Aibu to find 17c too cold at home?

Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

DH and I both WFH. Our house is 18 during the day, 20 in the evening and then 17 overnight. We sleep with the bedroom window open as it gets too hot in the bedroom but the rest of the house gets too cold if we turn the heating below 17.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/11/2021 21:35

I have it on 21.

Unless your nipples can cut glass then Mumsnet tends to think its sweltering!

Being cold is the worst. I wear a jumper but that's not gonna keep my nose and hands warm!

Battleofwhocouldcareless · 02/11/2021 21:40

Ours is set to 17.5. I wear lots of layers and sit with blankets in the evening. I would have it warmer but DH is conscious of saving pennies.

KittyBurrito · 02/11/2021 21:42

19.5 in the autumn/winter

gigi556 · 02/11/2021 21:47

I have our thermostat set to 17.5 during the day and 19 in the evening and tbh... it's too cold, but I'm really trying to save energy. I keep boosting it when I get too cold though so I might need to rethink. I'd say 20-21 is optimal for comfort.

Was pleased I'm not alone I having the heating on...

I always love the extremes of the how hot is your house threads. Always entertaining.

I'm afraid we're on the cold side. Our bedroom is 16oc currently, thats with the heating on.

Old house, draughty and rambling. We accept that it's essentially impossible to heat some of the rooms to modern standards. Sadly this includes our bedroom.

We often wake to ice on the inside of the windows, with the heating on. Thermals in bed. I don't object until about 12 degrees, then it's really too cold.

zukiecat · 02/11/2021 21:50

Our situation a couple of years ago was absolutely dire, couldn't afford to put the heating on, so we were beyond freezing in the house, sometimes the temperature was minus a couple of degrees, no hot water either, and it was a dreadful, miserable way to live.

However, a couple of years later, and after a lot of help from the council and SAMH, we moved into a lovely new house. I never want to feel as cold and miserable again, so the heating is set at 22. It feels wonderful to have a nice, warm cosy house!

Lightswitch123 · 02/11/2021 21:50

Set to 25 but that's not the actual room temperature as big rooms. Prob more like 22? Comfortable sitting working in t shirts.

17 -I'd feeeze! If you can't turn it up maybe hot water bottles?

BigButtons · 02/11/2021 21:51

When I got home today at 1pm the thermostat said 15.5. I didn’t turn the heating on- just kept layers on. I am a seriously cold person and have learnt to keep multi layers on all day so my core temp stays steady. I am
Like a Russian doll with layers of clothes.

zukiecat · 02/11/2021 21:53

I should have said that we're on pre-payment meters, so no huge energy bills to pay, we just top up every week.

Kylereese · 02/11/2021 21:53

17 is Baltic. Even if I put layers on the room and my nose just feel cold!

22 for evenings then 18 overnight when need a bit cooler to sleep

SweetPetrichor · 02/11/2021 21:53

We don’t use a thermostat, just heat an hour morning and night just now to keep the damp away. It’s generally around 19-20 in the living areas. We don’t heat the bedrooms though. I use an oil radiator to give extra heat to the attic room cause that’s home to tropical spiders who like it a bit warmer. Ideally I keep that room around 21-22 in winter but as long as it’s not dropping below 20 it’s fine. I’d rather be too cold than too hot, but the pets need warmth.

Ours is on 15 at the moment. We have an old house with barely any insulation so it wouldn't get to 20 even if we had the heating on all day and night 🥲 it struggles to get it up past 16 on these colder days 😭

GrandOld · 02/11/2021 21:59

Thermostat set to 15 degrees here. It's currently showing that it's 17. I'm warm in my PJ'S and slippers. I hate the heat and I hate fake heat even more. So stuffy.

Still have my bedroom window open...

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 02/11/2021 22:00

Anything over 16 is fine. I find over 21 stifling and unpleasant. I can’t visit my SIL who keeps her house at 25 degrees.

I live in a very old and cold house that is impossible to heat fully but we have warm areas: kitchen with its Aga and sitting rooms with wood burners.

Tumbleweed101 · 02/11/2021 22:06

Ours is 20C during day/evening and turned down to 15C overnight.

Tumbleweed101 · 02/11/2021 22:06

Turned to 15C when everyone is out too.

IReallyLikeCrows · 02/11/2021 22:08

17 is definitely too cold for being up and about. I have my heating at 17 overnight, well that's the lowest, if I let it go below that then it takes so much longer to heat up during the day. I go with 20 during the day, generally, although when it gets mad cold I might put it up to 22 or 23 because I hate being cold.

Gastonia · 02/11/2021 22:08

This is a real eye-opener! I can't believe people have the heating turned so high. I didn't realise I was so miserly! Grin

wertheppl · 02/11/2021 22:09

That is Baltic! Mine is set to 20 degrees which is usually ideal. It clicks off at 20.5 which can take it to 21 by time heaters cool down.

Although sometimes I'm over looking at it going really are you at 20, don't feel like it 😂 sometimes I put it off at 19.5 feeling the heat that day.

2319inprogress · 02/11/2021 22:09

Wow I'm really surprised by the answers!

Our thermostat is set for 16 for a couple of hours after dinner, 14.5 earlier in the day & 12 overnight.
I grew up with waking to ice on the inside of my bedroom window so it feels fine to me Grin

Benjispruce5 · 02/11/2021 22:09

I’m in bed with the window open . Heating off now.

SourMilkGhyll · 02/11/2021 22:13

16 degrees here, sitting comfortably watching TV, normal clothes, no jumper!

We have it on 10 degrees over night.

20 degrees is way too hot for me. I love the cold.

userxx · 02/11/2021 22:15

Love fresh air whilst sleeping.
