AIBU-Leaving Property

Wingingit202122 · 06/11/2021 08:33

I’m currently in the process of completing a mutual exchange (house swap for council/HA tenants) and was wondering if IABU
i found a couple (mid 60s) who are downsizing to my flat and i am having there’s so we then filled all forms and had to send in proof of passport and address
We have had all of our inspection checks done and everything was ok so now we have been given a date to sign new tenancys
When we looked at each other’s property we were discussing what things we would leave behind and what we would take but agreed nothing to be certain until we had approval swap was actually going ahead
The husband emailed me last night with a list of things they were leaving in property and things they were expecting me to leave
They are leaving- carpets throughout the house also in bathroom and kitchen (31 years old which stink of dog), old curtains, lampshades, old fridge freezer and even older cooker, wardrobes and old bed frames
They are requesting i leave the same as a like for like swap so that none of us have the ‘stress of moving these heavy items’
I reply saying I will not leave any of these items as ive only had all of my items for less than 2 yrs as i got everything brand new when i moved to this house as had been in a shelter before this so had nothing. I had anticipated having to leave The carpet as don’t know how i would move this but wasn’t planning on leaving my living room wood flooring as i can use this in new house
Also my beds and childrens furniture i want to take, also my kitchen stuff!

He has replied saying they will now have to rethink the exchange as they don’t have the money to replace anything
I don’t understand as they can just bring there stuff with them and only thing to replace is the carpet

Chancing fuckers! Agree with @billy1966 keep a sharp eye out as they sound like the kind of people to be bitter enough to try and pull a fast one

Hankunamatata · 08/11/2021 21:15

I'd be taking all your flooring. Carpet can be refitted. They are cheeky enough to have you billed for disposal and keep the flooring

MoltenLasagne · 08/11/2021 21:25

They sound the type to take the light bulbs out of the light fittings - tight and cheeky fuckers to boot.

@Wingingit202122

I’m back guys! Sorry been back and forth with CF’s and HA all day! Got email from husband at 8.59am (housing opens at 9!) stating that they want to proceed but aren’t happy with my wanting to remove items. I explained i was wanting to now leave all flooring but taking all other things He was going to call my HA to find out what rights they have as, in his words, you accept the property ‘as is on viewing’ and they have interpreted that to mean it includes my furniture Called HA who couldn’t believe the audacity of them and Housong officer spent the best part of 3 hour worth of calls to them to resolve She told them they had until 3pm to make a decision to say if they want to sign paperwork on friday and if so, no more stunts like this They emailed her at 2.44pm saying they want to proceed! Officer emailed them back telling them that if they leave anything in the property they will be billed accordingly for disposal costs

Honestly been the most soul draining day

Well done!

Epic fail for the CFs!

Stath · 09/11/2021 00:37

What absolute dickheads!

@Wingingit202122 please take EVERYTHING you can now they’ve behaved like this. They deserve nowt.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/11/2021 07:03

thank fully HA were involved.
ridiculous people
we had to get rid of things, and the person who left our house also had to get of things

good luck in your move op

Ellie56 · 09/11/2021 16:59

Which bit of house swap didn't they understand? Hmm

Total CFs. Make sure you take the flooring as well.

User983590521 · 09/11/2021 18:02

I hope you are feeling a bit better today Wingingit.
The housing officer has the measure of them, at least, and should back you up if they try anything else.

DartmoorDoughnut · 10/11/2021 09:31

Yep absolutely strip your flat completely bare

Wingingit202122 · 10/11/2021 11:26

Monday was such a mind f*! Not knowing what was happening really messed me up emotionally especially when we are signing papers this week so ive obviously almost packed my flat up and dismantled furniture! Trying to do this around looking after my children and working hasn’t been easy at all so the thought of doing it all for no reason was devastating! At this point i’m just holding my breathe for friday to come and pass without any hiccups!
And yes, right or wrong, i’ve decided to take my flooring with me despite me telling them i’d leave it! They’ve caused me enough stress over the last 14ish weeks so i do t care at this point. Even my HO said i should take it as she predicts they will continue to be a nuisance and said she will bet money they won’t be ready on moving day to leave!

They don't deserve your flooring. On moving day I'd offer to help them move one of their carpets, so they're not completely floorless.

Fingers crossed that it goes okay. It's there anything you or the HO can do if they're not ready?

@MMMarmite That’s what i’m going to do! Send their carpet with the moving van on one of its many trips! But legally no, Friday we sign our new tenancies but they don’t start until monday so they have until then to legally leave, although we have agreed a saturday moving days

I did a house swap - mine was a larger semi-d in town, theirs a smaller mid terrace in a village.
The night before the move they asked to look at mine again so they came over and could see everything was packed up ready to go next day.
Next morning my daughter went to theirs to receive my stuff ( both sons and a rented van moving me) and they were still in bed and hadn’t packed anything! They were waiting for family to help who didn’t turn up til 5pm!
So as my sons emptied the van at my new house they took a load back to my old house!!! My daughter ended up having to empty their kitchen cupboards! The couple were in their 30s and perfectly fit and able.
Deffo CFs but I love my new home 😁

This is what i fear may happen! @FabulouslyFab dreading it as i’ll be fuming if they aren’t ready!

Good luck OP - keep us updated!

HalzTangz · 10/11/2021 21:41

@Ellmau

You should leave the flooring and the kitchen white goods, but not furniture or lampshades. Curtains are optional really.
I understand leaving flooring. White goods and furniture are not part of an exchage
Disfordarkchocolate · 10/11/2021 21:44

Bloody cheeky buggers.

Why on earth would you leave all that?

Pompom2367 · 11/11/2021 07:45

Good luck op

BigYellowHat · 11/11/2021 07:50

Wow! What a pair of cheeky buggers 😮 I can’t believe that they want to swap their scabby, stinky, stuff for your nice stuff. Is that even allowed given that you bought it?

ivykaty44 · 11/11/2021 07:59

They are CF pissing taking, they want you belongings

Tell them it’s a property swap & you can leave the floorings but your not leaving your belongings and you’ll be getting furniture removers in to move them etc

If they want to continue with the swap you’re happy to go ahead, otherwise you will look for another swap

Almostmenopausal · 11/11/2021 09:07

@Wingingit202122 Jeeeeeeeeeeez! They actually believed that because they viewed your home with your stuff in it (obviously! How else could they view it?!), that they could pick & choose whatever they liked from it?!?!?! So if you happened to have a set of Waterford Crystal you inherited from a family member, sat in an Oak Display Cabinet, they genuinely believed they could say "Right, well the 'rules' say we can have that!" ShockShockShockShockShockShock

MinnieGirl · 11/11/2021 09:40

I would be really concerned about the actual moving set up….
If that van is going back and forwards it’s going to be really hard to see if they’ve left anything or not cleaned the property. Wouldn’t it have been easier to hire two vans? One empties your house one empties CF’s. Then they pause outside while you have a quick clean and take pictures, as you are sure to be accused of something! Then you each u load. I couldn’t be doing all the room at a time business.

Cattitudes · 11/11/2021 22:39

Even my HO said i should take it

I would interpret that as a direct order from the HO to take the flooring. You cannot go against what she has requested that you do. She is probably as sick of them as you are. I know when we finally completed the estate agent for our vendors had a little celebration with us, we only had six months of their batshittery, she had had far more.

billy1966 · 12/11/2021 11:04

I would be asking for proof that they are packed and the place is decent.

I think you are going to find a filthy mess.

These are not nice people.

I think so too….

Contact the HO as soon as you get there if it is a filthy mess, and ask her to come and look at it . And take loads of pictures. She can insist on them paying for a clean
