To wonder why DD was refused food?

TheLasrStraw · 06/11/2021 17:44

Y8 DD came back from a residential trip and said she and her friend asked for a the Yorkshire Pudding without the meat sprinkles - the server was sprinkling the meat on it in front of them so could have just given one before he sprinkled it.

They were both refused.

We were told that this venue caters for all diets so why would they have been refused this?

It's hardly the case that they were 'refused food". Who knows why they were not given the Yorkshire pudding without meat, only the venue will know the answer to this.
BUT I'm sure there would be plenty of other options for them to have, these centres DO cater for all diets, just generally not for fussiness. If it's a PGL or similar, they offer two or three mains, a veggie option, as well as soup, salads, fruit, puddings, bread etc at every meal I doubt they went hungry because they couldn't have Yorkshire pudding, whatever the reason for this was.

ImUninsultable · 06/11/2021 18:06

@Simonjt

And again, being a vegetarian isnt a whim. Even mass catering allows for vegetarians. If someone is serving as they go, they can manage a vegetarian or 2.

CricketCat · 06/11/2021 18:06

Let me just consult my crystal ball and I’ll get back to you..

toomuchlaundry · 06/11/2021 18:07

Were the Yorkshire puddings cooked in animal fat?

heidbuttsupper · 06/11/2021 18:07

This thread has really put me in the mood for Yorkshire puddings

ImUninsultable · 06/11/2021 18:09

OP, you said refused food. So I'm assuming they weren't provided with a vegetarian option and actually had no food. Is that not true? So they weren't refused food. Just not allowed a Yorkshire?

Maybe the PP are right and there was a separate veggie dish so they had only catered enough Yorkshire for the meat eaters and an entirely separate dish for the veggies.

turnaroundtime · 06/11/2021 18:09

@Simonjt

Meat sprinkles?

I’m a vegetarian, when out and about yorkshire puddings often aren’t vegetarian, on top of that if the server meets the whims of one child they have to meet the whims of all.

Whims? Do you consider all requests as whims? Jesus, you'd never cope in hospitality
HireStarter · 06/11/2021 18:09

Maybe they're worried they'd end up with more meat than yorkshires and they're meant to go together. Lots of places serve dishes and don't allow you to swap and change for that reason

Northofsomewhere · 06/11/2021 18:09

I think there's more to this than your daughter was aware. With Natasha's Law now in effect prepared fresh food should have a complete listen of allergens, not sure if this applies to hot serve over like this. Where I work we offer custom options and these don't have to have the allergen labels as it's assumed someone understands the risk of the items they're choosing (we also have a list of allergens available if asked). There are some options that are unavailable for custom orders (normally as they're part of a kit for other stuff), is it possible that they couldn't offer the Yorkshire pudding because then the allergen information would be incorrect and therefore illegal to offer. I can also see them just not wanting to cater to each student's individual tastes if they'd opted for a meal but didn't want all of the elements.

HBomberGal · 06/11/2021 18:10

Presumably the child was fed something, though? Just not the Yorkshire pudding? If so, I don't think you have a leg to stand on with the "why didn't the venue cater to all diets" thing.

Q123R · 06/11/2021 18:10

@arethereanyleftatall

Are you hoping that someone from the venue who was serving is online right now?

Needs more context.

My guess is that they have 50 Yorkshire's, to go with 50 bits of pork for the 50 kids who want the roast option. They have 50 portions of roasted vegetables to go with the 50 jacket potatoes for the veggie option. Kids, at a guess, can't just go along the line choosing which bits they do and don't want.

I agree with this. By giving them both YP without sprinkles means two others would have been without YP for their pork.
Theyellowflamingo · 06/11/2021 18:10

You’re being ridiculous calling it “refused food” as though they were left to starve. Don’t be so melodramatic!

Presumably the Yorkshires were part of one meal and there was also a vegetarian option. It messes up their portions if they let people eating the vegetarian option have bits of the meat meal too - just because children are collecting the food at a servery doesn’t make it a buffet. Presumably they were offered suitable alternative food so what’s the problem?!

rrockett · 06/11/2021 18:10

Presumably if she's picked a different option to the meal that included a Yorkshire pudding then there wouldn't be enough for those that had chosen that meal.

What was the rest of her dinner?

TheKeatingFive · 06/11/2021 18:11

Fgs OP, how are we supposed to know?

RightOnTheEdge · 06/11/2021 18:13

How can anyone know?
Are they vegetarian or didn't fancy the meat sprinkles?
Did the venue have no other options they could choose instead?
It would be a bit weird for the server to just refuse them food with no explanation. What did they say?
You need to ask the school or the venue if you really want to know.

GreenWhiteViolet · 06/11/2021 18:14

If the food arrived already plated up, then asking for a version with no sprinkles (or gravy, or peas) after being served could be seen as a nuisance.

You'd have to be a real dickhead to pour gravy over a child's food after they'd said they didn't want any, because you think they're a child and so should get what everyone else is given.

If OP's DD ordered a vegetarian meal and the Yorkshire pudding wasn't part of that, it's reasonable that she didn't get one. If it's just 'it comes with meat sprinkles so you can't have it without' then that's unreasonable. If the reason was that it was cooked in lard, why wouldn't the person dishing up mention that and see if she still wanted one?

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2021 18:14

I thought yorkies were suitable for veggies

Scabetty · 06/11/2021 18:14

Poor loves!

Order some pizzas in tonight and she’ll rally. Back to normal tomorrow with no traumatic lasting memories.

0blio · 06/11/2021 18:16

Please tell us what meat sprinkles are as I want some and how old your child is?

Thank you (and I agree with Simonjt)

grapewine · 06/11/2021 18:16

Genuinely, how would strangers on the Internet know?! Call the venue.

wheresmyshoe · 06/11/2021 18:19

Speaking as my past as the only vegetarian at my Agricultural Campus as Uni, I imagine they were cooked using lard. I got lucky and the dinner ladies took pity on me and made me my own Yorkie with veg oil after seeing me looking wistfully at the clouds that everyone else carted off. The standard and traditional way was lard though.

ISpyCobraKai · 06/11/2021 18:19

She's Year 8 so 12/13, why didn't she ask?Confused
Also want to know about the meat sprinkles thing obvs!

Theunamedcat · 06/11/2021 18:20

Are they veggie?

fallfallfall · 06/11/2021 18:22

spot on with @arethereanyleftatall
yorkies with meat for meat option will all food accounted for.
veggie option something else.

smokey998 · 06/11/2021 18:22

Jesus, why do people think that kids should just like it or lump it! adults wouldn't put up with that!
It boils my piss when school do the whole..no juice only water..teachers don't just drink water all day.
And they wonder why they don't get any respect from children. Children deserve the same as adults. complain and ask for a refund.
