AIBU-Leaving Property

Wingingit202122 · 06/11/2021 08:33

I’m currently in the process of completing a mutual exchange (house swap for council/HA tenants) and was wondering if IABU
i found a couple (mid 60s) who are downsizing to my flat and i am having there’s so we then filled all forms and had to send in proof of passport and address
We have had all of our inspection checks done and everything was ok so now we have been given a date to sign new tenancys
When we looked at each other’s property we were discussing what things we would leave behind and what we would take but agreed nothing to be certain until we had approval swap was actually going ahead
The husband emailed me last night with a list of things they were leaving in property and things they were expecting me to leave
They are leaving- carpets throughout the house also in bathroom and kitchen (31 years old which stink of dog), old curtains, lampshades, old fridge freezer and even older cooker, wardrobes and old bed frames
They are requesting i leave the same as a like for like swap so that none of us have the ‘stress of moving these heavy items’
I reply saying I will not leave any of these items as ive only had all of my items for less than 2 yrs as i got everything brand new when i moved to this house as had been in a shelter before this so had nothing. I had anticipated having to leave The carpet as don’t know how i would move this but wasn’t planning on leaving my living room wood flooring as i can use this in new house
Also my beds and childrens furniture i want to take, also my kitchen stuff!

He has replied saying they will now have to rethink the exchange as they don’t have the money to replace anything
I don’t understand as they can just bring there stuff with them and only thing to replace is the carpet

@Ellmau

You should leave the flooring and the kitchen white goods, but not furniture or lampshades. Curtains are optional really.
why should she leave them
RandomMess · 07/11/2021 16:46

They are hilarious.

You paid for removals so they can take all their old crud with them including carpets 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Absolutely don't cave.

Wingingit202122 · 07/11/2021 16:50

@Theunamedcat

And she left her rabbit and said you can have him my kids arnt interested
@Theunamedcat omg i’d have put the rabbit outside her new front door in its cage! Yes that’s what we’re doing with the van, they will be going back and forth which is why they are charging so much!

Has the HA not got a policy on what happens with exchanges? Definitely check what happens if you leave stuff like the carpet/flooring and take if it will be ripped out.

@Duchess379

They're cf's! Doing the 'we're old pensioners with no money' routine. They're getting a ground floor flat that they've waited 10yrs for & now expect you to leave white goods that you haven't paid for! Stick to your guns, it'll be cheaper for you in the long run 🤞🏻
"Almost" pensioners Grin That's the bit that tickles me.
beachtosunset · 07/11/2021 18:32

I am not sure i would trust this pair with anything now. Be sure of things like the meter readings. They'll expect you to stump up for their winter fuel care next.

You were daft to offer removal costs as they have clearly seen this as the thin edge of the wedge a gateway to other expenses to be covered.

Theunamedcat · 07/11/2021 19:46

Honestly I kept the rabbit found him a good home they left him stinking in so much filth he chewed through two layers of mesh to escape it we caught him cleaned him up and decided he isnt going back to her

Still1nLove · 07/11/2021 20:11

Can’t wait for the update

PumpkinsandTea · 07/11/2021 20:32

@Wingingit202122 It’s only if the property was then empty and vacant in between tenancies do they come in and remove carpets/flooring/left rubbish etc

Unfortunately this isn't usually the case. Most (not all, but most) HAs will arrange for flooring to be scrapped in between moves. It's a legal thing

Yearonebesties · 07/11/2021 21:39

Can’t wait for the update!

CastleCrasher · 07/11/2021 22:10

Almost pensioners Grin They've been waiting ten years for a place like yours, while by the sounds of things you could take your pick. Now is the time to stop being so accommodating to them. Either they want the swap on terms that suit you, or you pull out and go with the next offer. You don't owe them anything and have already done more than most offering to pay for their removal costs etc

BringMeTea · 08/11/2021 12:45

Stand firm OP! They are awful grabby chancers. Do not budge... Enjoy your new home wherever it may be... Flowers

MinnieGirl · 08/11/2021 16:38

Any update or reply from the CF’s?

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 08/11/2021 17:34

Also here for the update. They sound like they’re taking the piss.

Almostmenopausal · 08/11/2021 19:30

I don't think OP is coming back :(

Wingingit202122 · 08/11/2021 20:14

I’m back guys! Sorry been back and forth with CF’s and HA all day!
Got email from husband at 8.59am (housing opens at 9!) stating that they want to proceed but aren’t happy with my wanting to remove items. I explained i was wanting to now leave all flooring but taking all other things
He was going to call my HA to find out what rights they have as, in his words, you accept the property ‘as is on viewing’ and they have interpreted that to mean it includes my furniture
Called HA who couldn’t believe the audacity of them and Housong officer spent the best part of 3 hour worth of calls to them to resolve
She told them they had until 3pm to make a decision to say if they want to sign paperwork on friday and if so, no more stunts like this
They emailed her at 2.44pm saying they want to proceed! Officer emailed them back telling them that if they leave anything in the property they will be billed accordingly for disposal costs

Honestly been the most soul draining day

That is great that the housing officer is backing you up. Hopefully moving isn't too stressful and you really enjoy your new home.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 08/11/2021 20:23

Thank goodness!!
I cannot believe the audacity of people who think they can not only upgrade their old stuff with yours and also leave you to dispose of their old stuff!
Since when does acquiring a house mean you also acquire the contents!!?!

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/11/2021 20:24

That’s brilliant news! I hope it all goes well.

RandomMess · 08/11/2021 20:24

They will be the talk of the HA office!!

AutumnLeaves21 · 08/11/2021 20:25

What an absolute dickhead he is. Glad the HA are backing you up! Good on you for holding your nerve!

billy1966 · 08/11/2021 20:29

OP,
They sound like the dregs.
Have your wits about you, they really sound awful and will possibly try and make a stressful day even more so.

Minionbums · 08/11/2021 20:31

So what’s the situation with the flooring, are you still taking it? I’m so glad you’ve had some backup!

Bagadverts · 08/11/2021 20:32

Glad it all worked out. Enjoy your new home.

Still1nLove · 08/11/2021 20:56

Oh goodness, they want a swap including all your furniture! Absolute changers. I’m glad it’s been sorted for you
