Anyone else at the end of their tether with toddler illness?

It’s breaking me.

I thought we were over the worst of the A&E admissions and endless sleepless nights after a YEAR of non stop illness but it’s back.

Would anyone like a thread to vent/support each other? 😢

Yep, we're in the thick of it too. DS has been in nursery for 2.5 months and we're on cold number 4. He passed everything on to the baby too so no sleep in this house! Roll on the spring! 🤞🏻

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/11/2021 09:24

Sorry wrong thread
Keep going with toddler illness

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/11/2021 09:24

It gets better I'm promise

jamsandwich1 · 09/11/2021 09:29

It’s nice to know I’m not alone but sorry lots of others are suffering! DS is 2.5 and DD is 1 and it has been CONSTANT for the last 6-8 weeks. I think we have had about a 5 day break where they were both ok. I was up most of last night with DD as she was having coughing fits and I am just SHATTERED. I keep thinking I should take DS out to soft play to burn off some energy but every time we go we end up coming down with something else and I just can’t face more sleepless nights and worry and calpol and fevers and UGHHHHH

Hardbackwriter · 09/11/2021 09:38

Was this ‘normal’ in the days before nursery etc I wonder? I don’t remember being sick this much as a child in the early 90s but then I didn’t go to nursery. I really feel for those of you who are considering quitting work as I’m at the same point, so desperate I’m not really thinking about the long term.

I really do think it's been worse after lockdowns than it was before, and I've seen some articles saying these too, that there are unusually high numbers of illnesses circulating in children. DS1 started nursery at 9 months and he did go through a stage of constant colds but it was much shorter and more mild than what I and pretty much every other parent I know are finding at the moment.

Hardbackwriter · 09/11/2021 09:44

It seems to have lost its seasonality, too - I know it's autumn now but everyone I know was constantly ill even during the summer when you usually get a bit of a break from it.

Etherealhedgehog · 09/11/2021 10:41

@Glassofshloer oh god - don't feel mum guilt on top of everything else! (though I know that's easier said than done). We need whatever we need to get by, and it really feels like being kicked when you're down when the whole house is snotty AND you have to cancel the thing you've been looking forward to for weeks, leaving just the prospect of yet another weekend of endless Cocomelon and moaning.

@espressomartiniweeny we also missed HFM at nursery when DD was down for 12 days with a particularly nasty bug - not sure it was worth it tbh as everyone I know who's had it got off relatively more lightly with HFM - and I'm sure it will come our way soon. But still - every cloud!!!

The other thing that is driving me nuts about this is the fact that my mother has pretty terrible health anxiety around COVID, exacerbated by the fact that it's basically impossible to get seen at all by my parents' GP - so if DD has so much as a cough or runny nose they won't see us. DD has seen more of her grandparents who live the other end of the country than she has of my parents who live in the same city.... and we keep making plans to see them which get cancelled last minute because we still have the vestiges of a cough from the last bug (we wouldn't go if she was properly ill and always get COVID tested). I sympathise with them but I'm tempted to stop trying to see them at all because on the odd day when DD is well enough to do something I'd rather have more reliable plans with friends then plans to see my parents that will like as not get cancelled due to health anxiety. I keep trying to explain that they basically won't see her between now and the age of 2 if they can't deal with a toddler cough but it seems they just can't. Sad as I would like to see my own parents too at some point. At this rate I'm just hoping they'll make an exception for Christmas.

Glassofshloer · 09/11/2021 11:01

How annoying @Etherealhedgehog and I think you would absolutely be justified in making other plans - its fine if they don’t want to catch anything & are being super careful, but that’s their choice isn’t it.

We’ve finally got a face to face GP appointment for 12.30 today as I’m a bit worried about DD’s cough, it’s been a few days and is worse than ever, she was on oxygen week before last so I want to make sure it’s not another chest infection. Here’s hoping…

@Glassofshloer aww so glad you are being seen in person. It took me three telephone appointments before they saw my little girl a few weeks back. Totally unacceptable. Will definitely be more firm next week.

I hope her cough doesn't get any worse, such a constant source of worry isn't it. So very tiring.

Etherealhedgehog · 09/11/2021 12:10

@Glassofshloer so glad you're being seen and well done for getting an appointment - not an easy feat! Fingers crossed it's nothing serious and hope you get some respite soon

Bee888 · 09/11/2021 16:36

In the same nursery bug boat I think this should be the new name for nurseries ! my lg is 3 1/2 she gets cough after a cough and when ever she gets a cold it turns into a cough and she gets a temp most of the time she has ashma pumps as GP say it might be ashma/allergies tried her on monterlukest horrible stuff helped a little with the severity of the coughs but she had bad dreams and was up all night screaming apparantly 1 in 100 get that and mine did. juggling keeping a job down lack of sleep and she spends more time a home than nursery that we pay a fortune for .. if anyone has similar experience let me know and anything that works ????? thank you

Bunnycat101 · 09/11/2021 18:39

We’ve just hit first nursery exclusion of the winter. Felt oh so professional having my 2yo nip on screen screaming ‘snaaaaack’ while I was in the middle of a call.

