To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

I also think they would be banned for public sale. If it really was for one night a year then that would be one thing but they've been going off randomly round here for weeks now.

I've got a dog, he couldn't care less. But when my grandma was alive she had Alzheimer's and was absolutely terrified. It was heartbreaking to see and not at all uncommon. People are so fucking selfish just because they want to watch some bright lights and hear some big bangs. Fuck anyone else

HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 12:13

A lot of gardens are too small for many of them to be safely used too, yet people don't seem to care or consider it.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 05/11/2021 12:14

It’s not just scaring people’s pets. It’s killing some of them. As well as wild animals too. Horses running themselves to heart failure. Deer trying to escape the noise and running into fences or traffic. A dog local to me died of a heart attack on Sunday night.

And it frightens children, people with learning difficulties who don’t understand what they are, people with PTSD who have experienced gun violence or bombs and elderly people or people with hearing sensitivities.

It really isn’t just about young Rover shaking for an hour.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/11/2021 12:14

I love bonfire night! As a kid it was one of my favourite evenings.

As an adult I see so many problems with it.

I think as long as you're responsible, let neighbours know, clean up afterwards and try and get the quiet ones then it's not too bad?

Tal45 · 05/11/2021 12:15

We've got some low noise ones from Tesco. We used to go to organised displays every year but last year with covid we got our own and decided to do the same again this year as there don't seem to be any displays near us. I wouldn't be against them being banned. Around here though pheasant shooting and the army practicing cause a lot more bangs than fireworks ever will.

Gonnagetgoing · 05/11/2021 12:18

Unfortunately they should be restricted to just a few nights - even Diwali - why should people have more than one night of fireworks?

There's either a large house or somewhere near me where for ages (usually a Saturday night) all through the year for the past few years since I've been here they let off fireworks - presumably because they can afford to do this and are allowed to do so. Why?

My cat is terrified of fireworks as she doesn't like the bangs and hides under anything (sofa usually) to try to get away from them.

usernumberno46273 · 05/11/2021 12:19

Asda usually have a good selection. No don't you've tried there already! Tesco, Morrison's Aldi? Pretty sure sainsburys don't sell them
Now. A range store near me had a counter the other day.

Gonnagetgoing · 05/11/2021 12:20

@Viviennemary

Good. Fireworks should be banned.
I don't think they should be banned - you can get quiet ones or just have for organised displays because as we've seen on this thread people like to set them off randomly and unsafely.

I saw something about a man being burned by a firework in the news recently - not saying it serves them right but too many idiots buy and use them who aren't aware of the damage they can cause.

Rarely see adverts on TV related to November 5th fireworks accidents either.

If you're a grown adult too thick to have worked out how to protect yourself from a few sporadic loud noises then...

That's not fair at all. You have no idea why that poster might have a fear of loud, unexpexted noises! Angry[/quote]
I also addressed other possible reasons.
Do you only half read every post?

Fireworks night has turned into fireworks fortnight and it can be like a warzone on our estate for weeks on end now. I help out at an animal sanctuary and we need people to go and sit with the animals for 2 weeks at this time of year because they can get so frightened by fireworks. I will be doing that again tonight and over the weekend.

I love fireworks but I would like them to be restricted to public displays and then at least those with animals can plan for them. Horses can be spooked by them and a baby zebra at a local wildlife park died last year because it was scared by fireworks.

If they are still sold for public use, then they should be restricted to low noise ones and it would be helpful if residents could warn their neighbours (with more than 10 minutes' notice as one of our neighbours did last night). This allows those with nervous pets to plan for them. I have friends whose animals are so frightened that they drive to woodland or to countryside for some peace and quiet.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/11/2021 12:22

I’m sorry I also think they shouldn’t be on general sale but only licensed displays

GrandDuchessRomanov · 05/11/2021 12:25

I'd just like to say a big thank you to the fucker who let one off last night which then proceeded to shoot through my conservatory window.

Spent all morning trying to find a glazier to come round and replace the glass.

God knows where it came from as we have a large garden, so it must have been one of those that make it sound like you are living in a war zone.

Poor dog is in bits and I am SO angry.

Selfish, thoughtless, dangerous fuckers.

Star81 · 05/11/2021 12:26

In an ideal world organised displays would be all we have but in our area all have been banned by council ‘due to covid’ along with all the Christmas light switch ons. So of course people are having to make their own entertainment,

Meanwhile, in our nearest city we have most of the world there and outdoor protests galore which are apparently ok 🤔🤔

grapewine · 05/11/2021 12:26

@NothingSafe

Good. They shouldn't be sold to the general public anyway.
Agree. No need.
GrandDuchessRomanov · 05/11/2021 12:26

Also meant to say it was still smouldering when I got to it so we were lucky it didn't burn the fucking house down with us in it!

Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 12:27

Good, they should be banned. They are a fucking nuisance and people use any excuse to use them. Not to mention they are distressing to the elderly, veterans and animals.

Some dick on an SM group recently wasn't just looking for fire works to piss people off with, she was actively looking for "fireworks that make noise" because places, rightly so, have considered that multiple loud explosions every night for 4 months in winter are a bit, you know, antisocial? Fuck off with that shit you inconsiderate twat. At least keep them noiseless if you are going to inconvenience everyone around you for your 1 year olds birthday party Hmm

They have been going off since the beginning of September here and will continue right into January.

I wish it was a fortnight.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 05/11/2021 12:28

Get some silent fireworks, they do exist (online).
I hate bonfire night because it's not just one night, people take the bloody piss.

ColinTheKoala · 05/11/2021 12:29

@Rainywindoww

Fireworks are awful and should be completely banned for sale to everyone apart from big displays.

Well done Sainsburys for stopping selling them!

Agreed. Sorry OP.
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 05/11/2021 12:29

They kill birds and other air creatures. They frighten pets and people. They're a noise nuisance for several months a year.

I'm in favour of public events only and if we could switch to lights rather than noisy fireworks then so much the better.

take cover...
amysaurus87 · 05/11/2021 12:31

Lidl are selling them and I believe Asda have silent fireworks this year so you get all the pretty colours with none of the pet scaring noise.

Mulhollandmagoo · 05/11/2021 12:31

We went to a 'bangless' firework display last night, it was really good! didn't take anything away from the fireworks at all. I don't think they should be sold to the public because they have the potential to be really dangerous, or at least their sale should be much more regulated than it is now

PrincessPaws · 05/11/2021 12:31

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine

Goodness, it's one day of the year. Come on people. By that logic they should stop selling anything that could frighten people. Clown costumes, balloons, etc.

Aldi had some last year. I'm sure they did

But that's the thing, it isn't.

We've had fireworks going off near us for 2 weeks already, and they will continue almost daily until 2nd January. I have no problem with them at Diwali or Bonfire Night, but some people are selfish inconsiderate fuckwits that will set them off any time between 5pm-2am, any random night for quarter of the year.

Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 12:32

This place has the right idea.

As a child, I loved fireworks night. As I've got older, and have seen the impact on pets & people, I have now begun to hate it. I don't remember fireworks being so much of an issue when I was younger though. I think people generally only went to organised displays then as fireworks weren't so readily available.
