To think a clean front door is important.

Pointless & lightheaded post.

Live rurally, in a very open area with high winds. Have loads of mud and dirt blow into front door, have a very large tree outside and leaves & other dirt blow off into the door. Also share a step with neighbour who has 5 very large dogs who often shake themselves right by the door (I don't mind, we have a dog too). So yeah our front door gets pretty grimy.

Therefore I clean it every month or so. Maybe more this time of year with a bucket of water and the hose. It goes get dirty in between so never stays spotless.

Dp thinks I'm mad. Aibu to to think not having a filthy front door is important? I mean it's the very first thing someone sees about your house really.

It's pvc so easy to clean!

Doesn't take 5 minutes reallt. He thinks I'm wasting my time as it'll be dirty again soon. But surely that's the whole point - keeping on top of it.

Probably the most boring post on mumsnet today. But I don't want a filthy front door!

Aibu?

I'm sure if Dp lived here alone or I didn't do it, it would never get cleaned!

@statetrooperstacey When dd was a baby our county required nappies to be in a purple plastic bin bag next to the main bin. They weren't allowed to go in the main black bin so some people might be doing it for that reason. So glad our dd is out of nappies now as I used to hate it!

Don't think a clean door is important or unimportant really, unless its completely covered in mud or something. Nothing wrong with giving it a clean every now and then if you want to though!

@ModMajGeneral

Do you have a job OP?
Ahh, the subtle I must not have a job comment because I have 'too much time to clean'!

To truthful no I'm actually off work currently but even when I was at work, I still liked a clean home because that's me. My house is by no means spotless but clean by most people's standards. Doesn't take me long at all as it's kept on top of! I clean first thing and that's it. I'm all for keeping on top of things.

Plus, cleaning and organisation helps ease my anxiety. For me it really is a tidy home, a tidy mind. I can't relax in mess.

If it's anything to do with you, I'm also raising two disabled dc, one who doesn't sleep much at the minute so exhausted and caring for an elderly relative too . I don't have much spare time but it literally takes 5 whole minutes to clean my door once a month - 5 short minutes!

I know people that work bleddy long hours and keep immaculate homes and others who don't work (not judging, just saying) and cleaning isn't important to them!

When I go back to work, I'll still like a clean home.

I clean ours and the area around it (windows, open porch etc) probably every couple of months but it needs doing monthly really.

I do notice other people when they’re dirty aswell!

KloppsTeeth · 09/11/2021 11:49

I clean my front door too. About once every month, or if there are leaves stuck to it, more often.
I notice other front doors if they are dirty. One of the neighbours recently painted their door white. It has all mud splashed up it from the rain hitting the pavement. They should sell “front door dirt” colour paint to hide all the muck. Grin

Of course it matters, it’s slovenly to not do so. Dread the imagine the utter state of some of the homes of those commenting here. 🤢

supremelybaffled · 09/11/2021 11:53

Either DH or I will clean our periodically, maybe once a year or so. We're more likely to clean the windowsill right next to the front door actually, as that gets mucky really quickly for some odd reason.

I hope you are saying this while hoiking your bosom in a pinny and rollers, talking out of the corner of your mouth to your similarly-hoiking neighbour about that slattern down in number seventeen who doesn't always donkeystone her doorstep before 8 am. What is the world coming to?

WeAllHaveWings · 09/11/2021 11:56

Our window cleaner does our windows, window sills and frames, patio doors and frames and front door/door thresholds that are visible to the outside once a month for £10.

Towards the end of the month I can see the white front door starts to get a bit grimy especially at the top, but I think that is because it isn't flat and the little ledges catch the dirt and there is a canopy above it so the rain doesn't have enough access to clean it well.

thisplaceisweird · 09/11/2021 11:56

I like the outside of my house to look a little shabby. We live in a row of town houses in a city and I fear the one with the nicest shiniest paint and snazzy camera are just a target for burgulary. They obvious 'have more money' and care about their belongings from the outside.

godmum56 · 09/11/2021 11:57

what is this cleaning front door thing? Is it like washing the car which I also never do?

I've heard that before, that they target the houses which look less shabby.

@Verfremdungseffekt That photo is great, it's what I imagine about all the women cleaning the front step weekly. So much more housework just a couple of generations ago.

VickyEadieofThigh · 09/11/2021 12:06

I think I might have cleaned a front door once. I'm 63...

Dutch1e · 09/11/2021 12:16

I've never done it either but I know what I'll be doing today in the bitter fkn cold. Thanks a bunch Grin

missymousey · 09/11/2021 12:43

I clean mine occasionally, I agree it's part of having a nice place to come home to.

My neighbour scrubs her front steps with bleach every couple of months though, I'm not sure I can work up that level of enthusiasm.

EatYourVegetables · 09/11/2021 12:48

Lightheaded?

Maybe you should stop cleaning so much if it’s making you dizzy Grin

LittleGwyneth · 09/11/2021 12:54

I moved out of a flat once and the evil harpy of a landlady took money out of our deposit to clean the front door. I still very much haven't got over it.

TrudyRuby · 09/11/2021 12:56

YANBU, I spent a lot of time and money refurbishing painting my front door recently. I like a clean door and entrance, it says a lot about the people who live there.

HelplesslyHoping · 09/11/2021 13:00

It is important to me but obviously not to others. I scrub the doorstep and the door and sweep the gravel off the path once a week. It's not that weird is it?

harriethoyle · 09/11/2021 13:04

Oh God, another domestic task I'm failing at...!!

harriethoyle · 09/11/2021 13:05

Obviously I'm going to get home tonight and realise it's minging...

SirenSays · 09/11/2021 13:09

I moved to a rental property where for some reason the owners had switched out my very nice door with a badly painted very old one just before I moved in. I've never cleaned it because even clean it would look terrible. I did take a coin and scratch away the swastika I found on it though.

steppemum · 09/11/2021 13:12

ours is white pvc.

It gets wiped down a couple of times a year.

But I teach from home, so as soon as we could after covid I had students back, and in between students I had to spray everything, including door handles inside and out.

So it got washed A LOT.

(but only the front edge Grin)

we also have a large bush, and all the spiders fromthe bush like our doorway for their webs, which is a pain.
