Sister's boyfriend and his karaoke obsession.

Sister has a boyfriend who I don't like but put up with to keep her happy. They are coming for Christmas staying with our parents. For the first time we are at ours for Christmas which I am pleased about. He has apparently paid to hire a karaoke machine for Christmas day. I hate karaoke I would have to leave the house for the day. He is planning on setting up in my hallway which is the main access to the rest of the house. The thought of not being able to talk for listening to him singing droney songs makes me mad. Ive told him no he is pissed off now he and my sister who I do want to see aren't coming. She is pissed off at me because I said no politely. I just said it'll be too much. Apparently it was a special treat and he has paid hundreds that he can't get back.
Unreasonable behaviour on my part or not?

Who hires a karaoke machine to someone else’s house? The guy’s an idiot.
Yanbu. It’ll cause noise pollution for the other neighbours with him blaring out last bloody Christmas.

This thread has renewed my love of MN, I would appreciate an Xmas day update! Grin

Whereismumhiding3 · 03/11/2021 07:39

As it's your house, even if he turned up with it without asking as a done deal, you could always turn it off after half an hour , saying it's too loud and that's enough of that now, as we can't hear ourselves talk and I have a headache.

And I kinda like Karaoke in small doses if everyone else is into it/ drunk/ singing along for part of an evening (couple hours). But stuck in the hallway, only one person singing endlessly and no one else liking it, doesn't sound fun at all! Poor poor neighbours too...

Cheerbear23 · 03/11/2021 07:56
@Cam2020 he has paid quite a lot for it I think. There would honestly be no realistic space for it and I do have a real aversion to karaoke.

My sister is irritated coz im not budging. I just know what he is like. My son had a birthday party and he kept singing while all the kids were eating. He did a crooned version of Happy Birthday.....I cringed a LOT!
The way we do things in my family is that the host does everything food drinks the full day. I just wanted to spend time chatting with my family whi I saw very little of last year.
I told my sister to take it to his family.....they won't have it eitherSmile
God the crooned happy birthday …. Cringe!
It’s about him showing off isn’t it? He wants to show off and his singing will dominate the day, well good for you that you’ve said no! You’re not unreasonable as his own family have said no too!! That tells you all you need to know.
I think it’s good you’ve had a backbone and put a stop to it. I would hate it.

@HappyDays40

TBH I think the money spent is a red herring. Every reputable company offer a some elements of cancellation. I can't imagine what he has paid hundreds for just for one day. This all about him no body else in the family like karaoke and just because our idea of a nice day is eating, drinking and chatting doesn't mean that I am trying to be controlling or a killjoy. I know that once we get him on it he would be the only one singing. I'm not going to be manipulated into having it there, he hired it without thought to anyone but himself and if he is sulking then he can be a giant baby elsewhere. I'm due to speak to my sister later.
I was intrigued as to what kind of karaoke set up you get if you need to pay £100s just to hire it, and it's a monstrosity! You'd need a hall at least the size of a typical living room for it to work.

And who pays 100% in two months advance on a non-refundable basis before even mentioning it to the host? At best he's a clueless idiot, at worst, a selfish, manipulative prick.

SmileyClare · 03/11/2021 08:46

Arg from Towie aha ha ha Grin brilliant, turning up squeezed into a slightly too small shiny jacket and the bow tie.

Sorry Op but this whole thing has the potential for comedy gold. His slow crooned version of Happy Birthday when your ds and his friends were eating cake? So awful it's funny. Grin
Do none of the family find him hilarious and give him a friendly ribbing about his bloody singing?

I can't help wondering if your sister encouraged him? He must have run the idea past her before ordering the machine? Maybe she replied "Aw baby, that's a lovely idea, I'm sure my sister will like that" with a glint in her eye.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/11/2021 08:51

@HappyDays40

my sister is irritated coz I'm not budging

well, people can get very upset when you don't let you use them

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/11/2021 08:52

ffs

*when you don't LET THEM USE YOU

Funnylittlefloozie · 03/11/2021 09:00

I've still got Friday Night Dinner in my head... maybe you could borrow a caravan and he could set up his karaoke in there. He could croon happily to himself all day, and the rest of you could get on with having a lovely Christmas together, with the added comedy gold of having a Frank Sinatra impersonator in a box on the drive!

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 03/11/2021 10:12

Sadly I think Dparents will now offer to host at theirs to “keep the peace” and the dreaded karaoke machine . DSis is staying with them as base in the country, they are hardly likely to be happy with them staying in their house whilst they go off to OPs house.
I do t think this is going to end well although I don’t blame OP at all and would have done the same . DSis and particularly partner are the CF

I love that this thread has an OP who has her feet on the ground and we can cheer on a share a laugh with. Grin

Threewheeler1 · 03/11/2021 11:27

Oh my god, I'd rather have that dick Piers Corbyn and his loudhaler in the lounge than that on Christmas Day.
A big, fat, firm NO. He's a proper bellend.

LaetitiaASD · 03/11/2021 11:57

@Namechangedforthethousandthtim

He's tried to do a nice and fun thing and you've spoiled it by being controlling and a killjoy. It's not all about you? You could compromise.
And you know that for a fact because you're in his head?
Juniper68 · 03/11/2021 12:09

LaetitiaASD namechange changes for a reason. Some people on come on mn because they need to bully.

CloudPop · 03/11/2021 14:50

I'm completely stunned that anyone can suggest this is anything other than totally unacceptable !! It's not "fun" and it doesn't make the OP "joyless" - it is rude and clearly very unwelcome !

HappyDays40 · 03/11/2021 15:34

Im not bothered TBH I am happily safe in my joylessness. There hav been several missed call from my sister today. I will update when I know more she has obviously stopped sulking!

OP posts:
FireworkParrot · 03/11/2021 16:13

There must be some room for compromise.

Yes, absolutely. They can compromise by the boyfriend fucking off with his karaoke machine to the firey pits of Hell where they both belong.

gettingolderbutcooler · 03/11/2021 17:08

How bloody rude!! It's like going to a friends house and bringing a sodding pool table. Not everyone likes pool. Or the noise! Or they just want to chat! Ffs!!

Threewheeler1 · 03/11/2021 17:43

I needed that, thank you GrinGrinGrin
HappyDays40 · 03/11/2021 18:34

Oh my days! They are trying to negotiate with me for a smaller machine still not enough room though. Im not sure what part not a cat in hells chance they are trying. Sister has just informed me also that he had hired it to look at the set up with a view to buying ao he can officially be Karaoke Man. This makes me think he hasn't hired it all and just needed somewhere to test run it.
If they buy it they have asked if ill drive a hire van to the ferry and back to their flat. I knew there was a reason she had stopped sulking ....they want something. They are happy to hire the van and pay for my ferry crossing thoughConfused The brass neck.
Told them no to that too. How much time do they think I have?

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/11/2021 18:38

Why can't they hire a van? Also, ferry? That's slightly out of the blue. Grin

HappyDays40 · 03/11/2021 18:42

They live overseas but not too far. Neither of them drive!

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/11/2021 18:50

Not being able to drive is to your advantage I think, since you unfortunately won't have the time to help them in any way. I can imagine them staggering onto the ferry piled high with equipment, like sherpas. Grin

WiddlinDiddlin · 03/11/2021 18:57

How on EARTH can he run a Karaoke business if he cannot drive his gear to venues?!

Just say No OP.. keep saying it, sing it if you need to.....
