How often do you deep clean your house all the way through?

Firstly, AIBU to be totally fed up of cleaning?!
My house is not a tip (I don't think!) but I have just spent 2 whole days cleaning it from top to bottom and it's still not finished. Twice a year I usually deep clean all the way through- things such as touch up paint, clean rugs/sofa/carpet with a professional carpet cleaner, scrub the whites around the windows, pull beds/furniture out and clean behind. I also spent at least an hour cleaning every day without the bigger jobs such as changing beds, cleaning blinds/windows etc. It honestly feels like a complete never ending task. Me and DH have been cleaning for the last two days in preparation for Christmas (last bit of annual leave before we put our tree up). I really wish I had a cleaner.

Gosh I do those things once a month Blush

I think I have ocd though...!

As someone who owns their own cleaning business I can tell you that none of my clients do this level of deep cleaning, nor do they ask for it.

I do the basics in my own house every day- quick vac throughout, takes 15 mins max. dishwasher empty, clean loo every day with a disinfectant spray and loo roll. Keep a cloth in bathroom and wipe mirrors, sink, shower screen with just wet cloth while in there doing teeth or whatever. Takes a minute and no more if you do it regularly.

When cooking I wipe things like front of cupboards or fridge or microwave if I see fingerprints, while waiting for something to boil or whatever.

The key is to do the odd minute here and there and it saves all this deep cleaning business.

We had a cleaning team do a deep clean as we had extended the house and wanted it all cleaned fully. Took them 9 hours!! And it wasn’t even as thorough as it should have been and it’s not a mansion. 5 bed house. So I won’t be doing THAT alone! But I tidy and do bits daily and we have a cleaner 2 hours a week. It’s ok but again not as thorough as I’d like.

@hulahooper2

I’m on a fb group and someone cleans their house from top to bottom every day , apart from the day the cleaners come …I smell porkie pies
Some people have a need to do it. Cleaning is my mental health, I literally can't stop.

depends on who is describing the so called "deep clean" because from what i can tell it could be anything from wiping things down to totally emptying a room out and cleaning every last thing before it went back into a room
mumpants · 10/11/2021 18:09

Nope ... I wish I had the time or inclination to do this but... no

wildchild554 · 10/11/2021 18:12

Never, I use team tomm method, so spend a certain amount time time doing basic level 1 jobs, then level jobs which are based in one room, do what I can in set amount of time, one day a week I do a focus day which I spend a bit more time time on the room set in that week. Go look up team tomm on facebook or have a look at the youtube videos with gem brey. The whole point is it stops you spending you life cleaning and yet helps you keep on top of it. Hope this helps OP.

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 10/11/2021 18:14

Happy ‘slattern’ here. Deep clean (done by someone paid to do it) on moving in, and on preparing home ready for selling. Cleaner each week keeps the place from becoming a health hazard the rest of the time. If I had the time and energy to deep clean, I’d be spending it either with my offspring doing something a lot more fun, or working. There’s always more work my company needs me to do, and frankly I enjoy my work and I do not enjoy cleaning 😁

Egghead68 · 10/11/2021 18:19

I just run the robots round once a week and dust/wipe a bit. That, taking the bins out and changing the sheets takes less than 2 hours a week. I never deep clean.

JamieFrasersBitOnTheSide · 10/11/2021 18:23

I deep clean a room a week and keep on top of the skirtings/marks on walls or paintwork and scruffy paint daily. For instance if one of the dogs come in and get mud on a wall it’s wiped off. Rugs get cleaned twice a year as do curtains. Windows get done once a week.

notoldjustpastyoung · 10/11/2021 18:30

Youo got to be crazy. I'm sure you've got a clean house and the need to deep clean doesn't happen but maybe twice a year and then not all at once. What is your real problem~? Life is too short to spend so much time cleaning. Have you no hobbies to do, friends to have a coffee with. We've learned this past two years life can finish for us without warning. Just don't. Please. Karen

I wouldn't call that mental health. OCD is a serious illness and you don't have to go on like that. You can refer yourself for NHS talking therapy if you don't want to see your GP about it.

janice511 · 10/11/2021 18:34

Quick dust, hoover, tidy one week, thorough clean pulling out beds etc every other week
Kitchen cleaned thoroughly every week, including cleaning out fridge. I am retiref now so have time, but previously cleaned thoroughly one weekend day.
Takes about 2 hrs 3 days per week

fetchacloth · 10/11/2021 18:42

@supersop60

I never do this, sorry. I will deep clean a room every so often, but life is too short....
Nor me - I live alone and work full time, sometimes with extra hours, so I value what free time I have left over. Like you, I deep clean a room when I think it needs it. The bathroom and kitchen get cleaned regularly though.
Suzanne999 · 10/11/2021 18:48

Just before the estate agents takes the photos to sell it!

Yes it is. It keeps negative thoughts at bay for me.

That is OCD.

Leonberger · 10/11/2021 18:53

I clean constantly and that’s just keeping on top of it…god help me if I had to do a deep clean of the place!

Bertiebiscuit · 10/11/2021 18:57

Never - it's a home not a laboratory or a hospital - life is too short and no one cares or should care, reasonably clean and tidy most of the time, hygienic kitchen and bathroom is plenty

HarrietsweetHarriet · 10/11/2021 19:02

No deep cleaning really. Hoover most days and dust occasionally. Try not to leave piles of papers etc about. Am a bit more thorough if we're expecting visitors!
House never seems to get particularly dirty but then we don't have dogs or small children!

vocksinsocks · 10/11/2021 19:09

I work full time and have a four year old. I do a basic hoover, kitchen, bathroom, etc. clean once a week (if I can be arsed) and that's about it. If I get any free time at all, I'm sitting down with a gin and Netflix thanks Grin

LoveableLou · 10/11/2021 19:12

OP, you might like the TOMM method (The Organised Mum Method). The basic premise is you concentrate on one room for 30 mins per day. After 30 mins you stop. You also need to add about 15 mins to chuck the hoover round, wipe kitchen surfaces etc. I quite like it, it's worked in our house.

maybloss2 · 10/11/2021 19:16

Hi op, I did a deep clean like you twice a year. This was after my kids left home and when I had a two bed terraced house. I would spend time once a week cleaning all the rooms and do one ‘extra’ job too like clean out a kitchen cupboard so that over time most nooks n crannies got a dusting and under furniture hoover. But I now live in a big house with my partner,2 teen lads
& a large dog. We can’t keep on top of it. Mainly cos the lads are lazy sods around the house. And because we can’t keep on top of it we now have carpet moths. I’m very upset as this is the first time in my life I’ve had new carpet throughout the house. I hate living in others dirt (I clean up my own!) and this has only got more so the older I’ve got, but my capacity for wasting my time cleaning up after others is seriously reduced!😳. I’m getting a cleaner and my partner is paying for it. 🤷‍♂️

Flowerpower23 · 10/11/2021 19:31

Single mum, work full time here. I hoover when needed usually twice a week, go along skirting boards once a week, pull out furniture and clean behind once a month. Keep clutter to a minimum and tidy away all toys every evening when my daughter is in bed, before I settle on the sofa to relax. Beds changed every Sunday. Bathrooms both cleaned once a week.

LakieLady · 10/11/2021 19:36

Another never here!

I do the kitchen every few weeks, the bathroom the same, and the living room, bedrooms and hall once in a blue moon.

I do tend to keep on top of things though, wipe down the hob, worktops and cupboards in the kitchen every few days and hoover pretty regularly, plus wipe the bathroom basin and spray the shower after I've used it.
