@SequinnedShawl

Sausages in a steak pie? Confused

Mushrooms, yes. Kidney, yes (but not for me)
Onion, yes. Sausage? Hell no.

Why mix perfectly good steak with sausage? Hmm

Originally probably for the same reason as adding mushroom or kidney, they are cheap fillers compared to the cost of the steak

Never been asked Salt n Sauce

@nancywhisky

You need one sausage per person. Steak sausage, not pork.
@nancywhisky what on earth is steak sausage? do you mean beef?
nancywhisky · 06/11/2021 19:46

@amazeandastonish

Always called them steak sausages, but yes beef steak

ok thanks for that, but nope stil not ruining a decent steak pie to put a sausage in it, in fact we had the best steak pie for tea tonight, bought from the butchers shop. if i wanted steak and kidney then that is what i would buy, same thing with it having sausage in it, but i wouldnt anyway as that is just cheap filler stuff

Same! Infact I'm looking at the building where your username comes from lol.

Hes from East Coast so had only ever been asked salt and sauce.

BashfulClam · 06/11/2021 19:59

Scottish-steak only, apparently sausage was what bigger and poorer families did to bulk it out.

ArrrMeHearties · 06/11/2021 20:00

Sausage in steak pie every time. Beef links to be precise

ArrrMeHearties · 06/11/2021 20:00

Also Scottish here too

upinaballoon · 06/11/2021 20:00

@Thomasina79

This won’t be popular, but I like a small piece of kidney in my steak pie. Can’t seem to get hold of it for some reason. Never used sausage though!
Any sane person wants steak and kidney pie. Yummy gravy.
GrandTheftWalrus · 06/11/2021 20:04

I really want a steak pie now. Infact I mentioned this thread to dh and he wants one as well. Looks like I'm off to the butchers at some point this week then!

upinaballoon · 06/11/2021 20:06

The sausage is a filler, as is the kidney, and I've never put saus in before, it's a new idea to me, but I might try it.

MeridasMum · 06/11/2021 20:08

I think it's a money thing.

When we were skint, I'd add sausages to steak pie to fill it out.

(Scottish)

How lucky are you? @GrandTheftWalrus💚💚💚 The best view in Glasgow 😄

GrandTheftWalrus · 06/11/2021 20:13

@ParkheadParadise Envy - not envy Grin

Whataboutme21 · 06/11/2021 20:18

@SirChenjins

Sausage (also Scottish) - but it has to be those Wee Willy Winky beauts with about 0.01% meat. Delicious!
100% agree Grin

I’m Scottish and always put sausage in my steak pie - pastry on top only

canigooutyet · 06/11/2021 20:18

If I paying for a steak pie, I would be annoyed at getting some cheap filler in with my steak.

Do these butchers advertise them as steak and sausage?

Mum2jenny · 06/11/2021 20:22

Steak pie should never have sausage in it ever, ever!! Kidney if you like it is ok. But never any sausage, of any description.

From a fellow Scot.

ISpyCobraKai · 06/11/2021 20:26

Perhaps it came about because of money, but it really isn't now, it's traditional in some areas, and then only with some people/families.
I got it from my Mum, who got it from hers, from Ayrshire.
I'm on the Clyde now and it's mainly links included but the best local Butcher makes both.
A friend in Aberdeen doesn't even have the steak pie tradition at Hogmanay.

DahliaMacNamara · 06/11/2021 20:42

My Scottish mother always made her steak pie with the sausages through it. I wasn't fussy about my food as a meat-eating child, but this was one of my least favourite meals. My dad loved it, though.

PollyPeePants · 06/11/2021 20:46

Scottish and yes please to the sausage. Beef links to be precise.

GrandTheftWalrus · 06/11/2021 20:47

Anyone else have beef olives? I hated them so much they would actually give me a headache trying to eat them

ISpyCobraKai · 06/11/2021 20:48

Definitely only pastry on top, puff pastry of course, and must actually be on the pie, NOT a stew made and pastry cooked separately and plonked on top.
