To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

No, they don't have to. But in order to see fireworks for Bonfire Night, which clearly much of the country enjoys doing, residents must do it themselves.

I'm not doing fireworks. I'm not English, and honestly think Bonfire Night is stupid. But I'm certainly not going to stop on a tradition for the tens of thousands of people in my local area!

Well I'm English (not that I think that has any relivance) and I would stop the stupid tradition for the whole country. It's stupid and dangerous and has a lot more negatives than pluses. It should be organised displays only.
MeanderingGently · 05/11/2021 16:17

YANBU.
I love fireworks, and loved bonfire night as a child. Of course we should be able to buy fireworks, and well done Tesco for still selling them, they had them in store in our local right up until last night (not been today).

5thnonblonde · 05/11/2021 16:18

Sigh. I never suggested waste management would cease, but that kerbside collections in a large truck would. Plenty of other countries people use communal bins away from the home or self-transport refuse to a dump.

If you're a grown adult too thick to have worked out how to protect yourself from a few sporadic loud noises then...

That said,I appreciate that some conflict veterans can be very distressed by them so it's not for me to say how they could mitigate their individual exposure.

I'm not advocating the things, I've never bought one in my life.[/quote]
@RichardMarxisinnocent

Well, aren't you a delight.

I'm far from pretty much any definition of thick, thanks, but I am autistic and have sensory processing difficulties which make fireworks (as well as other loud, and certain pitched, noises) physically painful, as well as making me jump.

I will spend this evening wearing ear defenders, in my own home, because of the potential for loud noises, and I will do so tomorrow and Sunday too - so, mitigating the noise as much as possible - but since there have been fireworks all week (and will be going forward for however long, and then for however many days over Christmas and New Year), do you suggest I sit with ear defenders on every evening in case there are fireworks??

And before you say you mentioned ptsd and accuse people of not reading your post fully, don't make wildly sweeping statements that are offensive to a lot of people.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 05/11/2021 16:37

I think you have tagged the wrong person? It wasn't me who posted that about being thick, it was @Watchingyou2sleezes. They were replying to me saying I find fireworks terrifying. I hope this evening and this weekend isn't too awful for you.

Cait73 · 05/11/2021 16:43

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine if it was ONLY one day of the year it might not be such a problem, I'm in a remote part of Devon and we've had them all week, a startled cow escaped her field abandoning her calf and spending a cold wet night in the middle of the road, the Dartmoor ponies have gone to ground and a friends horse cut his side open on his barbed wire fence trying to get out

But yeah enjoy your ONE DAY A YEAR

Rockhopper81 · 05/11/2021 16:47

Oh gosh @RichardMarxisinnocent, I'm so, so sorry - it was totally accidental and I really hope I haven't offended you. Again, so sorry. 😞

I hope your weekend/weeks going forward aren't too terrible either - I agree they can be genuinely frightening, and if people don't 'get' it, it seems easy to trivialise.

@Watchingyou2sleezes - my reply (and the enclosed rant) was meant for you.

Mommabear20 · 05/11/2021 16:48

Fireworks should be illegal except for public displays that require a license! My poor dog is currently sat shaking under a blanket on my knee and it's not even 5pm yet!

It's absolutely fine, I'm not offended. I thought it was likely accidental.

Thank you. Yes I think people either just don't get it, or in some cases they don't really care. There are some organised displays near me this year so I hope that reduces how many people set them off in their gardens. Last year they were going off all around me (I'm in a city) for hours and it sounded like what I imagine being in a war zone might sound like.

Larryyourwaiter · 05/11/2021 17:29

There’s a large organised event near me every year, you pay to get in (there are other things on too). DD and I have stood outside before to just watch the fireworks, amazed that nearby houses are still setting off the odd crappy one whilst a massive display is going on literally next door. What a waste of time.

