Anyone else at the end of their tether with toddler illness?

It’s breaking me.

I thought we were over the worst of the A&E admissions and endless sleepless nights after a YEAR of non stop illness but it’s back.

Would anyone like a thread to vent/support each other? 😢

@Glassofshloer - thanks for the recommendation - DD sucks her thumb and that, of course, increases her chances of picking everything up left and right. I'll look into that hand gel!

I had no idea that kids falling ill on the same day of the week was a thing - I thought it just a weird coincidence (incubation period).

Our nursery is fab, they don't send them home unless they have to, the rules are 2 loose nappies, vomiting, covid symptoms or a temp that won't come down with calpol. It's the loose nappies and the temps that seem to get my 2yo sent home most often.

They're in full time through the year, so our 30 hours for ds works out to about 22 a week, roughly half the hours he should do.

2yo has just demolished a bowl of porridge. Waiting to see whether it stays down. Happy sunday.

Oh yes I feel your pain.

I have a 5 year old at school and a 3 year old that does 2 days at preschool. Since September we have not had a day where one of us hasn't been ill. Nothing serious, no covid (numerous PCRs between the 4 of us and regular LFTs for DH and I) but coughs, colds, tummy upsets, general being run down and ill.

3 year old goes to preschool mid week, gets sick, gets better for a day or so then goes back only to get sick again. 5 year old picks it up from 3 year old (or school) and is constantly on/off low level ill. DH and I seem to take turns getting whatever they've got. One day we collected eldest from school because she'd started coughing to take her for a PCR and her teacher told me they were down to 19 children in class that day, out of 30.

I actually took my 3 year old to the GP a few weeks ago because she just couldn't shift her cough after weeks and I was concerned about a chest infection. She was fine. But GP told me they obviously they do pick up everything going at this age when they start preschool (and I remember my eldest being ill quite a bit too) but this year they are seeing an unprecedented number of 2/3 year olds who are having much more prolonged illnesses, more than normal and sicker than normal (as in, being sent to hospital because they are really poorly not just 'kid with a cold'. A result of them all being kept away from people for a large chunk of their lives probably.

Luckily I vaccinated both of mine against chicken pox as babies so at least that's one thing I don't have to worry about. It's flying around preschool at an alarming rate again and so far we have avoided it. Eldest never caught it there either despite it being rife.

Roll on the spring. I should take out shares in kids Olbas Oil, Calpol plug in refills and Vicks at this rate!!

And if the colds, temps and PCR tests weren't enough we're now dealing with chicken pox! Give me strength! We were supposed to be away this weekend with friends and their kids something that's already been rearranged 3 times thanks to Covid and now it's unlikely we'll be going at all 😭

Glassofshloer · 04/12/2021 12:34

How are we all holding up here? A couple of clear weeks, now DD has a cough/cold again.

My DD has her fifth viral illness since Sept. This one is a stinking gooey cold with many emissions. And I've caught it. Lovely.

PollyRae16 · 04/12/2021 14:18

Chicken pox turned out to be hand foot and mouth so only a week off nursery and luckily grandparents managed to have days off to help cover childcare.

Just got a snotty nose at the moment but due to his asthma it makes him sound all wheezy 🤦🏼‍♀️

neverbeenskiing · 04/12/2021 14:33

After a blissful 7 days of no-one in the house being ill (the longest stretch we've managed since September) DS caught Hand, Foot and Mouth from Nursery and was really poorly with it for several days. Just as he seemed to be getting better DD got it, so she had to have a week off school and now she's on the mend I've got it. I feel absolutely horrendous and there's been some sort of crisis at DH's work so he's had to go into the office and I'm on my own with the kids. I really snapped at him when he told me he was going to have to go in and I'm feeling very guilty now. It's several weeks of barely any sleep, constant worry and the stress of trying to juggle all these bloody illnesses with work taking its toll I suppose.

Glassofshloer · 04/12/2021 18:15

@neverbeenskiing wish I could send you Flowers and Brew

It’s utterly miserable isn’t it. Winter nights are very long with a sick child.

Feel free to rant on here, sometimes you need to shake your fist & get it out!

@Glassofshloer thank you Flowers I'm not normally one to feel sorry for myself, generally I just get on with things but I think I've just hit a wall.

PollyRae16 · 06/12/2021 07:45

@neverbeenskiing I feel your pain! The utter stress of juggling work and kids off school and nursery is horrendous. Hope you got a bit of a break this weekend!

DS' asthma has now flared up thanks to a snotty nose so yet another day off nursery and off for a PCR test. Just hope this one comes back quicker than the last two 🤦🏼‍♀️

Glassofshloer · 07/12/2021 19:53

How did the PCR go @PollyRae16 ?

We took DD for one yesterday, negative. But her cough has got a bit worse today & she’s just started with a raised temperature 😞 plus I think she has a case of nappy thrush so the poor thing isn’t too happy.

Completely drained by it all.

Ours was negative thank god! Took less than 24 hours this time so back to work and nursery as normal.
Aww hope she feels better soon! It's so tough when they're coughing. I find a humidifier helps and vicks on the feet.
