To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

Goodness, it's one day of the year. Come on people. By that logic they should stop selling anything that could frighten people. Clown costumes, balloons, etc.

Aldi had some last year. I'm sure they did

It's not one day of the year around here. We have fireworks the entire week of Diwali and Guy Fawkes, which then continues sporadically through to Christmas.

I quite a like a few fireworks but have really had enough.

Derbee · 05/11/2021 12:45

I know it’s inevitable that people buy fireworks, but the more expensive, and difficult to hold of the better. It would be ideal to ban the sale to individuals

If it was just one day of the year it wouldn't be such a problem would it?
Djifunrsn · 05/11/2021 12:46

Probably because it’s becoming more and more socially unacceptable to let fireworks off at home. Last night (4 Nov) they were let off round here for a couple of hours. The night before (3 Nov) there was one big load, the likes of which I’ve never heard in a residential area. So loud they sounded like they were in my own garden.

My dog has spent 2 hours shaking both nights. We are braced for at least 2 further nights and maybe 3.

There is a lot of wildlife round here as well. Not to mention the pollution. We’re told that putting something in the wrong bin makes us some sort of mass murdering eco criminal, but pumping this crap into the air is apparently ok.

Not to mention adults who are terrified or aggravated by the noise.

I’ve had to clean bits of firework off my garden in the past.

I am well and truly fed up with them and they need banning.

You're right, balloons shouldn't be sold. Terrible for the environment and wildlife when idiots let them 'go to heaven' Hmm Clowns on the other hand don't seem to affect wildlife, pets or PTSD sufferers....

I don’t want to go to an organised display. My children are too young, I don’t want to spend several hours in the cold in a crowded place, being fleeced for candy floss, burgers, glow sticks etc waiting for the actual fireworks fo begin.

I don’t need a spectacular display. I want to let them off at 6pm not midnight. I also hate loud bangers going off all night, that’s not what I’m seeking to do.

While we're on the topic - please whatever people do don't send any of those bloody chinese lanterns up into the sky. Whatever they are made of - they are lethal.

Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 12:48

There is a Facebook group campaigning to ban the sale of fireworks to the general public here:

www.facebook.com/groups/33147273706

It's a private group so you'll have to request to join. Lots of helpful information on here, information about a debate in Parliament on the subject next week, and, sadly, some distressing stories about fireworks incidents.

Ozanj · 05/11/2021 12:48

@GoodnightGrandma

Good. My dog has been petrified the last two nights because of fireworks, and it’s going to go on all weekend 😡
That’s on you. Responsible pet owners would do their bit to help their pets through this period.
Angel2702 · 05/11/2021 12:49

Asda have the no noise ones.

Most of the displays here are cancelled or sold out as soon as tickets went on sale.

Absolutely agree!
girlmom21 · 05/11/2021 12:50

If it helps anyone with scared dogs, there was a vet on This Morning who suggested playing loud dance music and dancing around to it/being cheery. The beat will down out the bangs and if it looks like you're enjoying yourself the dog will feel calmer.

Derbee · 05/11/2021 12:51

Sorry, but I agree with this. You have ample opportunity to train and desensitise your pets to firework sounds.

HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 12:51

BS. You can do everything you can and still have a traumatised animal. We've tried everything and have a number of measures in place this year as always but none of them will really make a difference.

'Desensitising' is cruel. You're repeatedly exposing an animal to something they're terrified off.
HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 12:52

They're pets not fucking robots. We've tried everything, end result is still the same.

SingYouBackToSleep · 05/11/2021 12:52

Then don’t go. But other people don’t want you having your own fireworks which scare animals and some people.

I really don’t get it. People buy guards for their fires, don’t let their kids near matches, tell them to be careful of the oven, mind the kettle it’s hot.... but there you go 4 year old child, hold a fucking sparkler burning at thousands of degrees....and tell them to stand a few feet away from the explosives cos it’s fun! The sooner they’re banned the better.

Nyfluff · 05/11/2021 12:53

If we're cancelling noise fireworks can we also cancel my neighbours building noise that has been going on 6 months? It's insanely noisy and unpredictable, and terrible for an autistic adhd household working from home. I'll take a few pops and bangs over this insufferable racket any day.

SingYouBackToSleep · 05/11/2021 12:53

Thick!

Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 12:53

I mentioned earlier that I help out at a rescue centre with tens of dogs and cats, some of whom are quite chilled out and some of whom are traumatised by the noise of fireworks.

Can those experts saying above that dog owners should desensitise their pets to the noise explain how we manage at the rescue centre for the two weeks around end of October/early November when idiots are letting off fireworks?

And perhaps they could also advise those who own horses and other livestock how to manage their animals for the period before and after the 5th November?

Thank you

Nyfluff · 05/11/2021 12:54

EggsellentSmithers · 05/11/2021 12:54
@EggsellentSmithers - why not go and find a spot nearby if you can't get into the display itself? You'll still be able to enjoy the fireworks from a viewing point nearby.
If we could go to a display I would, but both locations are far enough away tht we’d need to drive, and parking at either would be busy at the best of times let alone tonight, they will be rammed and watching from a busy 30mph street. One is in a very densely populated town and one is rural.

Luckily fireworks aren’t generally problematic here, I’ve not heard any this week when there would usually be loads in the run up, in previous years it’s been crazy. There are occasionally some at Christmas/New Year, but thankfully not for days on end. I know it can be a lot worse in other locations so it’s really just one night here!

GatoradeMeBitch · 05/11/2021 12:54

Balloons are another discussion, but to my knowledge no animals die of fright because of clowns, or have to be tranquilized because the circus is in town.

And where do you live that restricts fireworks to one night? So even if Bonfire Night falls on a weekend you still hear nothing? How unusual...

nordicnorth · 05/11/2021 12:55

Amazing that you can buy explosives at the supermarket in the Uk isn't it!

They should be banned and for organised events only. 2 petrified house cats and a child with ASD in this house.