SmellyOldOwls · 05/11/2021 17:32

Fireworks are illegal here in NI, well you can get a licence for them but no one does. Some people buy illegal ones in the markets but even they are pish, just squealers and rockets so hardly anyone bothers. I have fond memories of big Halloween parties with proper fireworks when I was a child but I don't miss them. No one I know mentions it, it's just not a thing anymore.

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine

Goodness, it's one day of the year. Come on people. By that logic they should stop selling anything that could frighten people. Clown costumes, balloons, etc.

Aldi had some last year. I'm sure they did

It's not though is it? They've been letting them off round here for the last week. I think most people would be ok with it if it was genuinely one night.
AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2021 17:41

We usually have them, our kids love them, and we always make a guy for the bonfire. But we haven't this year, as we have a new puppy. Hope you managed to find some!

not sure how many people are injured by balloons and clown costumes every year?

an article from 2011 (think its american)
Since 1973, more than 110 children have died as a result of suffocation involving uninflated balloons or pieces of balloons

another american article
The results of a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) analysis show that 18 people died from non-occupational fireworks incidents in the U.S. in 2020 compared to 12 in 2019. Between 2005 and 2020, there were 136 deaths from fireworks misuse in total or 8.5 deaths per year on average. Along with the noticeable uptick in deaths, injuries from pyrotechnic misuse are skyrocketing.
The research states that an estimated 15,600 people required emergency room treatment in U.S. hospitals due to accidents involving fireworks last year, up from approximately 10,000 in 2019.

Couldnt find anything on clown costumes though

gogohm · 05/11/2021 17:54

My dog is currently sitting quaking with fear and the cat has disappeared, I wish they weren't for sale to the public

Isababybel · 05/11/2021 18:31

Yes yabu, my baby keeps getting woken up by fucking bang bang bang bang which for 1 night is not the end of the world but it seems to be going on 5 nights either side of bonfire night!!!

LegoSteppingStones · 05/11/2021 18:34

I used to enjoy watching the fireworks displays, occasionally bought my own for the kids until I started working as a carer.
I cared for some ex-servicemen & women that suffered from ptsd, the fireworks were horrendous for some Sad
I wish this was highlighted just as much as it is for pets at Guy Fawkes

I really wish that petition focussed more on war vets and the vulnerable in society.

People (unfortunately) will only give a shit if it's impacting other humans or people they might know, which it absolutely does.

Not disregarding pets at all, my cats are quite scatty this evening with them. But it would have far more of an impact if it was human and environmentally focussed rather than being seen as people "whining about their pets every year".

Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 18:57

I am not kidding or exaggerating when I say they have been going on here since September. As soon as it started getting darker earlier the years around here decided it was fireworks time. Not just on weekends, not just Diwali, not just tonight. It's been over a month of random fireworks blowing up whenever some arsehole feels like it.

And just like last year they will go over Christmas and into January.

Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 19:02

Here is an example of why it's fucking pointless.

Pricks across the road are setting off one extremely loud, white firework every 2 minutes. It's not even a display, just idiots setting them off for the sake of it.

What's the fucking point!!!!

Another person saying it's not just one night. It's not even 'just' three nights (5th Nov, Diwali, NYE). Where I live it's pretty constant from October through to January. Weddings, funerals, birthdays, kids messing about in the street.

And they start as soon as it gets dark and go on throughout the night. Last night they went off at midnight, 1.30, 2.15, 3am-ish with the last lot at 5am. I know this because I was up with the dog who was shivering and shaking in terror. He's OK this evening because I have just forked out £50 at the vet for a sedative.

I'd welcome it 'just' being three nights a year. But it really isn't and I am fed up of dreading the nights. My elderly next door neighbours are fed up with it. My neighbour across the street who has a son with SEND is at her wits' end because her DS is so distressed by the noise and lights. I have another neighbour with a young baby who is desperate for the fireworks to end because the noise keeps waking her child. Enough is enough.

Bloody right, terrible things.
