To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

@Motherdare

I have to put up with all sorts of noise pollution where I live. My opposite neighbours have moved out of their house and left the rest of us dealing with the terrible noise of their builders excavating a basement. This after a year of renovating the entire four storey house from top to bottom. Are they also unobservant selfish twats (to quote someone above?).

I have dogs fouling my gate post multiple times every day. Some owners stand there watching me getting into my car and still leave their precious pooch to “do what comes naturally” on my property. My next-door neighbour lets his dog into the garden on the dot of 10pm every single night for a good old bark at the squirrels. Every night.

My other neighbours have gardeners who come with leaf-blowers and make the most soul-destroying noise for hours at a time, to the point I have to pack up my work and leave the house to find some peace.

Yet a few sparklers and low-level fireworks for small children at tea-time once a year has everyone up in arms? Get a grip.

That's true. There are a lot of selfish animal owners and others out there. They soon jump up and down if you want a few for your children once a year though. Ignore them and buy a couple at Tesco or Lidl. I think people just love to moan this time of year.

New Year's Eve in many countries doesn't get the same amount of moaning though

That’s a fineable offence. So are saying fireworks are fine because some things that are illegal happen? Confused

justanoldhack · 05/11/2021 13:31

Fireworks should be banned. They are anti social, seriously upset pets and wildlife, they wake up sleeping children, they aren't environmentally friendly. They look shit too when it's not done as part of a professional display. So yes, YABU

REDHERO · 05/11/2021 13:31

@RachelHasThoseInBurgundy

Where I am in NI you need a license to let off fireworks. It doesn’t stop people setting them off at home. The fee for setting off for an audience of fewer than 100 people is only £30 and often people just don’t bother with a license. I see loads of home “displays” from my house. All shit. Not sure why they waste the money as the council display is visible from the whole town and is much better.
The thing is one person's "waste of money" is another's enjoyment. Things people waste money on or for enjoyment tattoos, lip fillers, fireworks, alcohol, cigarettes, hundreds of clothes, shoes, handbags, make up, animals, etc etc - get the idea?

Oh, don’t be confused, I’m not suggesting fireworks should be banned because they’re a waste of money. There are far better reasons, all detailed on this thread, for which to ban them.

HeartsAndClubs · 05/11/2021 13:33

This isn’t just about the animals and the noise though is it? Even though that is also a major factor.

It’s about the increase in pressure on the emergency services when twats with no common sense don’t use them safely causing injury to themselves and others.

Fireworks being thrown at cars/put through people’s letterboxes/thrown at animals.

The increased work of the fire brigade because people set their lawns/fences etc etc on fire because the ones they get hold of aren’t suitable for the space they’re in.

And how about the impact on the environment? The wildlife?the pollution, given we’re all supposed to be embracing action to prevent/reverse climate change fireworks doesn’t exactly fit with that mold.

REDHERO · 05/11/2021 13:34

@Watchingyou2sleezes

I don't buy fireworks, actually support banning sale to the general public and as for as I'm concerned seen one display seen them all so don't go to organised displays.

But the finger wagging of pet owners really gets on my tits.
"Harry" (my year round yapping little bastard turd factory) "gets really scared by them".
Just.Fuck.Off.

Brilliant. The yappy little bastard turd factory - love it.

I'm not confused dear. As you said "Not sure why they waste the money as the council display is visible from the whole town and is much better." There you go my dear.

So basically, just because you hear day to day noise and a local dog shits outside your gate, that gives you an excuse to cause them and other animals and wildlife great distress? Aren't you lovely...

And again, as multiple people here have said, it's not JUST about a couple of pet dogs. Veterans, the elderly, those with sensory issues, PTSD, learning and emotional support needs ALL suffer greatly for at least 5 months of the year because selfish people like you can't help themselves and desperately need the bangs and pretty sparkles. Perhaps if you actually read your own thread you would realise that?

It's also not JUST for half an hour once a year, which you should know given how much attention you seem to pay to environmental noise!

SingYouBackToSleep · 05/11/2021 13:38

It’s not just animals though.

My friend is a carer. She’s going into work tonight, for no pay, to help out as so many of the elderly people in the care home she works in are frightened by fireworks.

Listener2021 · 05/11/2021 13:38

They should be banned for public sale (so should helium balloons and sky lanterns).

The little boy(sn) near by is absolutely terrified of the bangs. And also of the idea of the bangs.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 05/11/2021 13:38

Grin what are you saying?

Scarlettpixie · 05/11/2021 13:39

Yabu.

You can have a bonfire/fire pit, toast some marshmallows and light a few sparklers if you must. No need for loud fireworks which upset pets, wildlife, small children, people with ptsd etc.

Personally I don’t think they should be sold to the public and public displays limited to the 5th with silent fireworks and the rubbish cleaned up properly afterwards. Good on sainsburys for not selling them this year. Hopefully others will follow.

Angliski · 05/11/2021 13:40

Brother got badly burned this week from a misfiring one at home. Just saying…

Watchingyou2sleezes · 05/11/2021 13:43

@RichardMarxisinnocent

Are you still bleating?
I don't care about your phobias. That's down to you to manage.
You jumped on my tongue in cheek post about dogs and made it about people, or more precisely about poor hard done by you.

Now I've got someone else that cant read claiming to be veteran and bleating on too.

I made it very clear that it wasn't for the likes of me to tell a combat veteran how to handle stress from fireworks. I've seen others have mentioned other types that can struggle with fireworks.
I'll now add in every person that ever existed. Happy now.

On fireworks my conscience is clear. Never bought one, never set one off, haven't been to a display in years. Have zero interest in Fireworks. Have zero interest in your phobias.

Hope that's cleared it up for you.

Bolynne · 05/11/2021 13:43

I think a few sparklers and a couple small fireworks is fine. I wish my neighbours are as a considerate as you. Round here they were going off all last night and I woke up to some going off at 1am! Also there have been some idiots setting them off about an hour. In the middle of the day fgs.

SingYouBackToSleep · 05/11/2021 13:43

Is he ok?

I know 2 people who have been badly injured. One had severe burns to his face and chest. He was a twat fucking around with fireworks as a teen. The other got hurt at an organised display when a firework went into the crowd. She has a scar on the side of her face.

Worldwide2 · 05/11/2021 13:46

I have never heard fireworks going off for weeks or months? I'm not trying to cause an argument but i genuinely haven't heard any fireworks unless bonfire/new years eve?

HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 13:48

Lucky you. I wish I could say the same.

This year the legislation changed in Scotland so it hasn't been as bad but last year and previous years were ridiculous.

Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 13:49

@Worldwide2 You are lucky. We've had them going off for weeks already around us and at the rescue centre where I help out they ask for volunteers to sit with the animals from 6pm to 10pm for the week before and the week after the 5th November. That's how I spent last Saturday evening and I'll be going there tonight and on Sunday to do the same.

Love fireworks and bonfire night. You should still be able to buy them today from Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi, and The range.

One thing I haven’t seen is treacle toffee…….yum
