To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

Goodness, it's one day of the year. Come on people. By that logic they should stop selling anything that could frighten people. Clown costumes, balloons, etc.

Aldi had some last year. I'm sure they did

Diwali.

November 5th(6th/7th depending on day of the week)

New Year

Weddings

Memorials

Any bloody day you choose. Etc

Marmite27 · 05/11/2021 13:56

@SalsaLove

I hate fireworks. Someone set off a long and loud display last night. It seemed professionally done but still obnoxious.
It was Diwali yesterday.
NotAnotherPylon · 05/11/2021 13:57

I'm in NI and fireworks are a big thing here for Halloween night. Outdoor fireworks are illegal here unless you have a licence. But for a fortnight before Halloween there were fireworks going off left, right and centre. So people always manage to get them somewhere. Maybe they have to meet a dodgy dealer down a dark alley!

whatwouldsueheckdo · 05/11/2021 13:58

I know very few people in real life who have the same joy-zapping attitude to fireworks as Mumsnet. Enjoy yours op.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 05/11/2021 13:59

@Worldwide2

I have never heard fireworks going off for weeks or months? I'm not trying to cause an argument but i genuinely haven't heard any fireworks unless bonfire/new years eve?
The 5th September was the first night we had fireworks. And it's been constant now since around the 20th October. Day and night. We were woken up at midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday just one big massive bang. I hate them sold to the public with a passion

Neither have we. In fact we have had far fewer fireworks going off so far this year. I think it is because bonfire night is over a weekend rather than midweek.

It isn't an ethnically diverse area so no Diwali fireworks either.

People advertise them on Facebook! Sometimes they put a remote control in the photo to get around FB selling rules.
emeraldcity2000 · 05/11/2021 14:00

Oh come on. For every irresponsible firework user how many irresponsible dog owners are there? Those of us who don't particularly want to be jumped on by your dog, have our toddlers terrified by them or tread in their excrement aren't advocating your dogs are banned.... it's give and take.

Doggydoodah123 · 05/11/2021 14:01

Good. They shouldn't be sold to the general public anyway.
I whole heartedly agree!
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 05/11/2021 14:01

@Motherdare

I have to put up with all sorts of noise pollution where I live. My opposite neighbours have moved out of their house and left the rest of us dealing with the terrible noise of their builders excavating a basement. This after a year of renovating the entire four storey house from top to bottom. Are they also unobservant selfish twats (to quote someone above?).

I have dogs fouling my gate post multiple times every day. Some owners stand there watching me getting into my car and still leave their precious pooch to “do what comes naturally” on my property. My next-door neighbour lets his dog into the garden on the dot of 10pm every single night for a good old bark at the squirrels. Every night.

My other neighbours have gardeners who come with leaf-blowers and make the most soul-destroying noise for hours at a time, to the point I have to pack up my work and leave the house to find some peace.

Yet a few sparklers and low-level fireworks for small children at tea-time once a year has everyone up in arms? Get a grip.

Not comparable at all OP. Stop being ridiculous.

Your low level fireworks have been making my evenings a nightmare for fucking weeks.

Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 14:03

@emeraldcity2000 - it's not just about dogs - it's about wildlife, livestock and people too.

Your post implies that because some people don't control their dogs properly that it's ok to terrorise neighbourhoods with fireworks for two weeks a year around bonfire night!

inferiorCatSlave · 05/11/2021 14:03

You can have a bonfire/fire pit, toast some marshmallows and light a few sparklers if you must.

We're doing this as all the local big displays aren't happening again due to covid reasons.

We do have some fountains and some very quick not that loud banger type ones got them on-line weeks ago.

Only time our pets have had issues was few years ago when some neigbours along back- quite some distance from us- manged somehow to direct one of their fireworks to right outside our back door - there was an almighty bang and light. Could have been nasty if we'd been out there.

I personally do think there should be more restrictions perhaps on size/type sold directly to the public.

It only takes that one day to frighten an animal to death. I was only reading yesterday about a poor little dog who died of a heart attack from being frightened by fireworks. "Only one day" indeed Angry
SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/11/2021 14:05

Good. Fireworks are horrible!

They're dangerous and disturb domestic pets, farm animals and wildlife.

A dog that I meet occasionally on walks had a fit and heart attack with sheer terror due to the noise of fireworks only two nights ago. He was a young dog - 3, and a smashing little soul.

I've known countless rabbits and guinea pigs which have died of shock on bonfire night (and roundabouts because it's never confined to the one night, is it?)

They should be banned.

But there are laws to keep dogs under control and manage their excrement. So that they dont cause inconvenience, injury or trauma to people. Anyone who doesn’t keep their dog under control and dispose of their excrement, can and should be dealt with according to those laws. Why shouldn’t fireworks be subject to similar laws?

Cross-post Doggy - I wonder if it's the same one. Are you in the NE?

Mojoj · 05/11/2021 14:07

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine do balloons make pets shiver and shake uncontrollably while eejits let off fireworks not just on 5th Nov but in the week leading up to GF night and no doubt into next week too. The sooner they're banned to the general public, the better. Go to a display.

NameChange74567 · 05/11/2021 14:09

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine

Great idea!
Clarich007 · 05/11/2021 14:10

I've been out half the morning looking fir my cat, trying to get him in before the bloody things start, yet again tonight. One night? I don't think so. They have been going off a week round here, and will be until Monday I expect. Bloody fireworks!!

tigger1001 · 05/11/2021 14:14

@GrandDuchessRomanov

I'd just like to say a big thank you to the fucker who let one off last night which then proceeded to shoot through my conservatory window.

Spent all morning trying to find a glazier to come round and replace the glass.

God knows where it came from as we have a large garden, so it must have been one of those that make it sound like you are living in a war zone.

Poor dog is in bits and I am SO angry.

Selfish, thoughtless, dangerous fuckers.

I'm so sorry it happened to you. You and your poor dog must have got such a fright.

This is exactly why they should not be sold to the general public.

takealettermsjones · 05/11/2021 14:15

The noise is the least of the problems caused by fireworks. They are literally explosives. Why don't we (in this country) allow anyone over 18 to just buy a gun and have a little modest gun range in their garden for their own enjoyment? Because, in the wrong hands, they are dangerous.

I used to have a neighbour whose cat died in absolutely horrific circumstances. It was deliberate and a firework was used. I won't post more details but you get the gist. If banning general sale and/or requiring a licence would stop that happening to just one more animal, that's absolutely worth it in my book.

Hoppinggreen · 05/11/2021 14:19

If they make as much noise and mess as fireworks then yes we should Helium balloons should definitely be banned though

My dog is actually petrified of balloons as he knows they might burst

Pollaidh · 05/11/2021 14:22

I'm really glad they're harder to buy now. I have C-PTSD and late October/early November is a month of torture for me because they trigger flashbacks and make my PTSD worse for weeks. Nightmares, shaking, jumpier in the day time too etc.

When I know there are shows scheduled, I can to some extent prepare - make sure I'm somewhere safe, have DH on hand in case it gets too much, take meds etc. The random garden fireworks are in some ways worse because they're random and unexpected and I can't guard against them.

SecretKeeper1 · 05/11/2021 14:23

I wish they would, horrible things that damage wildlife.

Back to fireworks - they should only sell the silent ones to the general public.
