To wonder why DD was refused food?

Y8 DD came back from a residential trip and said she and her friend asked for a the Yorkshire Pudding without the meat sprinkles - the server was sprinkling the meat on it in front of them so could have just given one before he sprinkled it.

They were both refused.

We were told that this venue caters for all diets so why would they have been refused this?

YABU to even give such trivial things a second thought.

Brefugee · 07/11/2021 18:45

I’m a vegetarian, when out and about yorkshire puddings often aren’t vegetarian, on top of that if the server meets the whims of one child they have to meet the whims of all.

I hope all servers dismiss your vegetarianism as a "whim" and put pork scratchings on them.* What a ridiculous thing to say.

*not really because I'm not a twat

The poster you're responding to clearly differentiated between being vegetarian and random whims. You've congratulated yourself on not being a twat, but you're not too bright either, sadly.

I'm a eat eater but my stomach is turning at the thought of 'meat sprinkles' 🤮

Annie2245 · 07/11/2021 18:57

No they just needed to have the vegetarian option which obviously didn’t include Yorkshire pudding.

JaffaCake70 · 07/11/2021 18:57
@Simonjt

Being vegetarian isnt a whim. It isnt difficult to serve a yorkshire pudding before sticking meat on top of it. That's literally all he had to do. Pick it up and serve it without meat.
This isnt "meeting a whim of one child."
Agreed

it's just the same as not wanting gravy or whatever, I don't understand why the server couldn't have just put the thing on the plate without the 'meat sprinkles', it was hardly making more work for him/her was it?

Vynalbob · 07/11/2021 19:46

Bet it was pulled pork... but they called it sprinkles (people at the centre).

I would maybe send a 'My DD enjoyed.... shame they didn't cater for them not wanting meat on their Yorkshire pud...'
.. but then make a mental note to get on paper or in email any details of other future trips.

julieca · 07/11/2021 21:16

Residential places reduce food waste by making the correct amount of food. So 10 vegetarian meals and 15 meat meals for 25 kids and adults. There won't be extra Yorkshire puds from the meat-eaters menu to give to those on the vegetarian menu.
It is different at a carvery as they do not make simply the exact amount needed.
The kids queue up and get served because that is cheaper than serving plated up food - takes less staff time. It does not mean they can have everything there.

Aussiegirl88 · 07/11/2021 21:29

Being an aussie super hard to find any Yorkshire puddings here, my Nanna always made them though with roast! My husband hates them so we never have them but all I'm thinking about now is how awesome would a Yorkshire pudding be sprinkled in meat and gravy 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

PearlyShamps · 07/11/2021 23:42

The sprinkles were pork, I haven't heard of this topping either

I wonder if the sprinkles were actually "bacon bits"? Your DD might have interpreted this as meaning it was pork. They are actually made without any meat at all, but taste like bacon. They're usually sprinkled on salads and things. (The Harvester used to have them in their salad cart)

Either way, I don't see why they couldn't just NOT sprinkle on a couple of the Yorkies, and let the girls have them their way.

julieca · 07/11/2021 23:53

@PearlyShamps I suspect because it would mean the two kids who had ordered a meat meal would not have got their Yorkshire puddings that came with the meal.

I imagine this too. Or that the staff member assumed people not wanting the meat were veggies and the yorkshires weren't suitable.

immersivereader · 08/11/2021 02:15

Such a kerfuffle

starrynight21 · 08/11/2021 02:38

Talk about a first world problem ! It doesn't appear that they were "refused food" as your OP suggested, they were just refused this particular variation . Why couldn't they just remove the "pork sprinkles" and then eat the pudding ?

HappyDays40 · 08/11/2021 03:13

Just not sprinkling meat on a Yorkshire pudding is hardly meeting a whim good lord!

CoronaPeroni · 08/11/2021 03:19

Imagine spending £££ on a residential trip and your child felt this non-incident was worth mentioning. I'd feel like I'd failed somehow!

And if this is true at all, they were probably told they couldn't have a Yorkshire pudding full stop nothing to do with the 'sprinkles' but more to do with it wasn't part of the eg nuggets and chips option.

HoppingPavlova · 08/11/2021 03:31

No idea. Maybe by refusing the ‘meat sprinkles?’ the server assumed they were vegetarian, and not knowing whether the puds were vegetarian in their own right they said no? Maybe there was a seperate veg menu which didn’t include the puds so, just in case, the server didn’t want to risk an irate parent contacting the service. If not vegetarian but just not wanting the meat sprinkles, maybe the girls should have clarified this and see if it made a difference. Seriously, who knows and honestly why bother about it?

halloweenie13 · 08/11/2021 03:35

were they maybe cooked with beef fat etc? as for the sprinkles I can only envisage shredded gammon lol

MissingColorado · 08/11/2021 03:39

I’m surprised by Simonjt comment about children’s whims. He’s usually a sensible poster who I often agree with. He must have been having an off day. 😂 It’s hardly a whim to not want meat sprinkles, whatever the fuck they are, on your meal. And not sprinkling meat (wtf) on a couple of Yorkshire was hardly difficult. And who cares if the next child didn’t want peas. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They just move along, it takes very little extra time. I’ve served food for hundreds, it’s not an issue unless you make it one.

halloweenie13 · 08/11/2021 03:39

Just to add, I previously did a shift at a festival in the VIP food tent whilst at uni and we often didn't have time to go and ask the chef about each food item being gluten free etc. so unless certain would just refuse it, especially with a massive queue . Rather safe than sorry by saying no than risking it with any potential allergies.

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 08/11/2021 03:53

Your daughter being told she couldn't have a Yorkshire pudding without the meat sprinkles is not her being "refused food". You sound completely ridiculous. If you're really concerned about this total non event then, by all means, contact the establishment and ask them what happened, but making a thread about it on the internet is very strange and isn't going to get you any answers.

Pixxie7 · 08/11/2021 04:02

Are the sprinkles the ones you put on salad?

Frankie4me · 08/11/2021 07:12

I think there needs to be more information to decide if you abu.

Did the children sign up for a vegetarian menu? If so, as other posters have said it’s possible they catered something completely different for the vegetarians and would be left short a portion.

Was there other meat / meat products used in the preparation of the food.

JustAnother30Something · 08/11/2021 08:39

So, did you ask them OP?
