwork, thoroughly dust - including lampshades, pictures, inside of windows, etc.

Carpets - every couple of years.

Really thorough deepclean about every six years when individual rooms are repainted/decorated.

We are very tidy except dd who we think may have been planted by a cuckoo

BoredZelda · 09/11/2021 22:25

I still don’t really get what deep cleaning means?

Moving furniture to clean under/ behind it. Taking down curtains to wash, cleaning carpets, soft furniture. Proper cleaning of grouting, cleaning the tops and inside of the kitchen cabinets, proper clean of the fridge (shelves out etc)

Twillow · 09/11/2021 22:25

If you do the organised Mum method you get to do half an hour one day a week deep cleaning one area - so across 2 months everywhere gets a decent going over (this is extra to routine regular hoovering and keeping tidy - its the deeper clean things like dusting, wipe skirting boards, pull out sofa, declutter, window clean). It works for me. No way could I do the whole house in one go!

whatnumber · 09/11/2021 22:26

Get a cleaner to do a deep clean once a year.
Loads of people on our local Facebook page do that it seems.

This is MN. Everyone is down to their last 10p and can only every dream of having a cleaner.

Babyghirl · 09/11/2021 22:27

@ghejxodn
I clean everyday even thou me and oh work, so no one in it lol. It gets dusted hoovered mopped everyday a deep clean once a month, so that's wood work windows and everything else takes me all day to do the deep clean would take longer if I did not clean everyday but I'm ocd so in my head it needs done everyday.

flashy44 · 09/11/2021 22:30

Once a year,a big clean and clear out

Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 09/11/2021 22:31

When we move house

HalloHello · 09/11/2021 22:37

@Theyellowflamingo

“People only clean their kitchen once a week??”

Depends how you define “cleaning the kitchen”. I clean up crumbs or spills on counters or floors as I go, probably most days but I don’t call that “cleaning the kitchen” it’s just part of preparing and clearing up food.

Kitchen cleaning as in scrubbing inside the microwave or cleaning cupboard doors or wiping out the fridge? Yeah, I don’t even do that once a week - doesn’t need doing.

I clean the counters, hob, splashback, sink, table, oven door, fridge door, microwave everyday. Once a week do dusting, floors, fridge inside, oven inside. Cupboards - once while I was pregnant and nesting 😅
Seren85 · 09/11/2021 22:47

Discovered this week that my deep clean point is when people who don't often come to my house, come to my house. My Mum, I might make sure my washing up is done and clutter removed. My Auntie who is like my Gran, floor's extra done just in case. Cousin who's never been to my house and I'm behind the toilet bowl looking for dust bunnies.

StoneofDestiny · 09/11/2021 22:47

Give things a real clear out after Christmas - spring clean. Not all at once, but a good go. Great to do when it's cold and miserable outside.
To be fair, house never gets very dirty - no pets. Don't do steam cleaning of carpets or settees etc - but a shoes off indoor routine means carpets just need a hoovering.

Can't stand mess, so house is tidy in the main.