Etherealhedgehog · 10/11/2021 16:13

Argh we've just had the dreaded call again - second time in less than a week. And there was me thinking we got off lightly as she only had a temp for 36 hrs last time Confused @Glassofshloer how is your daughter? Hope the appointment was ok

MrsR2018 · 10/11/2021 16:18

Oh I feel this thread so much.

My little boy is prone to ear infections and I’m just dreading this winter.
At £53 a day it seriously pains me every time he is off nursery (goes 4 days a week)

Solidarity to everyone trying to juggle poorly kids whilst holding down a job and not pissing off employers 👊🏼

Glassofshloer · 10/11/2021 16:20

Oh no @Etherealhedgehog you must dread seeing the number on your phone!

DD is on the mend thanks and has a weeks course of antibiotics, she’s eating a bit now and sleeping well so here’s hoping she can go back maybe Friday or Monday at the latest. MIL is currently here looking after her so we can work, but it’s doesn’t really work out as I still have to make all her meals/snacks, bring cups of tea etc Confused I’m obviously grateful but it’s not the same as her going to nursery.

PollyRae16 · 10/11/2021 23:39

Temp of 39.8 during the last half an hour of nursery on Tuesday 😩 luckily managed to get a doctor to see him at half 6 and he confirm a throat and ear infection. Absolutely fine today now just got to pray the results of his pcr come back before work tomorrow 🤞🏻

Glassofshloer · 11/11/2021 07:54

Fingers crossed @PollyRae16 - we have the dreaded PCR today, or rather DH does while I’m at work. Sucks to be him today!

OP posts:
PollyRae16 · 11/11/2021 07:58

Thank you @Glassofshloer ☺️ no sign of the results yet so just sat here waiting with a toddler bouncing off the walls 🙄 anyone else think the tests are taking way longer to come back recently?

Bunnycat101 · 11/11/2021 10:22

PollyRae16 You’ve been unlucky- mine came back in less than 12 hours. Hopefully you’ll get the results back some time today so can get some nursery time.

Trainblanket · 11/11/2021 11:58

Hope everyone’s little ones are feeling better today.

Ours is actually well this week! But nursery has closed today as there are so many staff off sick. I give up!!

PollyRae16 · 11/11/2021 12:31

I feel unlucky @Bunnycat101 still no sign of them so no chance of taking him into nursery now. Going to try and get as much work done during his nap 🤞🏻don't know if it's the walk in centre's that are slower?

Bluelegsredlegs · 11/11/2021 13:04

Yes yes yes! My twins are 3 and it’s absolutely constant. They’ve been Ill with a cold and cough for over 4 weeks so assuming two illnesses have overlapped.

Having them home for the day is so expensive (nursery is £146 a day £73 a day each!) and I get zero work done. They’ve been both in for three full days out of the last ten. My boss hasn’t said anything yet but feel like it’s coming soon

jamsandwich1 · 11/11/2021 18:29

I’ve just picked my two up from the childminder to be greeted with ‘I’m not sure they’re 100% right’
WHYYYYYY they’ve literally not properly bounced back from the last time they were poorly (5 days ago). I GIVE UP. It’s bloody relentless isn’t it.

neverbeenskiing · 11/11/2021 18:40

I thought we were actually on track to complete a full week with neither of them being ill and then I got the dreaded call from school at 2pm today to say that DD has diarrhoea and I need to collect her. I am genuinely worried that my work will think I'm making it up...at this point i'm not sure I would believe me!! If I was my manager I'd be thinking "surely her kids can't possibly be ill again!" Just holding my breath waiting for DS to come down with it now. I am off work tomorrow and had planned to spend all day catching up on work for my uni course as I haven't been able to do any for weeks due to DC constantly being ill. No chance of that now as I will have DD at home. I feel selfish for even thinking about work/studying when DD is poorly but I'm just so fed up of constantly feeling like I'm letting people down.

neverbeenskiing · 11/11/2021 18:42

My boss hasn’t said anything yet but feel like it’s coming soon

Me too. It's horrible the feeling of dread, isn't it? I am also worried it's only a matter of time before I make a stupid mistake at work because I'm constantly exhausted from dealing with sick children.
