To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

It is a pity, that the little back garden bonfire nights are not so much a thing these days, I am an oldie, and we always had a few fireworks for family stuff, and I dont ever remember people having any problems. Children were never allowed to light any fireworks then.

In recent years,in a town,nearest to me now, the fire brigade, are always on alert on bonfire night, ready to attend to fires started with fireworks being thrown about, at cars, in peoples gardens, put through peoples letter boxes, and thrown at cats and dogs etc.

It is usually the behaviour of some youths wandering about, and seems to be their idea of a fun night.

In another place where I lived at one time, a group of older school boys burnt down an elderly mans shed in his little back garden on bonfire night.

And… our local fire and ambulance services are on standby this weekend. The properly organised displays have been cancelled (because Covid / money) so they’re expecting a lot of numpty related incidents.

EatYourVegetables · 05/11/2021 14:28

I have a lovely fireworks screensaver on my computer. If all you want is pretty lights I suggest you download it.

anon12345anon · 05/11/2021 14:28

@NothingSafe

Good. They shouldn't be sold to the general public anyway.
Totally agree......
dresstokillmytime · 05/11/2021 14:29

@Motherdare

I don’t want to go to an organised display. My children are too young, I don’t want to spend several hours in the cold in a crowded place, being fleeced for candy floss, burgers, glow sticks etc waiting for the actual fireworks fo begin.

I don’t need a spectacular display. I want to let them off at 6pm not midnight. I also hate loud bangers going off all night, that’s not what I’m seeking to do.

So you set your few fireworks off at 6, someone else at 6.30 etc etc

There we go, a whole fucking night of bangs. That's why it should be organised displays only and preferably not in residential areas.

People can train and train their dogs but many will still be terrified. As for other pets, anyone tried to train a cat? 😄
Why should I have to medicate my well trained but still petrified dog because you want fireworks?

It's not just about pets. Children get frightened and woken up, adults can find them scary too. It's antisocial and needs to be banned.

BoredZelda · 05/11/2021 14:30

You've probably left it a bit too late, there were plenty the other day when I was in the range and in the supermarket.

We've got some. I'm not too bothered about the local dog owners who let their dogs bark incessantly, every day, all year, and let their dogs run about our estate off lead which terrifies my daughter, who claim I absolutely must be considerate to their poor dogs and not let off fireworks. They can absolutely fuck off.

Pascal80 · 05/11/2021 14:30

It's been going on here for days and nights, with debris lying about the farming countryside where they have been setting them off. Disgusting. I'm in a tiny place - they are coming from outside to do this here. I wish fireworks were banned from sale to the public, honestly.

HeadNorth · 05/11/2021 14:37

We've just had COP26. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets. Do we need to persist with them (or indeed with 'burn a catholic day')?

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2021 14:38

It's not just dogs 🙄 - other pets and wildlife are frightened too.

DD is autistic and has learning disabilities and spends most of November frightened.

Pollaidh · 05/11/2021 14:40

In response to someone who thought there would be ways to mitigate PTSD-related problems with loud bangs, unfortunately whilst there are PTSD treatments such as EMDR, PET and T-CBT, in my experience after hundreds of hours of treatment, at the cost of thousands of pounds, they help but don't necessarily cure.

Most of my C-PTSD is under control following treatment. One of the few things that can still trigger it badly is random loud bangs from fireworks.

And also PTSD is not only combat-related or people who have been caught up in bombings or shootings. Rape and car accidents, birth trauma and cancer are amongst other causes of PTSD. (Because of the way PTSD works there doesn't need to be a loud bang involved in the trauma for loud noises to become a trigger.) And PTSD really can happen to anyone, however mentally healthy they are before hand.

I used to bloody love fireworks.

5thnonblonde · 05/11/2021 14:41

My dog doesn’t mind them, it’s not like all dogs can’t handle it

And? What difference does that make for the ones that are frightened? Other wildlife etc?
Greenhillfaraway · 05/11/2021 14:44

They've just started here. It's 2.43pm. I've never lived in a place where hearing fireworks randomly throughout the year was fairly normal.

At midnight on Tuesday, some fucker decided to let off a boxful of them at midnight about 50m from my bedroom window. That was appreciated Angry

5thnonblonde · 05/11/2021 14:45

Are we gonna ban everything that scares wildlife then? My neighbour’s did loses it over the bin lorry but I’d rather we didn’t suspend kerbside collections on his account

LiveForeverHappily · 05/11/2021 14:50

They should be banned, so many people and animals are negatively affected by them.

LiveForeverHappily · 05/11/2021 14:51

5thnonblonde

There’s an obvious benefit to rubbish being collected...not so much fireworks. Silly, stupid argument.

RaginaPhalange · 05/11/2021 14:52

Good.

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine
It's not just one day though, it's been going on for weeks. Firefighters are also more likely to get attacked, fireworks thrown at them etc.

Roselilly36 · 05/11/2021 14:52

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine

Goodness, it's one day of the year. Come on people. By that logic they should stop selling anything that could frighten people. Clown costumes, balloons, etc.

Aldi had some last year. I'm sure they did

It’s not one day of the year though is it, we heard some fireworks, on Halloween, last night, tonight usually the big event, but theres an organised display going on Sat, and then of course NYE! I feel sorry for my neighbours with pets, I really do. I expect the display fireworks will be really loud.

One of those things is 'fun to look at for some people'. One of them is 'an essential waste management process'.
takealettermsjones · 05/11/2021 14:56

So much ridiculous "logic" on this thread 😂

Yes, that's the same. Well done.
NothingSafe · 05/11/2021 14:59

@Worldwide2

I have never heard fireworks going off for weeks or months? I'm not trying to cause an argument but i genuinely haven't heard any fireworks unless bonfire/new years eve?
Ah, you're lucky - we've had them for a few weeks here already, mixture of random ones being let off at stupid times and bigger displays from people's gardens. As soon as they appear in shops, that's it. Someone let one off on the canal in broad daylight the other day and it hit someone's boat, which is brilliant Hmm

Last year it pretty much continued at random til a few days after New Year.

GaolBhoAlba · 05/11/2021 14:59

We're going to a big display in the park - food stalls, funfair etc. Im really excited, there was nothing last year. I dont think fireworks should be available for general sale; go to a display.

julieca · 05/11/2021 15:02

We are going to a friends where we are setting off fireworks.

oakleaffy · 05/11/2021 15:03

I understand that when you were little that they were fun
Kids like sparklers… But I much preferred a few pretty little ones in the garden to mass displays.
They are very noisy these days.
Too many Mortars.
