Investing in Chanel

Is this a good idea given how ridiculously the prices are rising, sometimes two rises per year.
A classic flap massively over delivers in return on price.
The idea would be to use it on special occasions and clean and keep perfect in between - and then sell it when I am 65 or so.
I'd have to sell this idea to DH - we have other investments and pensions etc that dh pays into every year. He is very good with finances and is planning for future. I need to convince him to divert some money away from his normal investments or even relocate some.
Is this utter madness? I have smal pt jobs occasionally but it would take me 5 years to save for one of these on my own

I mean, if you want to and you can afford it, go for it. But as for investing in something to sell in say 20/30year (not sure how far off 65 you are!) is daft in my opinion, Chanel might not even be a thing then!

I'm about 20 years off. I used to love Mulberry bags and then the quality dropped off a cliff and the loyal buyers deserted it a bit. Now they are pretty stagnant and even going down in price. I've read a few Chanel.fans complaining their quality is getting bad. Bad idk they are so old and privately owned - I can't see them selling out any time soon...

Yea the price goes up every year! I wouldn’t do it as your nest egg, but if you bought one to use for special occasions and then decided to sell in say 5 years, you would likely make money doing that! Worth researching if they are currently cheaper in Paris as well…

Ireolu · 01/11/2021 18:39

There is a price increase soon.next few days. And it's a big one at least a few hundred on an already expensive bag. I have some I bough pre child and buying a house. I wouldn't now though. Prices are way to high. Chanel is trying to wrangle back all the profit not made due to the pandemic...

Ireolu · 01/11/2021 18:46

Also if you want to buy bags like this I don't think it's a good idea to view it as an investment. For several reasons it may not appreciate. You shd buy to enjoy (if possible) and not to expect a return.

SeemingSeamstress · 01/11/2021 18:50

You're batshit.

You're talking about "investing" 5 years worth of your discretionary pay in a luxury good you like. By all means convince your savvy DH to let you splurge but this isn't a wise "investment" where you know what you're doing and have a credible expertise or plan to build it e.g. if you're a luxury goods buyer in your professional part time role or have a history of the clientele that buys these goods, or have expertise in the high end fashion marketing or something.

It does not sound like that's the case.

LilyTheMink · 01/11/2021 18:58

Dh has convinced me it's not a good plan actually.
He would like to see something triple in value in 3 years to outperform our current investments.
Plus he mentioned capital gains tax- I'm sure private individuals don't tell the tax man when they sell a £6k bag but apparently you are supposed to. Which would make this less good than more tax efficient 'traditional investments.
Oh well!

This thread is incredibly confusing. There is no context- Chanel what? Perfume? Tunnel?? What an extremely elitist world you must live in ...

Blossomtoes · 01/11/2021 19:03

I don’t know about anyone else but I’d love some of your DH’s investment advice. He’s clearly very astute if he’s achieving those returns.

I bet he would. Confused

You sound more like his child than his wife, so for that reason alone YABU.

Tunnel. Hee hee. Made me smile.

SeemingSeamstress · 01/11/2021 19:42

3x increase in value for investments? Is your dh selling the Eiffel Tower? Hmm

Cocomarine · 01/11/2021 19:44

If I was able to regularly secure a triple value return in 3 years on my investments, I’d happily afford to give my husband some playing money.

Singinghollybob · 01/11/2021 19:48

@PuttingOutFires it says in the OP what she means, a classic flap.

MummyJ12 · 01/11/2021 20:02

Bags are only an investment if you’re going to part with it/them in a few years. Chances are you’d not want to part with your Chanel once you have it!
It would need to be a classic flap, in black and kept in excellent condition. (Lambskin doesn’t store well btw). Other colours don’t usually increase in value that much (except possibly a coveted red or a beige if you can find one with a depth of colour).
My advice is, go for it but get one but because you love it and will enjoy it rather than for the sake of it being an investment.
The only bags that are a dead cert for a good return are Birkins. They out perform gold for their increase in value, however, getting your hands on a brand new one is not nearly as easy as getting a Chanel. In that anyone with the money can buy a Chanel. Not so with a Birkin, they are only sold to select ‘loyal to the brand’ clients.

wallowmall · 01/11/2021 20:04

If you want one go for it. I have a few but all were under 2.5k (yes I know this is a lot). However I don't subscribe to the pay ££££ & only wear it once a yr to somewhere it can stay pristine, I don't see the point in that.

schmalex · 01/11/2021 20:04

I love Chanel, but there's no way I would buy it as an investment.

wallowmall · 01/11/2021 20:07

what investment is that?

clatterclatter · 01/11/2021 20:08

If they are in reach get one and enjoy it. I didn’t and now the prices have risen so much that it’s not an option anymore. Don’t view it as an investment though, you might not want to part with it.

Fraine · 01/11/2021 20:14

I’ve never heard of a classic flap but it sounds well rude, like a seasoned prostitute or something.

MummyJ12 · 01/11/2021 20:20

@Fraine If you know, then you know.
If you don’t, then don’t worry about it. It’s a Chanel thing.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/11/2021 20:48

Does the investment scheme have a very triangular struture?

I did wonder who the hell is so rich they would just post this on a general chat forum and assume most people have a clue what they mean. My first assumption was tunnel too.

Chargreen · 01/11/2021 20:51

This sounds mad. Chanel depreciate in value as a rule. Are you going to keep it in a hermetically sealed box?
