To think a clean front door is important.

Pointless & lightheaded post.

Live rurally, in a very open area with high winds. Have loads of mud and dirt blow into front door, have a very large tree outside and leaves & other dirt blow off into the door. Also share a step with neighbour who has 5 very large dogs who often shake themselves right by the door (I don't mind, we have a dog too). So yeah our front door gets pretty grimy.

Therefore I clean it every month or so. Maybe more this time of year with a bucket of water and the hose. It goes get dirty in between so never stays spotless.

Dp thinks I'm mad. Aibu to to think not having a filthy front door is important? I mean it's the very first thing someone sees about your house really.

It's pvc so easy to clean!

Doesn't take 5 minutes reallt. He thinks I'm wasting my time as it'll be dirty again soon. But surely that's the whole point - keeping on top of it.

Probably the most boring post on mumsnet today. But I don't want a filthy front door!

Aibu?

I'm sure if Dp lived here alone or I didn't do it, it would never get cleaned!

It's as important as YOU want it to be. I clean mine from time to time but I'm not bothered about other people's.

MrTulkingIsFeelingHorny · 09/11/2021 10:39

Hihihi. it has never crossed my mind to clean mine. I did paint it when I moved in, because I didn't like the colour.

I actually think YABU to have a PVC front door, OP.

ancientgran · 09/11/2021 10:39

I do and still feel guilty when I think of my granny not only washing the frontdoor but donkey stoning the front step, scrubbing the pavement in front of her house with buckets of hot soapy water and scrubbing the front of the house upto the window level.

I won't repeat what she thought of women who didn't do the same. I feel her judgement.

ponkydonkey · 09/11/2021 10:39

Mine is absolutely awful at the moment...we live on a main road and it really needs doing!

As do the windows... must book the window cleaner and remove weeds from The window boxes too

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/11/2021 10:41

My front door needs cleaning about once a month. We live in a quiet street in London, so it's not mud. But the dust and grime dulls the paintwork, and spiders build webs in the glass bits. I'm far from house proud, but it becomes obvious when it hasn't been done.

Lottie4 · 09/11/2021 10:41

I clean mine, mainly as if I'm stood at a front door that filthy, I wonder how bad it's the other side. Also, it's nice to come home and have your home reasonably clean and that starts with the front door.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 09/11/2021 10:41

Our house is at a corner on a slight incline and loads of grit, leaves and general dirt blow up against our front door.

It was a white UPVC door and used to get filthy.

Got fed up cleaning it so paid a man to paint it red. Looks amazing and I’ve saved literally two minutes a month from no longer having to clean the door.

KosherDill · 09/11/2021 10:42

I do clean mine as well.

Weepingwillows12 · 09/11/2021 10:43

I really need to clean mine but it's on the long list of jobs that should get done but I never have time for

theemmadilemma · 09/11/2021 10:43

Yes, I have cleaned my front door regularly. No one should have a mucky front door.

janedani · 09/11/2021 10:43

I clean my front door, it is cream so shows the dirt and at this time of year lots of leaves collect by it. Cleaning it reminds me of my gran, her generation always kept the front of their houses immaculate - the front step mopped and the brass door knocker, letterbox ect polished. Think it was partly an excuse to chat to the neighbours as she lived in a terrace house

wertheppl · 09/11/2021 10:43

I don't think it's massively important but yes it needs cleaned every now and then and I don't live rurally.

In my old house the back of the house was set up against the road so we only ever used back door. On occasion someone wld come to front door and I'd open it and be horrified at the state of it and embarrassed and I'd give it a clean then and promise to remember to do it more frequently (and no doubt forget lol).

StormBaby · 09/11/2021 10:45

I do mine every three months and it gets filthy

banivani · 09/11/2021 10:47

Don't know about important, I'd say that depends on whether the cleaning is good for proper maintenance. When I was little we had a wood door that had to be cleaned and oiled once a year, for example. I don't think it's strange to want to clean it, I would think it's strange to prioritise it over cleaning the inside of the house iyswim.

I clean mine a lot more lately as I'm a childminder and have littlies knocking the door daily so probably once a week a deep scrub and then twice daily with antibac spray. I do think that using anti-bac on a front door twice daily is very strange - but appreciate it might be from some sort of idea to prevent germs spreading between the children? I don't think it's effective though, I'd spend my time on something else.

Vroomed · 09/11/2021 10:48

I do mine when I remember which isn’t often. It’s navy so hides the dirt. It gets dirty so quickly again that I do wonder what’s the point. I don’t care what people think of my front door. They don’t pay my salary. I’m not looking after their children or asking them into my house. I couldn’t give a fig what they think.

ApolloandDaphne · 09/11/2021 10:50

I have no idea how clean my front door is. I never use it. My back door is used constantly but it isn't dirty and I never clean it. I also live rurally and have a dog.

BingBongToTheMoon · 09/11/2021 10:50

I clean my front door (inside & out) every week when I’m doing my hallway & stairs.

ArachnidArachnid · 09/11/2021 10:51

I’ve been out and washed our main door of our flats! May do it again soon, it made me happier every time I came in and out

amsadandconfused · 09/11/2021 10:53

Never cleaned front door but regularly clean the pathway…the vermin with wings ie pigeons shit all over the path daily!!

AperolWhore · 09/11/2021 10:53

I clean mine weekly but I have a big thing about the house looking presentable. I grew up with grandparents who’s terrace house looked like a filthy scrap yard caused endless bullying at school so I’m probably slightly OTT about it.

But I agree, it’s nice to see a clean shiny front door ☺️

Elphame · 09/11/2021 10:54

Rural here too and with dogs.

I can safely say I have never cleaned my front door unless I was about to paint it.

User310 · 09/11/2021 10:55

I have never cleaned the outside of the front door but I do clean the door handle on both sides daily.

I absolutely hate touching peoples door handles.

Anordinarymum · 09/11/2021 10:55

I clean my front door and wipe the cobwebs away from the roof bit. I also bleach the steps and bash the mat and rearrange the flowerpots because I enjoy doing it.
I do this about once a month

Veronica25 · 09/11/2021 10:55

If it is as you mentioned it, you do have to clean it and remove the leaves.

We clear the leaves every week this time of the year that blow into our front door. We don't really clean the door, it does not look dirty, we live in the city. We just paint it when it needs retouching.

What about indoor doors? do you or clean it clean it as well. I do it every now and again but not very often. They look clean and were painted again recently

Snoods · 09/11/2021 10:56

Window cleaner cleans ours, and I usually wipe over it in between too. Takes 2 minutes and I just prefer to see it looking clean
