To think a clean front door is important.

Pointless & lightheaded post.

Live rurally, in a very open area with high winds. Have loads of mud and dirt blow into front door, have a very large tree outside and leaves & other dirt blow off into the door. Also share a step with neighbour who has 5 very large dogs who often shake themselves right by the door (I don't mind, we have a dog too). So yeah our front door gets pretty grimy.

Therefore I clean it every month or so. Maybe more this time of year with a bucket of water and the hose. It goes get dirty in between so never stays spotless.

Dp thinks I'm mad. Aibu to to think not having a filthy front door is important? I mean it's the very first thing someone sees about your house really.

It's pvc so easy to clean!

Doesn't take 5 minutes reallt. He thinks I'm wasting my time as it'll be dirty again soon. But surely that's the whole point - keeping on top of it.

Probably the most boring post on mumsnet today. But I don't want a filthy front door!

Aibu?

I'm sure if Dp lived here alone or I didn't do it, it would never get cleaned!

I've never cleaned mine. It's dark stained wood though so doesn't show the dirt.

Snoods · 09/11/2021 10:58

Ours is white, typical front door which was on when we bought the house .. top tip, give it a gentle scrub with pink stuff. Ours looked way better afterwards as it removed any scuffs. Just test an area first.

ParkheadParadise · 09/11/2021 10:59

Yes, I clean mine.
I also bleach my front steps.
Throw a bucket of bleach and water over the steps every week to keep them clean.

HitchhikersGuide · 09/11/2021 10:59

I've been thinking of giving mine a clean but can't quite be bothered.
I don't know why but I'm finding it really heartwarming that so many people do! It speaks of a gentler time somehow?!

Tightwad2020 · 09/11/2021 11:00

I clean mine, (it's painted dark green) and the step, and the post box, and the window sills, and the light. The window cleaner does some of this when he comes, but we don't hire him often enough to keep these other things clean. Nor do I do this chore frequently enough - it's pretty grubby right now. I think I need to be more systematic in my cleaning routines, tbh.

EdgeOfTheSky · 09/11/2021 11:01

YANBU.

My mother used to scrub our front and back doorsteps.

I do clear weeds from the front path and sweep leaves, but am too lazy to do anything else.

Doomed.

violetanemone · 09/11/2021 11:02

Nothing wrong with it either way really (cleaning or not cleaning).

I guess if you literally never clean it then in the long run it will wear quicker and you will need to replace it quicker (but that will take years and years).

I couldn't really care either way. Clean it if you want to clean it, don't if you don't :)

Kitkat151 · 09/11/2021 11:05

I clean mine....i LOVE my front door .....it’s brightly painted ....hardwood with Cast iron black furniture ..... any mark and it’s cleaned straight off.

Turtles25 · 09/11/2021 11:07

@MyGrassIsBrowner

Our window cleaner does ours!
Ours does ours too.

I agree Op. Clean door is the way forward

nanbread · 09/11/2021 11:11

I do clean mine but only a couple of times a year

0blio · 09/11/2021 11:12

Mine gets filthy too. I clean it when I wash my car, so...occasionally.

dunkaccino · 09/11/2021 11:12

I wipe the door handle if I know people are coming round - the dog uses it and it's usually quite muddy (farm). Pointless bothering with the rest of the door, the rain does a pretty good job, but it does get an annual wipe down before the christmas wreath goes on.

SirGawain · 09/11/2021 11:13

Suggest that he doesn't bother to wash the car; after all it will get dirty again.

clary · 09/11/2021 11:13

I agree OP, I don't have dogs or live rurally but my front door is white pvc (don't like it really) and I clean it. About every two weeks I would say. Quick wipe over and clean up any muddy marks.

I notice other people's if they are not clean. Worst thing is newsprint as a lot of people locally have a newspaper delivered.

ModMajGeneral · 09/11/2021 11:13

Do you have a job OP?

HugeBowlofChips · 09/11/2021 11:13

I not only wipe down my front door every week but also Brasso the door furniture.

I don't scrub front steps though. Apart from when the cats leave bloody corpses on them.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 09/11/2021 11:19

I've never cleaned mine, but I am admittedly slovenly. I don't think you're mad to do it, I bet it makes a real difference. It's just another thing to add to my list of 'stuff I never do but probably should'.

Suzi888 · 09/11/2021 11:20

YANBU I clean mine.

DappyApple · 09/11/2021 11:20

I do mine every once in a while but it doesn’t get noticeably dirty anyway. It’s not pvc though which I think attracts the dirt more
Pvc Window sills, facias and guttering on the porch though are a different story, they get grubby quite quickly so need doing more often.

I’d booked a window cleaner recently , and asked if he could do the fascia/ gutters alongside the windows, came up with a bollocks story why he wasn’t able to do them them just yet, so just did windows.
Did a half arsed job on those, had to go out after he’d been to clean everything he’d missed. So will do them myself.

Lowlifeinhighplaces · 09/11/2021 11:21

I have always cleaned the front door, never occurred to me not to, part of doing hall/stairs etc.

But then my gran was one of those step scrubbers every Monday, and tile paint once a year, which when I got my first flat I did the same. But then she did voice that some neighbours were lazy in not keeping the 'fronts' clean and tidy, that generation did that.

Nothing wrong with not cleaning/not cleaning each to their own but I admit I do notice when friends etc have not washed theirs!

Rural here and I work full time and no one else sees my door, but I do and that all that matters at the end of the day.

Thehop · 09/11/2021 11:22

I clean ours about monthly and notice other people’s!

1forAll74 · 09/11/2021 11:23

I dont have a front door, (old Victorian cottage, with just a back door) I wipe it down at times, as I did today, as there were two slugs, and four little snails stuck to the door., so swept them all into the border where there are a couple of shrubs and a few flowers growing.

FindingMeno · 09/11/2021 11:24

I agree.
I clean my front door regularly.
Anyone only has to walk along a street and notice how much more uplifting it is to see cared for homes to see why.

IntermittentParps · 09/11/2021 11:24

I think life's too short but then again you should see the state of my house

rrhuth · 09/11/2021 11:28

Yanbu to clean your door if you've nothing better to do it makes you happy, but yabu claiming it is 'important' - all the evidence suggests it is neither here nor there.
