To wonder why DD was refused food?

Y8 DD came back from a residential trip and said she and her friend asked for a the Yorkshire Pudding without the meat sprinkles - the server was sprinkling the meat on it in front of them so could have just given one before he sprinkled it.

They were both refused.

We were told that this venue caters for all diets so why would they have been refused this?

Is your daughter a vegetarian? Was she taking the whole meal that went with the Yorkshire pudding? Or did she want the Yorkshire pudding in addition to another main course she was taking? Was there a set menu?

cowburp · 06/11/2021 19:03

What would they do with the extra left over pork sprinkles though?

Maybe they should have accepted the sprinkles but on a separate plate?

mrsm43s · 06/11/2021 19:04

As others have said, I would imagine that she was trying to pick components from both the vegetarian menu and the meat menu. She can't do that. She either has the vegetarian menu, or the meat menu (and if she's opted for the vegetarian menu in advance - such as ticking "vegetarian" when asked for dietary requirements for the trip, she doesn't get to choose to eat someone else's Yorkshire pudding instead of the vegetarian option on the day)

smokey998 · 06/11/2021 19:07

How many of us request an item not be smeared across our dish? She didn't ask for anything different just that something not be included.

Think of a food you don't like..then someone insisting it had to added..would you be happy? No I thought not...then being told it has to be included as you're under 18!!!! ( and incapable of knowing what you like?)

Vegetarian is not the only reason why someone might not eat pork.

But you've no idea if this is what happened - the OP hasn't clarified if her DD is veggie, in which case it may have been part of the meat-eaters menu. Or it may be a mix-up/miscommunication somewhere along the line. And there's certainly no suggestion she was told she had to have meat sprinkles because she's under 18!

GreyhoundG1rl · 06/11/2021 19:13

Who told you the meat sprinkles were pork?

BoredZelda · 06/11/2021 19:17

Presumably they were still fed. A bit disingenuous to say they were refused food.

lanthanum · 06/11/2021 19:18

I've been at a carvery where you could only have the Yorkshire pud if you were having beef (and others where you can have it with anything). In the case of a residential, presumably they knew they were catering for 60 meat-eaters and 10 vegetarians, and only cooked 60 Yorkshire puddings. Also, a properly cooked pudding may have been cooked in beef dripping.

ChessieFL · 06/11/2021 19:21

Marking my place to see if the OP comes back to explain pork sprinkles!

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 06/11/2021 19:27

Yorkshire puddings with pork sprinkles. What’s that all about? Yorkshires are supposed to go with beef!

butterpuffed · 06/11/2021 19:37

How many of us request an item not be smeared across our dish?

All of us . I think I can safely say for all mners that we don't like smeared sprinkles Shock

clarcats · 06/11/2021 19:43

@smokey998

Jesus, why do people think that kids should just like it or lump it! adults wouldn't put up with that! It boils my piss when school do the whole..no juice only water..teachers don't just drink water all day. And they wonder why they don't get any respect from children. Children deserve the same as adults. complain and ask for a refund.
the water no juice thing is usually because schools are meant to educate children on healthy lifestyles and water is obviously part of that. Also juice is sticky if spilt, much easier if there's only water in their bottles as it doesn't make anything sticky if there's any spills (imagine 30x children with different 'juice' in their bottles too) I drink water in the classroom. I may have a different drink at break. Children are often allowed to bring 'juice' to have with their lunch.
Ozanj · 06/11/2021 19:46

They were probably different menu options for the veg / non-veg kids - schools often cater for halal & special dietary requirements in the veg option to save money so the pub might have been trying to protect the child.

Bimblybomeyelash · 06/11/2021 19:47

I’ve said yabu because I can’t believe that you and your child are giving this minor issue headspace. You have presumably spent several hundred pounds so your kid can go on a resident trip, and she comes moaning about Yorkshire puddings??

winterisaroundthecorner · 06/11/2021 19:50

I don't believe what they have said in the first place, maybe they are not lying, but maybe they are not telling the truth either.

But if you are so worried and annoyed, ask them.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 06/11/2021 19:52

@clarcats I drink red bull in the morning before the kids come in. I wonder if that poster would like it if we encouraged the kids to do that. What's good for the goose ...Grin

Exactly! My money's also on the 'not on the menu she had chosen' option.
ElephantOfRisk · 06/11/2021 20:13

Maybe they misheard? Did your daughter or friend then ask why they weren't allowed. Don't get me wrong, my DSs are shy and having been told no, they wouldn't question it, but they then wouldn't raise it later either.

GreenWhiteViolet · 06/11/2021 20:23

I think some posters are respobding not to the OP but to the posters upthread who did assert that if you're 'a child' you shouldn't be able to ask for something you dislike to be left off your plate, even if the food is being dished up in front of you and leaving one item off inconveniences nobody. Very odd attitude.

Until OP comes back to clarify, we won't know if it was a situation like this, if DD is vegetarian and the Yorkshire puddings may have been cooked in lard, or if they were part of a set meal that she didn't choose. At this point, everyone is speculating.

that's to get you through the day- imagine what the children drink before they come to school- I bet very few have a 'nice glass of water' to start the day!
If they come from a home where the parents aren't demanding that it's their child's right to drink what they want in school then they might be getting actual juice that comes from fruits without added chemicals or they may be drinking any manner of fizzy drinks along with their sugar loaded cereal!!
Mustn't judge but sometimes it's hard not to!!!

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 06/11/2021 20:53

@Just10moreminutesplease

Maybe it wasn’t suitable for vegetarians even without the added meat and server assumed they didn’t eat meat? It does sound odd though!

Did they get something different to eat?

Agree. May have been cooked in animal fat instead of sunflower oil?

I've never heard of meat sprinkles, by the way.

fourminutestosavetheworld · 06/11/2021 21:07

This is the sort of shit anyone who works in education has to endure right now.

You say no to a child, about anything, ever, and their parent kicks off.

ElephantOfRisk · 06/11/2021 22:19

I can remember overhearing DSs primary head having a bit of a rant to a parent about lunches. The essence of which was that they have a dining hall that fits 50-60 kids, over 200 kids in the school, about 40% eligible for free school meals, most of the rest from affluent families. That the staff did their best to prioritise making sure that the vulnerable kids were eating and if her little sebastian wasn't eating his school lunch then actually, given he'd be at home 2 hours later, she didn't see that it was a major problem and surely he should have had a decent breakfast and could get fed at home after school. if parent had a problem with that then she was welcome not to take a school meal and send in a packed lunch. I felt like applauding to be honest. I had fussy DC, so I sent them with a packed lunch. end of problem.

TrashyPanda · 06/11/2021 22:21

I’m wondering why the kid didn’t say anything.

Or just take it and scrape the “sprinkles” (which I imagine as hundreds and thousands, only meaty instead of sugary) off before eating.

Cant have wanted the Yorkshire that much.
