Anyone else at the end of their tether with toddler illness?

Glassofshloer · 05/11/2021 12:34

It’s breaking me.

I thought we were over the worst of the A&E admissions and endless sleepless nights after a YEAR of non stop illness but it’s back.

Would anyone like a thread to vent/support each other? 😢

Oh I'm so with you on this. DS has multiple allergies and asthma so all the colds give him a cough and then he's not allowed to go to nursery until he's been tested. I'm pregnant and literally burst in to tears when nursery rang me to pick him up yet again 😩

Glassofshloer · 08/11/2021 19:55

@cookiesandcream24 yes we alternate calpol & nurofen as well, I find nurofen best for temperature, do you?

She’s back to a 40 degree temp so brought her downstairs & opened the windows and she’s hovering around 38 now. She just asked for one of my potato wedges so hoping her appetite is starting to return Blush

It’s such an insult isn’t it, covid took so much enjoyment of her babyhood and now it’s after effects are doing the same to toddlerhood. Very resentful at the moment. Sorry I’m a right misery guts at the moment!

menthol plug in thing seems to help here. But yeah getting a bit fed up of paying for nursery and then having to stay off work

Glassofshloer · 08/11/2021 20:07

I know what you mean @ShirleyPhallus it’s so sad when you realise just how much of their life they’re spending poorly & unhappy, and not themselves. Also turns me into a stressed out mum which can’t be fun for her. It’s relentless.

cookiesandcream24 · 08/11/2021 20:18

@Glassofshloer gosh 40 is high! How many days has she had this one then? Ooh I always think eating a little is a good sign. Give her more wedges!! Smile

Ohh don't I'm totally with you on the misery guts thing. Feel like I'm on a never ending treadmill of life right now 😩

Ihaveoflate · 08/11/2021 20:21

It's nice to know I'm not alone!

My 2 year old has only just recovered from a nasty virus and then started with another cold a couple of days ago. I'm pretty much at the end of my rope with it all and she goes and fractures her elbow yesterday. She now has a full pot on one arm! I'm sure whether to laugh or cry Confused

Trainblanket · 08/11/2021 22:24

@Ihaveoflate your poor baby! And you poor thing. There is only so much we can all take.

Sorry everyone is having a tough time. But thanks for sharing as it helps to know we’re not the only ones. I’ve been questioning everything. Are we dirty? Too clean? If only we could do something to stop the germs!

Also fed up of paying £££ for nursery we barely use.

sbhydrogen · 08/11/2021 22:29

My almost 2 year old DD has been at nursery for a year, and I can count on one hand the number of days she's not had a runny nose.

Her 4mo sister has already had a cold and a course of antibiotics thanks to the germs brought home from nursery.

sbhydrogen · 08/11/2021 22:31

Also fed up of paying £££ for nursery we barely use.

Yep, we feel the same!

giraffesaregiant · 08/11/2021 22:35

What have you got, I raise you Covid, a weeks gap then straight into hand, foot and mouth.

It's the crying, you don't expect a toddlers to cry so much, my neighbours must think I torture my poor DD. She seems to be miserable and tired all day the perk up after dinner when I'm exhausted.

Sunbeams09 · 08/11/2021 22:38

DH gets particularly wound up about not being able to go into nursery when ill. It’s alright for him though, I’m on maternity leave with the baby so it’s me that gets lumbered with the childcare anyway! Grin I got so down about this earlier tonight, I saved up extra so that I could keep my toddler in nursery whilst on maternity leave to spend time with my baby, do the coffee mornings and classes etc just like with my firstborn, and they’ve barely been to nursery since I had the baby! And I feel bad for my baby, firstly that I’m always distracted with the toddler and not devoting enough time to them, and also that they are exposed to more bugs when they are so tiny Sad

onetwothreeadventure · 08/11/2021 22:55

Same here. It's been months of constant colds/coughs/viruses, I don't even know what's new anymore. I was commenting to DH earlier that we've had 6 consecutive days of nursery and how amazing it was. I bloody jinxed the whole thing - 2 hours later the 3 year old has the shits and the 2 year old is choking coughing. I rubbed on some Vicks and she was sobbing 'please don't test my nose mummy'. Suffice to say, she isn't the only one who's had a sob this evening!

She had a lot of 40+ temps until summer but this is her first one since then Sad luckily it’s come down now, she’s dozing and I’m praying she gets a decent stretch without the coughing waking her up. She’s cutting her last molars we think and will only eat yoghurt, ella’s kitchen fruit pouches & the odd rich tea biscuit at the moment. Arghhh!

