Investing in Chanel

Is this a good idea given how ridiculously the prices are rising, sometimes two rises per year.
A classic flap massively over delivers in return on price.
The idea would be to use it on special occasions and clean and keep perfect in between - and then sell it when I am 65 or so.
I'd have to sell this idea to DH - we have other investments and pensions etc that dh pays into every year. He is very good with finances and is planning for future. I need to convince him to divert some money away from his normal investments or even relocate some.
Is this utter madness? I have smal pt jobs occasionally but it would take me 5 years to save for one of these on my own
...

I meant 10 years and not 3

@LizzieMacQueen

A good second hand would grow in value too - I'd look into getting one of those instead.
Yes I'm just worried about getting a fake and not really knowing

@RockingAmadeus they certainly used too & very discreetly so no big red banner in the window. I used to work on Bond St, never any classics in the sale of course.

RockingAmadeus · 01/11/2021 23:51

@wallowmall I’ve seen clothes and shoes reduced in Chanel T5 Heathrow. Very interesting and good to know.

bestcattoyintheworld · 01/11/2021 23:54

Look at this Birkin. A bargain at £125,000 😆

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hermes-Birkin-35-Crocodile-Bag-Handbag-Porosus-New-/274766845739?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

Imagine leaving that on the bus.

BeenThruMoreThanALilBit · 01/11/2021 23:55

“Invest” is so hopeful. “Spend on” is the real world.

Dasher789 · 02/11/2021 00:01

I don't no whether it would be a great investment but I don't think its a ludicrous idea. If you bought a pre loved flap bag in good condition and enjoyed it yourself while keeping it in good condition. I cant see how you would lose money on it when you decided it was time to sell it.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 02/11/2021 05:33

@hawtpot

Chanel have sales !???
Caveat: I haven't bought anything since lockdown

But Chanel 100% have sales.
They sell all the pret a porter stuff and seasonal leather goods. Anything that falls into classic does not go on sale.

They don't advertise it in the windows (ocassionally in store there has been a tiny discreet cardboard plaque saying "sale" in font size 10 ) but generally its a tiny dot sticker on the cardboard product slips inside leather goods/clothing tag.
I have seen this in bond street, selfridges concession, in one of their NYC concessions and heathrow T5 boutique. Also pretty sure I've seen it in HK branch too.

😂 reading back I kinda of miss my old life - these days its all hefty mortgage payments, arranging insurance and halfheatedly arguing over whose turn it is to hoover because we cant find a decent cleaner.

MiddleParking · 02/11/2021 05:49

The idea would be to use it on special occasions and clean and keep perfect in between

This sentence seems like foreshadowing. Shudder.

Loving the people suggesting OP buy a Birkin Grin

MrsCardone · 02/11/2021 06:14

I don't think leather will even be a thing in 20/30 years time. There are so many non-leather alternative fabrics being invented and people are eating less and less meat, so there won't be as much available animal skin. Hermes are working on a non-animal leather for bags, so I'm sure Chanel won't be far behind.

Invest in diamonds. They never lose their value.

Bwahahahaha!!! Good one

MrsCardone · 02/11/2021 06:19

@LivingLaVidaBabyShower What?

londonrach · 02/11/2021 06:22

Are people still buying Chanel. Thought it was old fashioned and dated. I wouldn't op as you no idea if this be popular in 20 years.

Goatinthegarden · 02/11/2021 06:26

I’m intrigued by this. By all means, spend what you can afford on whatever bag you like, but a bag is meant to be a practical, useful object. You won’t enjoy it if you’re being precious about how and where you use it because one day you’re hoping to make a return on it. The future of fashion items and leather goods is not particularly certain. We’ve seen a big change in recent years in attitudes towards animal materials and luxury goods.

If I was into handbags (which I’m not) and bought myself a Chanel, I’d just take it everywhere until it fell apart. I’d even pop my poo bags in it and take it on the dog walk.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 02/11/2021 06:28

If you have a good relationship with your Chanel SA they’ll invite you to the sales before it’s publicly announced.

Don’t go for any of the new mini sizes. They don’t fall into the classic type and won’t keep their value. A classic flap or double flap medium or large (not jumbo) is the best.

I bought my large double flap in 2008 for £2500 it’s now worth £6000.

As another poster said Hermes is also a good investment, Kelly or Birkin but they start at around 8k. You need to have a good relationship with your Hermes SA or be really lucky that they have a bag when you ask.

What about a Lady Dior?

Diamonds are classically a terrible investment.
Ask any divorced woman who has tried to resell.

doesn't it depend on the diamond? there was that lady recently who almost binned a diamond valued at 2 million

Op not many on this thread seem to believe that while a car depreciates, a channel flap only ever appreciates. There are a lot of different youtubers who talk about bags and a lot of them wouldnt even look at the bags that dont hold their value.

You definitely did not have a stupid idea, but doing reasearch on mumsnet is the wrong place!

Hope it happens for you.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 02/11/2021 06:55

Its off topic, and yes i conceed you can make money on diamonds but its not a walk in the park and the majority of womens engagement rings are not "worth" half what they paid.

From 1999 to 2011, three-carat diamonds increased by 145 per cent, while five carat diamonds rose by 171 per cent, as measured by the Rapaport Diamond Trade Index.
www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/d6309d9a-8bf6-11e2-b001-00144feabdc0

A 3 carat is a specialist item costing around 50-80k (well when i went engagement ring shopping that was the price range we saw but did not buy! for that size.
Thats a huge outlay and that return is fairly meh even with a specialised buy. Then theres insurance and VAT.
Its no 3x in 10.

For the time effort and risk i would rather put my money elsewhere inc watches (but diamonds dont spark joy for me)

Shadedog · 02/11/2021 06:57

The Channel Flap never goes down in price.

Would you be able to sell it though?!

If you aren’t able to sell it for what you paid for it (or more) then it has gone down in price Confused

It’s all very tulip mania.

ManifestingWisdom · 02/11/2021 07:01

There are sellers. There are buyers. A flap will always have a market. As if she would be stuck with a channel flap!

The people running down yr idea dont know this market clearly.

MiddleParking · 02/11/2021 07:06
