Just seen the footage of a woman attacking a horse after a "drag hunt"
She is a primary school teacher and a member of the pony club.
Aibu to think she should lose her job over this?

I wouldn’t want her teaching my child.
I’d go as far as changing schools

PatchworkElmer · 10/11/2021 11:16

I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I saw DC’s teacher treating an animal like this. Certainly if I did, I wouldn’t want them anywhere near him again.

leatherboundbooks · 10/11/2021 11:21

People who abuse people often start off abusing animals so that alone would concern me about her being involved with young people, husband's business shouldn't be boycotted though, unless there is proof that he is not safe to have in the house

WildExcuses · 10/11/2021 11:26

The witch hunts is awful - whilst her actions were abhorrent, she shouldn't be in fear for her physical safety and that of her children. That's unacceptable.

I will save my concern for the horses that also shouldn’t have to fear for their physical safety.
but are at risk being around this woman.

Rhannion · 10/11/2021 11:31

I get that you have to be firm with horses as they are powerful animals, and could be a danger to themselves and humans, but kicking and hitting like that it’s appalling.
I have heard that if a pony bites a swift slap on the nose should stop that, as it’s not on to bite , but this was something else, poor horse.

Lady08 · 10/11/2021 11:47

Would everyone be ok if this was a woman punching and kicking her child in public?
No!

So why is an animal, which is unable to speak out, any different. I despise animal abusers, they’re cowards! I sincerely hope she either quits her job, or loses it!

julieca · 10/11/2021 11:50

@Rhannion nobody should be slapping a horse ever.
Yes I know some horsey people do. But it is never okay.

ExConstance · 10/11/2021 11:51

This sort of behaviour needs calling out for the abuse it is. I used to go to a riding school where my favourite horse would try to bite you if you tightened his girth, I presume it was uncomfortable or pinched a bit as he was perfectly sound and a pleasure to ride. There was a new instructor who was very much the "pony club" type, and she was helping me get ready to mount. I said i would hold the horses head and stroke and talk to him as distraction while she did the girth so he would not bite, she told me to do no such thing and she would "give him a jolly good slapping" if he tried it with her. I did as I was planning to do and did not return after that.

julieca · 10/11/2021 11:51

@FreeBritnee My family live in a rural area where there is a big hunt. I agree there is nothing that unusual in this woman's behaviour. It is wrong though.

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2021 11:57

@treguffin

Yes, she slapped it around the face. And it looked as though she kicked it as well. Awful behaviour. Still don't agree with her losing her job or her life ruined (and therefore her families life).
Yes she did slap it round the head, she then punched it on the head twice, and she also kicked it in thr chest twice.

I mean you can crack on thinking she is a great person to be teaching your small child, maybe even move your child if they are close by and in that age range so they can specially be taught by this woman, but if my kid was in that school I’d remove them before I let this woman be their teacher and most others agree. I guess we all have different standards.

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2021 11:59

Or maybe it’s only worth defending her keeping her job if it’s not your kid she is teaching?

Yes I don’t understand this. The people defending her, if it was a human she was abusing would it be the same?

So if you make a minor mistake at work, and your boss then drags you from th desk, slaps you about, punches you in the face a couple of times then kicks you in th chest twice. Do these people say well he shouldn’t loose his job over it?

What about your kids a bit annoying at school. The teacher punches your child in the face twice, kicks them in the chest twice, slaps them about a bit. Still going to argue that they should be teaching kids and keep their jobs?

Becayse be it an adult. A child or an animal it’s all fucking illegal and it’s not any more ok because it was an animal she abused. And I’m shocked anyone would think it is.

Voord · 10/11/2021 12:03

I’ve no knowledge of horses or the horse world, or whether what was filmed is normal - to me it looks like a pretty awful and unacceptable way to treat any animal and she should be rightly be investigated and punished (if a crime has been committed). What I don’t like is the pile on that comes with this kind of story. It has the air of a mob at times.

Megan2018 · 10/11/2021 12:13

She’ll be teaching mine soon. I’m not asking for her to lose her job.
WildExcuses · 10/11/2021 12:16

She’ll be teaching mine soon.

Doubt it.

Sure she will.

Guavaf1sh · 10/11/2021 12:27

The mob mentality is just awful, regardless of the crime. There was that dentist who shot a lion and his family and everyone who worked for him were subjected to the most awful treatment. The holier than thou social media world we live in is pretty disgusting

Totally agree.

It’s awful to think this behaviour may not be unusual but then I don’t understand why anyone would ever want to take part in a hunt. I would be a hunt protester if I lived in the countryside.

Of course it's fucking unusual.

I have mixed feelings - I do worry about the braying mob - but at the same time I can't condone or see any justifiable reason for what she did. It's not a case of "there but for the grace ..." because I don't kick and slap animals.

It’s not unusual nor is it fucking unusual. That’s not to say it isn’t wrong.
LakieLady · 10/11/2021 12:59

@BertramLacey

The slaps are horrible to see but the pony was probably not actually hurt by them.

They would have been. 101 of horse training is that you do not hit a horse around the head, ever. It's of no use from a training point of view but will make them head shy. Their muzzles are incredibly sensitive and packed full of nerve endings. They also have whiskers on their muzzles and whiskers have a part of the brain dedicated to processing the information they send. Horses can detect changes in air current and react accordingly from the information they receive in this way.

A horse cannot see in front of its nose and yet can detect different types of vegetation to eat from the touch alone. Horses use their muzzles to communicate via touch. It's one of the most sensitive parts of the body. Whacking a horse around the muzzle is like smacking you around the nose or mouth. This horse will have experienced physical pain and mental distress. Bear in mind that as prey animals they are good at hiding pain but you can see from the horse's reaction that it is stressed and upset.

That's really interesting, @BertramLacey. I knew they used their mouths and noses to check things out, but had no idea that they were so sensitive.

Thank you.