If I ever find something that stops the bugs I will let you know… sadly I think the only answer is living in the North Pole…

God I'd forgotten about the chickenpox, my two both had that, and missed family stuff as a result. Sickness bugs, covid tests, so much missed nursery. My alarm went off at 5.45 this morning because I need to have the kids at nursery for 7.30 so I can start work on time because dh is still too ill to take them. And I just lay there thinking about how relentless it all is. Ds has a cough, so will they send him home? Make a 3 year old do yet another covid test? Dd is a constant ball of snot. And miserable with it. I'm so tired. And wondering if its all worth it. Except my options are limited because we need my income. Sorry not very coherent this morning. Just fed up.

cowburp · 09/11/2021 06:42

It's getting to the extent that it would make more financial sense for me or DH to quit. I can only hope it eases up soon. It's just the double whammy of bugs and then waiting for test results.
cowburp · 09/11/2021 06:43

I got a spare swap out the LFT kit and little one and I "test" some of her toys first then I do hers. Seems to help but I have to try and not think about how weird it is that this is the world we live in now.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 09/11/2021 06:58

Yep, DD started nursery a couple of months back aged 1, she's been non stop ill ever since and I have been sorely tempted to just quit work and stay with her due to the extreme lack of sleep the household has been facing!

Similar to everyone above, coughs, colds, flu, chest infections, conjunctivitis, hand foot and mouth and so on...I just hope she will have a fantastic immunity come next winter. This period of poor sleep has knocked back my plans for another DC though as we're just so tired! Couldn't imagine being pregnant on 2/3 hrs sleep and working too.

MaryShelley1818 · 09/11/2021 07:00

Oh this thread 😢
I feel so much for everyone on here ((hugs)).
DS (4 next month) was such a poorly baby, I lived in A&E from him being about 4mths old!
Constant viruses, HFM, tonsillitis, RSV, sickness, constipation, he was given a spinal tap and treated for meningitis. I was so traumatised I developed health anxiety and was signed off work for 3mths. It DOES get better, he's very rarely ill now apart from the odd cold.
DD is 9mths and started nursery last week. She's had quite a few colds in her life from big brother being at nursery so I'm hoping she's got a bit of immunity to stuff already. (Gp told me this would be the case).
I'm dreading her starting to catch stuff as I'm on placement for University so really can't miss work days and also don't want my MH deteriorating again.
We've also got a lovely trip to CenterParcs booked for Winter Wonderland next month for DSs Birthday which I really want them to enjoy.

EishetChayil · 09/11/2021 07:03

I feel like every time we leave the house, DD gets sick. Then I catch it, then DH catches it. We all get better, go out again, and the cycle begins afresh. I feel like just staying home forever Confused

Glassofshloer · 09/11/2021 07:30

Oh everyone 😢

@MaryShelley1818 the spinal tap sounds incredibly scary, I can’t imagine how awful that was for you. I absolutely know what you mean about the health anxiety - whenever DD coughs in her sleep now, I instantly have what feels like a minor panic attack. Which sounds ridiculous but she never coughs in her sleep unless she has picked up yet another bug, and I just know here we go again with sleepless nights, worry, a sick child etc.

I’m on annual leave today as it is DD’s non-nursery day and I take it in turns with DH and MIL to take her. Was really looking forward to today & had a lovely day planned going for a winter beach walk & toddler group. But not going to happen now unfortunately, currently laid up with Peter rabbit on.

It makes me feel like a crap mum as whenever she’s ill I can’t get her to eat decent food so she ends up living on yoghurts/fruit pouches/biscuits and watching CBeebies for hours. All I want to do is get out in the fresh air and make her a proper meal. She’s normally an okay teeth brushed but flat out refuses and screams when she has a cough so that goes out the window too.

Was this ‘normal’ in the days before nursery etc I wonder? I don’t remember being sick this much as a child in the early 90s but then I didn’t go to nursery. I really feel for those of you who are considering quitting work as I’m at the same point, so desperate I’m not really thinking about the long term.

Dc has had a perma-cold since starting nursery a year ago.

I actually started recording illness last month as I felt we never had healthy days. Two days in the whole of October with no cough/ cold/ d&v/ temp. I actually felt lucky as one cough knocked us out of nursery for a week which meant we missed a nasty bout of hand foot and mouth doing the rounds.

It's worth remembering that it's all immune building and by the time they hit reception they will have iron clad immune systems. Hopefully.

Karma1981 · 09/11/2021 07:48

My 5 year old has had 4 high temps and a cough and cold permanently since September.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/11/2021 08:07

Well done @MazDazzle on your second dry weekend. While I think it's helping on the weight loss I'm not seeing any other benefits and I'm a bit disappointed
I'm on a one day fast today - another one on Friday.
Hoping to hit under 11 stone by Friday (I'm mega tall so that is basically optimal weight ). Maintaining it over Xmas might be more of a challenge Grin

Habbyhadno · 09/11/2021 08:13

Yes, my youngest had been ill for coming up to 8 weeks now, cough of doom, then immediately after that hand foot and mouth (that everyone in the family caught apart from me), cough again, now she has a cold. Her face is sore from wiping snot away constantly for two months. Currently there's a Sick bug doing the rounds at school so literally sitting and waiting for that to hit us. I'm finding it really tough.
