Aibu to find 17c too cold at home?

Apparently I'm crazy for finding 17c too cold.

I'm currently wearing a top, a hoodie and a big blanket/hoodie thing and I still have a cold nose.

Please tell me I'm not crazy and 17c is bloody cold to have it at home. What temp is your perfect temp at home in the evening?

17 in the morning, 18 in the afternoon/evening, off overnight. At this time of year that means the temperature usually drops down to about 15 before the heating comes on at 6.30.

Silkieschickens · 03/11/2021 06:45

Ours is on about 20.5C. Would freeze at 17C.

redandwhite1 · 03/11/2021 06:47

We're on 18.5 but our house is quite old so really contains the heat and is fine for now, might increase to up to 20 if it's below freezing outside

BigButtons · 03/11/2021 07:08

This morning my thermostat said 14. Am wrapped in a nice fluffy dressing gown and super warm socks and it’s actually fine.

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 07:57

17 here in the living room this morning and 12 in the bathroom, I can’t be bothered putting the heating on just for the bathroom so I’ll just make sure I’m wearing slippers when I go in there and it’ll warm up a bit during the day.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 03/11/2021 08:01

17 is far too cold !!! I put mine on 19-22 depending on time of day .

suckingonchillidogs · 03/11/2021 08:04

I stayed with a friend this weekend who likes the heating on at 22 degrees even at nighttime. I was hanging out a window at 3am gulping in fresh air, I'd rather be too cold than too hot anyday.

BettyJDavies · 03/11/2021 08:06

Yes, are you trying to kill the planet

ichundich · 03/11/2021 08:07

This thread is hilarious. Judging by it, it wonder why we install heating in British houses at all! Thermostat setting and actual room temperature are not necessarily the same. Mine thermostat is set to 25 (!) but the living room temp is never over 21.

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 08:33

@ichundich if your thermostat is in the living room then it isn’t working properly. Is it a digital one or one (with just a dial?

SirChenjins · 03/11/2021 08:34

Does it really matter what your thermostat says? Surely the main thing is that you’re comfortable.

SueSaid · 03/11/2021 08:38

Ours is set at 23 and I often boost it to 25. I'd hate 17c.

Oblomov21 · 03/11/2021 08:45

Ours is set to 19.
Why did you do this to yourself? You know 17 is too cold for you. Seems silly.

ChocolateGingers · 03/11/2021 08:48

You need radiator thermostats @Coffeeandteevee

That means you can set the thermostat in your hall or wherever, and adjust the temp of each room, accordingly.

Ours is set at 22C but we turn down the rads in the rooms we don't use much or where we prefer it cooler.

17C is ridiculous.

TitoMojito · 03/11/2021 08:49

If you're cold, you're cold. No reasonable or unreasonable about it. It's your body that determines if you are chilly.

CornishGem1975 · 03/11/2021 08:50

I've not even had the heating on yet!

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 08:51

I think it must matter @SirChenjins as I think there is a psychological element where people see 17 on their thermostat in the winter and perceive it as cold. Outdoor temperatures are only above 17 for about 2-3 months a year and I’m sure people cope going outside in June without their noses dripping with cold, and don’t have their heating on in June either but rather have the windows open!

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 08:52

Us neither @CornishGem1975, and we still have the summer duvet on!

ColettesEarrings · 03/11/2021 08:54

Our thermostat is set to 16°, that gives an actual air temperature of around 20°. I've no idea why it's calibrated that way, but below that it's too cold for me.

ivykaty44 · 03/11/2021 08:54

@TitoMojito most people can adjust a few degrees. The very old, babies and menopausal woman are not able to though

ivykaty44 · 03/11/2021 08:56

Mine thermostat is set to 25 (!) but the living room temp is never over 21.

where do you put your thermostat ?

SirChenjins · 03/11/2021 08:57

@TuftyMarmoset

I think it must matter *@SirChenjins* as I think there is a psychological element where people see 17 on their thermostat in the winter and perceive it as cold. I disagree - I think most people are quite capable of adjusting the thermostats up or down, depending whether they feel cold or hot.
mydogisthebest · 03/11/2021 08:59

@PinkiOcelot

Ours is currently about 17-18. I’ve just got out the bath and am lying on my bed wrapped in a towel. I’m not cold at all. I grew up in a house with no central heating and ice on the inside of the windows in the winter.
I too grew up in a house with no central heating and ice on the inside of the windows. I left home at 22 and shortly after the council put central heating into my parents' house.

I can remember dressing and undressing huddled in front of the electric fire in my bedroom.

That is why I am grateful to live in a nice warm house now. It's no fun being cold.

Our heating comes on at 6,30am and goes off at 9am. It is usually off all day and I am warm enough pottering around doing housework. If I get cold I turn it back on.

It then comes on at 4pm and goes off at 10pm

It is not on overnight. Our bedroom radiator is turned down as both me and DH don't like the bedroom hot. We use a 4.5 tog duvet all year round and both sleep naked

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 09:09

I’m not saying they aren’t @SirChenjins. What I’m suggesting is that people seem to feel colder during the winter compared to summer even when the ambient temperature is the same.

SirChenjins · 03/11/2021 09:16

This is quite a good explanation of why we feel colder - and interesting that the psychological element is more to do with light than what's on the thermostat
