To think a clean front door is important.

Pointless & lightheaded post.

Live rurally, in a very open area with high winds. Have loads of mud and dirt blow into front door, have a very large tree outside and leaves & other dirt blow off into the door. Also share a step with neighbour who has 5 very large dogs who often shake themselves right by the door (I don't mind, we have a dog too). So yeah our front door gets pretty grimy.

Therefore I clean it every month or so. Maybe more this time of year with a bucket of water and the hose. It goes get dirty in between so never stays spotless.

Dp thinks I'm mad. Aibu to to think not having a filthy front door is important? I mean it's the very first thing someone sees about your house really.

It's pvc so easy to clean!

Doesn't take 5 minutes reallt. He thinks I'm wasting my time as it'll be dirty again soon. But surely that's the whole point - keeping on top of it.

Probably the most boring post on mumsnet today. But I don't want a filthy front door!

Aibu?

I'm sure if Dp lived here alone or I didn't do it, it would never get cleaned!

Yes I think a clean door is quite important, but I'll admit I get a bit blind to it, I do ours 3-4 times a year, usually when I realise how bad it is and embarass myself into going out and cleaning it right away

mam0918 · 09/11/2021 13:16

Never cleaned my front door... don't know anyone that does.

I read in a memoir book and in the bit about 1940 it said that back then people washed their door and doorstep but that was basically highlighted and hammered home because no one does it now and they were pointing out it wasn't deemed weird then to regularly wash/sweep your steps and door.

ItsNotNormalLove · 09/11/2021 13:36

Cleaning your door is no more pointless than washing your car! Especially at this time of year. If he has a car, I bet your DH gets that washed on the regular, so why not your mucky front door?

LakieLady · 09/11/2021 13:43

I never used to clean my front door, but I got a new one last year and it looks so much nicer, I am inclined to give it a wipe occasionally.

Only when the birds have shat on it though, I wouldn't do it routinely.

Bluntness100 · 09/11/2021 13:51

Mine gets muddy down at the bottom, every so often I give it a wipe or hose rhe door step off, particularly if I have visitors coming, so I’m with you.

stairgates · 09/11/2021 13:51

Never cleaned my door here either but if you enjoy the feeling of it being cleaned then go for it. I love painting the walls indoors, turning them from grubby to immaculate, very therapeutic:)

SequinnedShawl · 09/11/2021 13:55

I do our porch, doors and windows monthly. Hate a grubby front door.

tealandteal · 09/11/2021 13:58

Our old front door was very tatty and hard to get looking actually clean. We have had a new one fitted which lots of people have commented really changes how the house looks, it’s not that different but definitely looks smarter.

JudgeJ · 09/11/2021 14:04

@statetrooperstacey

Yes. I clean mine op! And I notice other people’s as well, dirty bastards!
I'm currently paining my wooden front door, damned paint keeps going streaky so I'd love a PVC door I could just hose, though I did hose the garage door and clean the plastic fascias which was very satisfactory.
Christmas1988 · 09/11/2021 14:28

The windows cleaner cleans the from and back door when he comes just once a month, if I didn’t have him I doubt I’d even think to clean the front door monthly., I’d probably do it once a year at most.

CremeEggThief · 09/11/2021 14:31

In theory, I aim to clean outside doors every 6 months.
In reality, it's probably more like every 2 years.

gluenotsoup · 09/11/2021 16:00

Yes, I clean ours regularly. And I get the cobwebs from high up over the transom light. The bit I notice most- judgey alert- is the threshold strip. It has to be clean, the little gap hoovered out and wiped down. 😂

DinaofCloud9 · 09/11/2021 16:06

I clean mine every few months. I don't think it's important to do it, I just like to give it a good scrub.

I can't say I've ever noticed what other front doors look like though.

Valeriekat · 09/11/2021 18:16

Back in the day women scrubbed the front door area every day and polished the brass. It was a point of pride and self respect.

WholeClassKeptIn · 09/11/2021 18:24

We dont clean the car or the front door. Think of all those extra mìnutes each week 😁

Yeh an extra 5 whole minutes , that it takes me to do both front and back door.....what do you do with those precious minutes 😅
Chelyanne · 09/11/2021 19:05

Not important to me at all, I oil the bugger regularly though.

JingsMahBucket · 09/11/2021 23:45

@usernumberno46273 thank you for starting this thread. It made me realize the front of our house looks like a hot mess. We’ve just recently bought a house/flat and still need to buy household items. We need a rake for the leaves, an outdoor broom just for sweeping the exterior surfaces, and a grass trimmer. You’ve given me the DIY bug now! :)

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 10/11/2021 00:04

I clean mine too

NowEvenBetter · 10/11/2021 00:37

What if you actually value your time? And want no visitors? It’s not important to clean your door, obviously, ffs 😂

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 10/11/2021 00:53

YANBU. We clean our front door every month or so, when we clean the windows at the front.

lisaandalan · 10/11/2021 01:34

I agree with you, if you can clean it you should. X

IreneIddesleigh · 10/11/2021 02:14

It looks better when it's clean, but I rarely do it. Oh well! Grin The older I get, the more difficult I find it to care enough to keep up with cleaning. There are more important things than my front door's level of cleanliness. It's sufficiently challenging just to keep the inside of the house reasonably clean, honestly.

Thursa · 10/11/2021 03:08

The window cleaner did ours because both the front and back doors had glass in them. It cost me £10 a month. We’re in America now, with windows too high to DIY them. Need to find another cleaner, doubt it will be so cheap.

Chunkymenrock · 10/11/2021 03:27

Yadnbu! A 5 minute job and it makes all the difference!
