Sister's boyfriend and his karaoke obsession.

Sister has a boyfriend who I don't like but put up with to keep her happy. They are coming for Christmas staying with our parents. For the first time we are at ours for Christmas which I am pleased about. He has apparently paid to hire a karaoke machine for Christmas day. I hate karaoke I would have to leave the house for the day. He is planning on setting up in my hallway which is the main access to the rest of the house. The thought of not being able to talk for listening to him singing droney songs makes me mad. Ive told him no he is pissed off now he and my sister who I do want to see aren't coming. She is pissed off at me because I said no politely. I just said it'll be too much. Apparently it was a special treat and he has paid hundreds that he can't get back.
Unreasonable behaviour on my part or not?

Neither of them drive!

It’s going to be a pretty short-lived career as Mr karaoke Man if he can’t have karaoke parties in his small flat and he can’t drive Grin

What did you say to her?

HappyDays40 · 03/11/2021 19:04

I might actually write a rubbish karaoke song and sing it.... Good plan. To be fair his mate that he is planning this with drives. The plan is that he supplies the "rig" (technical term obvs) and his mate supplies the van. The mate is not available over xmas.....but they think I am.

I just listened in disbelief for ages and said I couldn't help. The sulking has commenced again. Apparently I'm ruining his chances of earning a living.....hope he did that himself by not applying for any jobs.

They live in another country? When do they want you to hire this van? Is it a separate time to the Xmas one?

SmileyClare · 03/11/2021 19:14

I think you're going to be stuck housing this huge bit of kit in your hall indefinitely, especially if they only have a tiny flat?
Clearly he's buying the bloody thing, not renting it. A karaoke machine is not just for Christmas..

Sorry Op but this thread is great entertainment. Xmas Smile

Skysblue · 03/11/2021 19:15

If he’s coming to yours, he should have checked that you were happy to have karaoke. It’s not hard to send a text message asking is it? Instead he decided to book it and then back you into a corner where you’d feel you have to give in to his plans for the day.

Well done for refusing to be manipulated like that. He sounds like a jerk.

SmileyClare · 03/11/2021 19:16

He'll probably make it up to you with a signed compilation of his greatest hits for Christmas.

HappyDays40 · 03/11/2021 19:17

No they can hire here and apparently there is a drive on ferry between Christmas and New year......such a shame I'll be back at workWink

@SmileyClare glad you are happy it's making me laugh too. It's just odd. Can I get you a copy too?

Out of interest... dangers of a small world and all that... are his initials PM? Cos if they are your DSis needs to run like the bloody wind!

stbxPoisonousSILs DB is the same. You have described him, his current living arrangements, etc, to a T. Surely there cannot be two of them? That's too bloody scary!

Scout2016 · 03/11/2021 19:30

Why can't he buy a machine in the country he lives in?
Cheeky buggers. I wonder if your sister volunteered you and is now pissed off you won't go along with it and it looks daft on her. Sort of thing some of my family would do.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 03/11/2021 19:31

Very intrusive on his part but your sister should have known this. Christmas Day Karoake - your poor neighbours. What about New Year's Eve instead if at all.

hashbrownsandwich · 03/11/2021 19:36

Send your BIL round here please!

PreparationPreparationPrep · 03/11/2021 19:42

@HappyDays40

Elvis has left the building thank you very much. He could take it to the bottom of the garden. Its very boggy.
Poor neighbours I know, but maybe he can go in your shed. A compilation mix of Xmas background crooning might be nice 😊
HappyDays40 · 03/11/2021 19:55

@HoardngSamphireSaurus. Not unless he has changed it. They have been together about 12 months.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 03/11/2021 20:22

Oh, the one I know wouldn't change his name. He is an M, and Ms are special Smile !!

And I think his newish GF has only been enthralled for about 6 months.

So, there are two of them? I am not sure I can cope with that thought Grin

Juniper68 · 03/11/2021 22:47

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar

Not being able to drive is to your advantage I think, since you unfortunately won't have the time to help them in any way. I can imagine them staggering onto the ferry piled high with equipment, like sherpas. Grin

Whereismumhiding3 · 04/11/2021 04:09

It's amazing how far this is going....

It started with boyfriend of DSis wanting to bring large unwanted Kareoke machine to your house and swamp out Xmas day..., to suddenly you have been volunteered to spend hours driving / on off ferry in a van they are hiring for you to collect them and said karaoke machine as part of this boyfriends business.

I guess boyfriend is expecting you to do driving van on Xmas eve or a few days before Xmas (in between work , DCs care and Xmas preparation)
And expecting to store monstrous Karaoke machine at your house whilst they are visiting parents. In your hallway. ???

Glad you are saying No, as Dsis's boyfriend is becoming a ridiculous CF. I

Whereismumhiding3 · 04/11/2021 04:18

Just realised it's an 'if they like it, they are expecting you to drive it back to their flat' (overseas)

So ... boyfriend also wants to leave large Kate old machine in your hallways from Xmas day until they go hone and you to drive van and then onto ferry with machine to take them hone... presumably quite a few days after Xmas.. ?!

I imagine he'll try to arrange a few gigs whilst they are here too... and rope you into being his roadie...

sbhydrogen · 04/11/2021 04:23

Goodness me, what a wind up! 🤣

Surely.

HappyDays40 · 04/11/2021 04:34

Sadly not a wind up. Believe me or not but this is one of a very odd series of requests that takes the biscuit. I could see you would think it a wind up if id actually contented to any of the sorry charadeGrin
Its just typical CF behaviour. The first time I met the man my sister was in the UK visiting him they met up in the home town I still live in. I agreed to take them back to the hotel they were staying in which was on the way back to mine. The next day I got a phone call at avout 10 am asking me to drive him back to his home town 45 miles away coz he had missed his 10 o clock train and there wasn't another till 10.45 am. He got arsey because I wouldn't come out of work. Thus is the tyoe if self centred idiit he is. Grin

HappyDays40 · 04/11/2021 04:36

Unless he us trying to wind me up???? Akthough my sister appears genuinely upset and mystified by the fact I won't help.

OP posts:
Marvellousmadness · 04/11/2021 06:01

How about just wearing earplugs.
Or just unplug the karaoke after 2 hrs

Or ..
You could just suck it up in the holiday spirit (and join in even )Grin

TokyoTammy · 04/11/2021 10:15

But don't you know OP he's going to be a star and you're holding him back?? he'll remember all the little people when he's made it!

Don't do it, he sounds like a entitled prat and you'll just open the door to more craziness in the future.

HereticFanjo · 04/11/2021 10:23

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar

Just when you think you've heard all the worst Christmas guest stories, along comes karaoke man. Grin Grin
