Aibu to find 17c too cold at home?

Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

16 to 17 for a few hours late afternoon early evening then off. Have only just started to do that. I can’t stand a stuffy overheated house.
Windows open in bedroom for air at night.

saleorbouy · 02/11/2021 22:18

Depends if you have money to burn? Every degree higher is a bigger bill and greater effect on the environment.
If you're wearing plenty of clothes then raise the temp.
It cracks me up though when people lounge about in T-shirts and shorts in the winter and complain the house is cold and then the bills are high.
I was always told as a child, put on a jumper it's already paid for!

Titsywoo · 02/11/2021 22:20

We have ours at 18 and don't feel cold at all (still in shorts and tshirt). I like warmth but feel boiling if the heat goes above 21 and DS has the radiator off in his room as he gets hot really easily.

TallTrees78 · 02/11/2021 22:23

I live in Scotland and never have heating on overnight even in middle of winter as find it too stuffy. I grew up in a old cold house though so am maybe just used to it.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 02/11/2021 22:27

We never have our heating on at night either. And we sleep with the bedroom window open too (except if it’s properly stormy).

PeterIsACockwomble · 02/11/2021 22:27

YABU, OP.

16 degrees is what I would regard as a comfortable temperature (if I were sedentary, wearing leggings and a thin cashmere jumper). This is in an ancient house with leaky windows and doors. 17 is on the 'getting too warm' side. Anything above that is unbearable.

My bedroom is its own micro-climate, as I have the radiator turned off, the door shut all day, and the window open. I don't know what the temperature is in there, but it's "freezing", according to the teenagers.

XH and I used to disagree about the thermostat. He thought 20 degrees was 'normal'. It used to make me feel ill. I now disagree with the teenagers for the same reason (boys and girls alike).

We have an Aga, so they can sit on that if they are cold.

emmylousings · 02/11/2021 22:27

About 17-18 here generally. Bit tight really. It's my upbringing. DS always wacks it up soon as I'm out. Bless him.

I could never have it on overnight. I do have a very thick duvet but being cool is much better for sleep. The heating comes on at 6.30 so the house has a bit of warmth when I get up at 7.15.
listsandbudgets · 02/11/2021 22:29

We must all be warm blooded. Unless it gets properly cold outside we usually prefer about 16

missbunnyrabbit · 02/11/2021 22:34

Mine is on 17. It's chilly.

BoredPandas · 02/11/2021 22:39

We’re in Northern Scotland and don’t have heating on overnight, ours goes off at 10pm and we sleep with the bedroom windows open, we do have a thick duvet but I sleep in shorts and a vest top - I hate having to wear full pj’s in bed. Like others on this thread I grew up in a cold house where we breathed on the windows to melt the ice on the inside in the mornings. When the DC were at home we had heaters in their rooms that were on overnight. Our heating is set at 22 during the day but we have log burners on most days so it never kicks in now.

gogohm · 02/11/2021 22:40

Mi e is set to 18 on the ground floor, living room is on the floor above so a bit warmer

southernbelles · 02/11/2021 22:42

My thermostat currently shows 15.5 which is about right for me, I cannot stand being too warm! I grew up in a house where the heating was on almost year round & the radiators were genuinely scalding to the touch. Now when I go to visit my family it is utterly stifling, I'll be in a vest or dress & they will be sat there in dressing gowns & thick blankets, I don't understand it! I'm most comfortable at mine when the thermostat shows about 15-16 & I'll be in shorts & a vest, in the evening I'll sometimes have a very light blanket.

Now that I'm 7 months pregnant I feel the heat even more! The other parents at the school gates are in boots, jumpers & coats & I'm still in cropped trousers, skirts or dresses 😅😅 I still have the fan at night too & kick the duvet off as can't bear being hot 🥵

GreenWhiteViolet · 02/11/2021 22:48

I like 16-17 in winter. Others in my house don't, so I keep the radiators off in my bedroom and workspace most of the time. 20 or above feels stuffy and uncomfortable and makes me cough, so if I'm not in control of the temperature I end up opening windows.

Nogoodusername · 02/11/2021 23:09

19-20oc is perfect for me

verymiddleaged · 02/11/2021 23:12

I have 21 unless it is really cold outside when I will have it higher.

Coffee4Queen · 02/11/2021 23:20

I’m in a new build flat in London with incredible insulation. I don’t usually switch the heating on until the end of December or January. The thermostat currently says 23.7. I don’t think I can ever move to another property. I won’t be able to handle a cold home which is anything below 20 for me! Blush

greedygut · 02/11/2021 23:23

22° when we are home daytime / evening but 18° bedtime or if we are out , actually like it quite cool at night

Sally090807 · 02/11/2021 23:34

I’m not that old but remember in the winter living in a bungalow with single glazed windows that would have ice on the inside during the colder months.

Hekk · 02/11/2021 23:37

You're obviously young and skinny! I'm never cold these days thanks menopause and weight gain Grin

I'd really recommend down though if you can find some ethically sourced. I have a skinny little jacket that was about £35 and keeps me really warm on the rare occasion I'm cold.

TerriblyNaice · 03/11/2021 00:52

@zippidydooday

Genuinely never seen the thermostat temperature register more than 18 degrees.
Someone here was having the same problem. It's a simple fix if that is what's wrong with yours. forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6309314/central-heating-problem-and-unexpected-cause-fix#latest

My in laws have theirs set year round to a balmy 12c

We stayed for a week over new year once and I begged to go home after sticking it out for 5 days. I've never felt so cold to the bone for such an extended period.

ivykaty44 · 03/11/2021 06:17

I used to work in an office that had the heating set really high. I found over time I adjusted to the heat & when I got home I’d feel cold. I would increase the thermostat temperature at home.

When I stopped working in that office I was able to lower the temperature at home the following winter, as I wasn’t “ feeling the cold “ one out of the hot environment

ivykaty44 · 03/11/2021 06:29

@zukiecat curious as to how much it costs on a prepaid meter? With a new house it should be well insulated so be economical to keep at 22

Namechangedox · 03/11/2021 06:31

I have mine on 23 17 would be freezing
