Aibu to find 17c too cold at home?

Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

Porcupineintherough · 02/11/2021 20:36

Most of the rooms are at 17 or 18 but we heat the front room (the one we sit in in the evening) if it's really cold. Right now though its blankets.

Marvellousmadness · 02/11/2021 20:37

Haha I have this debate with my partner every winter.

Buy some thermal underwear. This is a life changer

toconclude · 02/11/2021 20:38

@NannyR

17-18 is just right for me, my thermostat is showing 14 at the home and I'm not uncomfortably cold, just wearing normal clothes. Everyone has different tolerance levels of temperature - I get very uncomfortable if it's too hot (>23), and really don't enjoy heatwaves.
This. Currently 17 degrees, heating off and I'm comfy in two layers. But I'm not OP.
StillWalking · 02/11/2021 20:38

Ours is set at 22 and DH often sneaks it up to 24!! He's the nesh one in our house. 17 is too cold ......

ivykaty44 · 02/11/2021 20:38

@Dominicains I used to have a thermostat on the hall wall in my old house. Got a remote one I could take with me, then id shut the door of the room I was in so it was ice and warm without heating the rest f the house

Hollyhead · 02/11/2021 20:38

About 19 is perfect for me, anything over 20.5 feels far too hot.

bloodywhitecat · 02/11/2021 20:39

Ours used to be set to 18° with the living room temperature higher because of the log burner but now DH has cancer he feels the cold so much more so it is often set to 22° (it is too warm for me but it is easier for me to cool down than it is for DH to warm up).

Gastonia · 02/11/2021 20:44

We don't have our heating on yet (southeast), and the hall thermostat says 15. I think people just get used to colder temperatures if they have the heating on less. Plus I have a lovely fluffy blanket over my knees at the moment. I am slightly overweight though, so maybe my extra fat keeps me warm Grin

Monkeytennis97 · 02/11/2021 20:49

Ours averages around 17-18. I find 19+ too hot. DH would love it if house was 16Shock

BlueMongoose · 02/11/2021 20:51

17 is on the chilly side if you're just sitting around. We keep ours at 18, though some parts of the house can be somewhat lower than that as it's a bit rambling, and we keep it a little lower overnight. But in the evening we do have it a bit higher for the last hour or so we're up, as at that time we just sit and watch TV or read.
The rest of the time, if anyone is cold they either have to put more woollies/thermals on or do some physical work, like housework or DIY. Grin
Seriously, though, 16 is generally thought of as the minimum for a workplace, 13 if the work is strenuous, and up to 20 if the work isn't.

Anything above about 22 feels like a furnace to me, and would be far too expensive to have in this old house- and not all that good for it anyway. We were advised to keep the house at 17/18 with the central heating, and just heat rooms locally by alternative means when we were in them if we felt too cold.

Smilerjone · 02/11/2021 20:52

22 here

mydogisthebest · 02/11/2021 20:52

I don't think 17 is very warm at all. I certainly would not be walking around outside in a sundress or T shirt at that temperature.

Indoors it's an ok temp if you are moving around but not for sitting for any length of time. We have our thermostat set for 21 in the evening.

Thankfully we can afford to heat the house. No way am I wearing tons of layers or having to sit with blankets over my legs

CambsAlways · 02/11/2021 20:52

Bloody hell 17 much to cold for us, ours is 21

BlueMongoose · 02/11/2021 20:53

@YearsSinceISawYou

It used to be the case that if it fell to 16, schools and offices would have send people home. I don't know if that is still the case.

21 here...that's as high as it seems to go no matter what it's set to.

I think the old legal limit was scrapped- that's the old Factories Act one, isn't it? Now it's just advisory, IIRC.
Clocktopus · 02/11/2021 20:53

Heating is on yet (NE England) but when it is it'll generally be on 18-20C during the day depending on whether I'm at home, how much activity I'm doing, the weather, etc. When DC are home it does up higher as one of them hates clothes (ASD) so only wears undies and a vest around the house, heating gets cranked up to compensate. We put it higher if its very cold outside and usually its switched off at night because I need to be cold to sleep.

LettertoHermoine · 02/11/2021 20:54

For me there is literally nothing more depressing than a cold house, it's your home, your castle, your haven and I could not live in a cold one. I understand completely that there might be financial implications for some or for others they might be warmed blooded creatures and that is completely different but I can never understand how people would "wait until they can see their breath" before they give in and turn on the heating. It becomes almost like a competition to see who can hold out the longest. Life's too short to be sitting with an eggcup under your nose to catch the drips, especially if you have kids. A Christmas Carol on steroids.
Like the hobs of hell here...and then some.

Firstruleofsoupover · 02/11/2021 20:54

I will certainly be whacking the thermostat up to 20 or 21 when the real cold weather comes, and when necessary the night temp up to 15 or 16. During these not quite winter days, I like to hold off a bit. But yes I sure do appreciate the lovely boiler when we need it.

PostMenWithACat · 02/11/2021 20:55

17 here for most of the house. Have the fire on in the sitting room with the door closed. The whole house doesn't need to be more than 17. The zone for our bedrooms/bathrooms is 20 from 5.30am to 8ish so getting up is toasty.

ichundich · 02/11/2021 20:55

21-22.5 here. I wear a vest, top, fleece + woollen socks over my normal socks and will still feel cold in these at lower temperatures if I am just sitting still.

MissCruellaDeVil · 02/11/2021 20:56

No less than 20* at home!

Notebooksarefabulous · 02/11/2021 20:56

We never put ours on unless the temp dips below 16. Yes atm its true my nose is a wee bit chilly but its not going to kill me. Im wearing a several layers. Actually when I move about to tidy up/cook I take off layers.

It really worries me to see how many people on this thread have their thermostat set at 20 or above.

PinkiOcelot · 02/11/2021 20:57

Ours is currently about 17-18. I’ve just got out the bath and am lying on my bed wrapped in a towel. I’m not cold at all.
I grew up in a house with no central heating and ice on the inside of the windows in the winter.

JamOrMarmaladeOnToast · 02/11/2021 20:57

It was so cold here last night the internet went down It never goes down. Had the heating on at 10 degrees overnight.

TBH it depends if it has been raining outside. It's the only time i feel that the fabric of the house does not heat through. I can live with dry cold (put socks on a fill a hot water bottle) but not when it's been wet out.

I like 18 degrees but then down to about 10degrees at 10pm.

Doesn't help that whoever built this house placed the thermostat opposite a south facing window! Brilliant...Confused

BigButtons · 02/11/2021 20:57

I have no heating on at night

DGFB · 02/11/2021 20:57

21-22 here, I like warmth in the evenings and early mornings. We try to limit bills by not having it on during the day unless desperate (wfh)
